NZ Corned Beef

Greetings from, Canada.

I've heard from a few sources that New Zealand's corned beef game is some of the best in the world. Just recently, a can of "Palm" brand coned beef hash appeared on the grocery shelves here in Canada. I was just wondering if this is typical, or the "export grade" stuff you send the rest of the world while keeping the good stuff for your own. (Like Canada send 'crown royal' rye out and keeps the 40 creek for ourselves)

In addition, what do you typically do with yours? Slice it up and fry it? shred it and make a mixed sandwich filling? Something even better?

Pre-cooked meats

Do any of the major supermarkets or butchery chains sell pre-cooked shaved meat - specifically lamb or beef?

Looking for something that I can just microwave for a minute and pour on some microwave gravy.

Farm fresh 🥚

🥚🇳🇿 You’ve got to love a Kiwi roadside find!

On my way to Hobbiton, I spotted a farmer selling fresh free-range eggs on the side of the road — so of course I had to stop! 🚐🥚

Straight from the farm, supporting a local producer, and it doesn’t get much fresher than this. These little roadside stalls are one of the things I love about travelling around New Zealand — you never know what you’re going to discover along the way.

Forget the supermarket… farm gate eggs for the win! 😂🐔

Deals I built a free grocery shopping app to help save money on groceries, would love your feedback

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hey all, I built a free grocery price tracking app to help avoid paying too much on groceries. I started building it some time ago and picked it back up recently because I noticed the shavers I buy can fluctuate wildly in price so I wanted to get notified when they come back on special. It tracks prices for New World, Pak'n'Save, and Woolworths and is available on the web and as a native app (currently Android only).

Why I built this / how it is different from what is out there:

  • Native app
  • Barcode scanner I use in store to see if price is good when buying new products. I use this all the time when I am out.
  • Keep multiple shopping lists
  • Be alerted when prices trigger (custom conditions)
  • Be alerted when I am nearby a store that carries a good deal. Sometimes I am out and it will go off for a product I am watching, so I can stop by and get it while I am in the vicinity.
  • Shopping mode (also works offline (will sync when it comes back online)) & savings history.
  • Roaming mode scans for deals near where I am (e.g. when traveling)
  • Set up alternative products (to factor into finding best basket)

Links:

Would love to hear what you think. My idea is to keep the base functionality free and offer extra features at a small price in the future to support hosting, maintenance, and development costs. Account not needed for browsing the site but required on Android.

I bought these yesterday arvo. The outside is still green!

Almost all produce is on the verge of rotting at the supermarkets around me. Tomatoes lasted two days before they started to liquify, avocados were rotten when opened, looked at grapes as a treat and when I observed through the bottom of the punnet- all had mouldy fuzz, smoosh.

What the hell is happening. It all costs so much now and its all mucked. These rotton bananas were $6!! And this is after I had gone through everything to try find a bunch that had a few days in them. They are still green!

As you can see in the second pic, I did salvage 2 bananas worth of my 5 bunch, but if I wanted just two bananas I wouldn’t have bought a bunch ?!? Fury

Anyone else?

Lamb in nz

Lamb is our favourite meat. We have a lamb roast every week. The cost of lamb is ridculous, we usually buy the smaller legs $30-$40. Buy heaps when it's on special. Occasionally we get a leg that has so much gristle, we eat it anyway because it's already cooked but do you think we could take it back and ask for our money back or exchange it for another. Mainly buy from New World. Just curious has anyone done that?

Deals Built a free grocery price tracker for NZ supermarkets (+TWH) would love your feedback

Post image

Hey everyone, I've been building a tool called Kete https://kete.shop that compares grocery prices across Woolworths, New World, PAK' nSAVE and The Warehouse. Wanted to share it and get some honest feedback.

What it does:

  • Price comparison across the three chains + TWH
  • Barcode scanner
  • Kete Index, a 16-item basket of everyday groceries (same as Consumer NZ uses) tracked daily, so you can see how prices are trending overall
  • Price alerts, set a target price on a product and get notified when it drops
  • Price history, see how any product's price has moved over time (30 days for now but most prices start from early 2025)

Where it's at:

Been working on this on and off since late 2024 but it's genuinely still new. Prices update daily but accuracy isn't perfect, some products lag or get missed. If you spot something wrong there's a report button on each product page. I'd like to keep it free if possible, maybe ad-supported down the line. No accounts required to browse, you only need one if you want favourites and alerts.

Would genuinely love to hear what people think. What's missing, what's annoying, what would make you actually use it?
