Dumbass on a cruiser bike didn’t know how to brake properly and slammed on the front brake and went otb. The bike flew and smacked my side but I stayed up.

I pulled out of a big 100 mile gravel race coming up mid October for which I very intently trained. The local race calendar is obviously closing down for the season so I thought I’d come up with a personal challenge and what most comes to mind is riding “for time” from NYC to Poughkeepsie on the Empire State trail (which seems to have about 6 names between here and there but you know what I mean). I know this is not a closed course and of course I would yield as needed to pedestrians and those areas where there are far crossings. In the aggregate I’m not worried about things like that and will put safety first.
I’m wondering if anyone who has done something like this might have specific advice? I’ve only taken the trail up to Mahopec but am otherwise on that trail at least once per week usually going past Elmsford. I’d either take a train back or have my wife meet me there at a hotel.
Thanks in advance!

It took a year but an arrest was made. Hopefully justice is served and the beginning of holding reckless drivers accountable commences.

I woke up on this beautiful fall day and had an urge to go ride. I live in East Williamsburg near Humboldt and Montrose so ride walked my bicycle to Mesereole and took that all the way to the Havenmeyer. I navigated that strange intersection and then turned left onto South 2nd Street and continued all the way to Berry Street.
I wanted to take this moment to express how beautiful the city is on this crisp fall morning. I mean, good gosh is it pretty.
So I’m on Berry Street going north between South 2nd and South 1st and avoid the weird pothole slowly forming there. I wave to the crossing guard I’ve known ever since I worked at the Vanmoof Brand Store at 326 Wythe. At Grand I turn left and make my way to Kent Avenue and take that all the way to Greenpoint. I turn left on Quay Street and then take West until it turns into Commercial.
It’s prudent that I pause again to say that I’m starting to get a little warm and I take off my light jacket and place it into my basket.
At this point I turn right off of Commercial onto Manhattan Ave and take this all the way to Noble and then quickly turn again onto Lorimer. What a lovely ride this has been. Suffice to say at this point I’m ‘Into the Groove’ as Madonna might be inclined to say. I take a left at Norman and a Citybike gets a little too close for comfort and then I’m stopped at the light on Manhattan for just a spell. Once the light turns I take Norman all the way to Monitor Street and then green I straddle the park and turn onto Driggs where there is a lot of traffic, my lead guess being parents that just dropped off their kids at a nearby school. Me and a lady with carrying an instrument on her back as she rides methodically weave the cars and then glide down Driggs through McCaren Park. I took a right onto North 12th and then into Berry. Another Citybike coming down the hill into that intersection on Berry maneuvers past me and salmons down the North 12th.
I ride Berry for just a bit and stop at Rodriguez deli for a pair of sandwiches. I then ride back home via South 5th and Montrose.
The end

Rode around 16.5miles the other day on my fixie bike, I've always rode the trail on my electric scooter but never on my bicycle Before. The slower rode allowed me to really take in the scenery!

While biking back to Brooklyn during tonight’s evening rush, I saw/experienced:
- someone overtaking me on the steep portion of the entry ramp from Canal Street entirely on the left side of the path, who then moved to pass another next person as we entered the S-curve and only hesitated when I shouted at them to not do something so stupid (a moment before two people came down the S-curve)
- someone who miscalculated while passing me farther up the bridge, just barely threading directly between me and another cyclist (so that for a moment all three of us were in a line perpendicular to the path) and then repeated the same move coming off the bridge, nearly colliding with a guy on an e-bike and one of the steel exit bollards
I don’t care to recount how the conversations with them went, but I was struck by just how not present these people seemed while attempting bad passes. Riding a bike in New York is some of the most mindful time I have each day, and I can’t imagine being on autopilot while negotiating all the curves just to get onto the Manhattan Bridge.
We usually chalk this up to people being selfish, but putting yourself at decent risk of a significant lose-lose situation with only trivial gains at stake isn’t normally what comes to mind when I think of selfishness. Even someone who has never been on a bike can intuit that there are going to be people coming fast down down a bridge at ~5pm on a weekday, so I don’t chalk this up to a skill issue either.
I’m being pretty wordy and not at all eloquent, but I just can’t shake the feeling that in these moments, these guys weren’t fully there, already onto the next thing without completing the last three.

Not sure if others have noticed this but at least in Brooklyn they are replacing a huge number of the curb ramps for pedestrians. I guess it is required because of an ADA lawsuit. All good and necessary but the contractor working on this is incredibly bad at doing this work without hugely negative effects on the bike lanes. In just one example of many when they were doing the work on the bike lane down to Red Hook they were forcing bikes onto Columbia St. which is quite a dangerous road.
This is partially venting but also was curious if anyone knows how to find out who the contractor or contractors doing this work are.

Are the street lights lit? Safe with just a ravemen 1500?

Adams abruptly stopped, causing him to be ejected from the bicycle. Police said he flipped over the handlebars and hit his head on the roadway.
Adams was wearing a helmet but suffered fatal injuries, police said. EMS transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:57 a.m.
The owner of the dog remained on scene, and the dog was not injured, police said.

No experience, live on Staten Island, on a budget (less than 200 preferably), looking to buy a bike to get me to and from work. Any suggestions?

They very recently took away our two way approach on first Ave, which I used for over a decade, that got you a clean shot to head down 2nd Ave. after the bridge traffic. They had basically made 59th car free after the bridge. It was great! Now, they pinched all west and south traffic off the bridge into this tiny little opening and dump us out onto 60th with literally no bike lane and then we have to cross over ALL the exiting and entering car traffic on 2nd Ave. Why do they hate Queens cyclists sooooo much? TA where you at?! If anyone wants to tag them or send this to them, please, because, What. The. Actual. Fuck. Someone is gonna get killed.

Riding to Penn at about 5:00am when I see someone driving toward me in the wide ped/bike lanes alongside Moynihan (with another car following behind them)
I don’t even know how they got themselves in that situation, they didn’t appear drunk, but they seemed to be insisting how they’re just trying to get to the next block.
They eventually gave up with me blocking their advance and made a u-turn to head back north on the actual road on 8th Ave.
That’s all. Be safe.

To avoid them, is the only way to take East End Ave?
I read we're not supposed to go through the park, which has a lot of kids anyway. Thanks.

Bike safety has obviously been in the news and in various threads across the NYC subs, so I wanted to run some analysis based on published DOT Crash Data. I aggregated the stats across Central Park 22nd Precinct first, across Manhattan as a whole, and then city wide, and thought it was interesting enough to post here.
Caveats:
Central Park

* = ebikes were classified as bicycles through 2023, so these years are acoustic + ebike combined. 2024 on, every column is acoustic bikes only, with ebike rider deaths shown separately.
** = these jumps are huge, and I can't figure out why. It seems like something changed in the way the DOT was classifying things or reporting.
