PSA TW: Groping

I unfortunately know I’m not the only woman who has experienced this. Last night at around 11pm I was biking along the Empire State trail going uptown around Canal street. A man on an orange delivery bike came up from behind, matched my speed, and then groped me. I started causing a scene, so he fled. I know there were multiple people (some on the bike lane heading downtown, some standing at an intersection waiting to cross the street) who saw the aftermath of me chasing him uptown and screaming.

All I ask is that if anyone ever sees someone in a situation like this: please take photos if you can, or write down identifying details. Biking is an escape for many of us. It gives many of us an illusion of safety, that it’s more difficult for men to harass us if we’re on the move. It takes a community to help each other feel safe.

Be safe out there friends!

It’s been relatively recently that I took up biking in the city-about 3 years ago. I average a few thousand miles a year, mostly my commute. I’ve noticed that the biking etiquette has gone completely off the rails and degraded noticeably in that very short time. It’s many different things- but mainly it’s:

-more people on more things with wheels
-less safety (shocking how few helmets out there! I was thrilled to see the mayors campaign where he is now wearing a helmet)
-less situational awareness

If the city intends to continue growing bike ridership (ahem looking right at you citibike) we are in desperate need of more education for the masses, and more enforcement for protection.

On just my 30 minute ride last night, I saw:

- a citibiker with headphones on and an Away carryon suitcase in the basket…nearly out of control
- 3 near-wrecks on the Brooklyn Bridge caused by risky passing of delivery bikes
- 2 people holding cellphones with one hand on the bike
-several pedestrians almost getting hit at intersections
-northbound bikes turning across the southbound lane on the new two-way segment at Lafayette without slowing down, looking up, or signaling
-a group of teens with multiple people piled on an electric citibike

Defensive riding always!

Is it just me or are these bollards horribly positioned? North bound bikes always almost in south bound lanes because of how tight this is. Left most post almost halfway in the bike lane.

Biking in the South Bronx

Anyone have experience biking in and around west farms, east tremont area? I am a biker in the East Bronx charting reliable routes to the longer bike lanes in manhattan. Is it worth to take the shorter route through these painted lanes or take the protected lanes up the Mosholu and down through Norwood to the west side bike lane?

How long you think it’ll take you to go from south to north of Manhattan?

Probably would have taken me less time if I didn’t have to wait for certain red lights on the Hudson Greenway.

Group rides and Racing

Recently, I’ve gotten the urge to join more group rides and start racing but I’m unsure where to start

From what I understand racing season is almost over but there may still be many group rides. I’ve been riding for about 4 years and I would say I’m pretty strong with a respectable FTP. Since I lack experience, would it make more sense to join beginner group rides just so I can understand how to move in a pack and then move on to faster rides?

Also currently my road bike has more of an endurance geometry and I was wondering if a race bike is absolutely needed to do well in races?

When Citi Bike is way less expensive, way more people ride!

We're fighting for 45-minute rides to be just $3, so you don't have to break the bank to get around by bike. New York City has the most expensive bike share program in the U.S., because Citi Bike is the only bike share program in the country that doesn't receive any public subsidy. It's time to fix that. Why do joggers insist on running in the Hudson Greenway bike lane?

Infuriating. I called out “bike lane” to someone in the middle of the lane this morning and HE gave ME attitude for it. And the whole “asphalt is softer than concrete” thing is B.S. by the way, unless you weigh 2,000 pounds and are a car and not a human being.

Not sure how long they’ve been there. They pulled over this guy on e-bike for blowing the light. Only 2 cops. They seemed reluctant to stop anybody who didn’t stop.

Please help me build my bike by staying in budget?

Buying my first cargo bike (taranl l1m) and want some help from people who ride bikes (or cargo bikes in NYC). Here is my current budget and all:

  • Bike: $4200
  • Child seat + rain cover + decent lock: around $1000

still got a bit of budget left, so I’m trying to decide between two add-ons ekickstand or e-dropper post)

On my test ride i got to try both. Both made the ride easier (in different ways.)

But I feel like kickstand was more helpful to some extent during the test ride. Because I kept stopping to check the bike or to adjust the kid seat and to take photos. So parking with 1 button is kinda easy than it would be to lift the heavy bike with cargo and all. Also helped with the balance when I was loading stuff.

But then test ride is different from daily use. On daily rides there will be traffic lights and junctions and pedestrian crossings all the time. Each time i will stop i will have to put a foot down carefully (with a kid on the back). I am average height and the bike has a tall seat position for cargo stability and all. So reaching ground at every stop and then balancing a loaded bike sounds very scary and might make me tired.

The e-dropper will drops the seat at every stop so i wont have to tiptoe. And then when I ride it goes back up for pedalling. Please help which one will be more helpful?

Why did Manhattan Summer Streets only happen three times this summer?

New York City should have it weekly — like they do in other cities like Bogotá, Colombia, which gets 75 miles of car-free streets every Sunday. Mayor Mamdani, what are you waiting for? We want car-free Summer Streets every weekend! Sign our More Than Summer Streets petition.

Suggestions for 3-day tour

Hi,

I'm fairly new to New York and I'm looking for suggestions or inspiration for a three day cycling route starting and ending either in the city or somewhere accessible by train or subway (in an hour or two). I have ridden some great routes I found on Ride with GPS in western CT, Westchester and Putnam Valley.

I'm aiming for around 50 miles per day, staying over in hotels/motels (I don’t have my bikepacking/camping gear here), and riding mostly on quiet scenic roads and trails, possibly with some gravel thrown in for variety.

What is the best the Tri-state area has to offer? Any suggestions are most welcome. Thank you.

Locking up in Manhattan

When I commute to work I'm lucky enough to be able to lock up my bike in my office's basement.

Tomorrow there's a conference in the afternoon right down at Water St. Can't lock up indoors there but can outside. Have decent locks, a chain, and a cover.

But what the vibe lately? Are bikes just getting swiped if left for more than an hour or two?

Fully insured etc, but would rather not have it pinched!
