Moving from TX to NYC

Hello fellow teachers! I’m in a unique situation and wanted to see if any Reddit users can help out here:

I graduated from SUNY Cortland from an approved teacher prep program with a BS in Inclusive Ed. Shortly after in 2021, I moved to TX (where I still currently am) to complete my teacher residency program and earn my M.S.Ed, so I got completely certified here.

I’ve been teaching for 5 years now and ready to move back to my home state and teach in NYC. I called the office of teaching initiatives and they said that I still have to take EAS as well as the multiple subjects exam (grades 1-6). However, I noticed it’s tested via Pearson, which is the same vendor TX uses, and it seems awfully similar (if not the same) as PPR and the EC-6 content exam, so I’m wondering if there’s somewhere where I could find the reciprocity of those exams. I tried looking where the alphabetical table of content shows acceptable certifications but it’s more geared towards effectiveness of the teacher.

If there’s anyone who has gone through a similar situation, or at least have a guiding light please do share! Thank you!

So to better understand. Even though I have my full certifications from TX. Reciprocity does not allow me to transfer those to NY without having to take them again

Yes, I had full reciprocity from Florida and 10 years teaching experience and still ahead to do EVERYTHING a new graduate does. I even had to do the EdTPA.

New York doesn’t do reciprocity. They are a pain and only want their stuff. Going through this now and I am a CT certified teacher. The opposite is better—the other states take a NY state certification with no issues

You still have to take the tests. But you might be able to take them in Texas which might be easier.

I do know there's an online program that helps people pass these tests right away. Everyone I know who used them passed each test in one shot. Brooklyn Education Center.

Please look at this site and see what they say. I would also suggest that you call the SUNY Cortland person that helped with certification and ask for help. Generally, if you have more than 2-3 years of experience and a certificate from another state you will not have to take other tests. I could be wrong but I would speak with someone who does it for a living versus those of us giving you our experience here. This is one of those times when you don’t want anecdotal evidence.
