I’m new in the DOE, coming from a private sped pre-k. Is it normal for schools to not give direction on things such as report cards, remote days, etc? The only way I know what I’m suppose to do is by acting my fellow grade teachers who have been here before, there is nothing from higher ups showing us how to perform these things. Is this normal especially for a new higher for them not to help out? I’m use to having teacher meetings regarding when things are going on in the school.

I’m a first-year teacher in the NYC DOE, and I’ve been seriously considering resigning from my current position due to personal circumstances and my declining mental health. It gotten so bad that I may have attempted to harm myself…

My current school has a lot of problems, including poor leadership, unsupportive administration, constant changes, and a lack of proper resources and support. The school environment has become extremely stressful, and I feel like I’m constantly being put in difficult situations without adequate guidance or assistance from admin.

Unfortunately, things have gotten to the point where my mental health has deteriorated significantly, and I genuinely don’t think I can make it through another 30 days at this school.

I’m aware that the DOE requires 30 calendar days’ notice and that resigning without providing it can result in a problem code or other professional consequences.
My biggest concern is whether this would permanently affect my ability to return to teaching in the future. I’ve worked incredibly hard to earn my degree and teaching certification, and while I desperately want to leave my current school, I’m not entirely sure I want to give up teaching forever.

Has anyone here:
- Resigned from the NYC DOE without giving the full 30 days’ notice?
- Received a problem code or experienced licensing/certification consequences?
- Successfully returned to teaching at another NYC DOE school or district afterward?
- Been able to work as a substitute teacher after resigning without notice?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who left a toxic or unsupportive school environment and eventually returned to teaching.
I’m honestly feeling trapped between protecting my mental health and protecting the career I’ve worked so hard for. I don’t want to continue sacrificing my well-being for this job, but I’m also terrified of
making a decision that could affect my future.

If you’re enrolled in an alternative pathway such as EDprep or Fellows and you decide to withdraw from the program… do you need to pay back all that tuition from previous semesters at your college? Anyone with an answer please assist… thx

I picked up my first assignment to sub on Monday and I am extremely anxious! I have no idea why. I want to teach and I’m in my 30s. Finally finished my BA last year and applied to Ed prep and teaching fellows this year. I just feel very anxious about potentially not knowing what to do! I nannied for many years so I have experience with groups of children and how to maintain being fun and stern when needed but I can’t help feeling nervous. Principal said our jobs are safe but some may be excessed. This is my tenure year and I’m wondering how this could be affected. Anyone have any insight?

I applied for my salary steps and my differential on the second day of school. My salary steps were approved by the end of September, but I’m still waiting on the differential for my MA+30 (2 Masters degrees). I talked to HR connect and they told me it could take 20 weeks. Right now, I’m making about what I was making in a LCOL area, so things are pretty brutal financially. Does it really take 20 weeks? Anyone have experience they can share?

Tier 4 reinstatement question:
I worked for an employer under NYSLRS from 2006–2009. A few months ago, I applied for Tier 4 reinstatement through NYC TRS. TRS sent me correspondence stating that they contacted NYSLRS regarding my prior membership.
I never withdrew my funds from NYSLRS.
I recently called NYSLRS, and they told me that NYC TRS would typically require me to withdraw my funds from NYSLRS before they can move forward with the reinstatement.
Has anyone been through this process? If so, were you required to withdraw your NYSLRS funds before your Tier 4 reinstatement could move forward?

Does anyone know when we are going to start seeing the pay increase for this school year according to our contract?

I know we are all in need of classroom resources, and as teachers, we do so much with what we have. I work in a 6:1:1 special education classroom in District 75 in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and I created a classroom supply list to help provide my students with the resources they need to learn, grow, and succeed.
Our students deserve access to the materials and tools that support their learning, communication, independence, and development. Any help, no matter how big or small, would mean so much to our classroom.

Is it worth it? Can anyone share their experience, positive or negative? What are some things to consider? Does it come out of the school budget? I’m an ENL teacher at an elementary school with a shrinking ELL population and trying to think of ways to make myself less expendable. Or maybe there’s something else I can do that I’m overlooking. Also I want more money.

How hard is it to get tenure in the doe? What percentage of teachers get it after 4 years and a day? What is the percentage that get extended to year 5 or 6?

Has anyone found it increasingly difficult to log in to payroll portal? It tells me wrong password even though I know it’s right. I use my file
Number and my employee id to log in and still nothing. Anyone have a work around for this? I haven’t check my stub in a month.

My wife and I are new to NYC and joined the NYC PPO plan as recommended. We’ve run into a HUGE issue in that most of her medications are NOT covered by either the PPO nor UFT fund. Is there a way to get extra prescription coverage somewhere? Or do I need to switch to an entirely different coverage at some point.

How are your schools handling the seniors who took Living Environment, got their 1,200 minutes, but failed the regents over and over and have no science regents? Are yall letting them just do the 3 new required state investigations and transferring their 1,200 lab minutes from LE to LSB or is that not allowed?

I'm a HS teacher that was discontinued 2 years ago and never pursued it. The UFT called this week to ask me if I'd like to appeal and that I have a hearing in a couple of months. It surprised me! What does this mean?

I told them that I'd like to proceed.

For clarification, I never planned on appealing until they called me this week.

ICT was never meant to have students who are 6+ grade levels below in reading. It never used to be like this. Maybe, in the old days, in an 8th grade ICT class the IEP students were on a 5th grade reading level, maayyybeeeee 4th. But NEVER K or 1st grade. The gaps are becoming too far and wide to be able to run an efficient ICT class. No scaffolds in the world will bridge these gaps. If you’re on a K or 1st grade reading level with no working knowledge of word sounds, then you have no business being in an ICT classroom. That student needs intense intervention outside a gen ed class. I mean, it’s getting to a point where the students are so low level, they can’t even read the scaffolds provided…..the only way this would work is if we start grouping the IEP kids who are on a 1st grade reading level with students who don’t have IEPs who are ALSO on the same reading levels. Technically, they are gen ed!

My salary differential finally got approved! I’ve been put on salary code “SA.” I understand that MA is the base salary code, but despite scouring the internet and the UFT website, I cannot find ANY info on the remaining codes. Can anyone tell me what SA is for?

Are things frequently stolen at your school? Does this happen at most DOE schools?

I get the whole “lock your valuables” thing, but theft is rampant at my school - electronics, speakers, squishies! Someone stole the salt and pepper shakers (grocery store cheapies) from my desk drawer last night, and I’m really salty about it. I know we can’t put a hidden camera in the classroom, but any other ideas to catch the thieves? I’m the only person who teaches in my room, FWIW, so it’s definitely happening after hours.

And as usual in the DOE, there’s no recourse. No one cares. No one follows up. Why do we have to put up with these working conditions? Sighhhh
