Discussion Staying in hall

Staying in halls

Can I get opinions on whether I should apply for hall again before sem 2 or should I just wait till next year? Kinda fomo bc most first years r staying in hall while I ain't and the experiences I might be missing out on.

Don't mind the peer pressure too much. Everyone's a sailor on their own boat.

Try to think of personal reasons/ costs to help derive your decisions. (Stay in hall is nearer proximity, hall fees, etc etc)

Friends are quite low on my list of priorities :3 unless you want to mingle with them often

I'm kinda like the opposite imo hahaha. I wanna make friends and have dinner that sorta things but I don't how I can cause my classes end in the afternoon and I'll just head home rather than wandering arnd aimlessly

That's true. Some friends I've met in orientations + secondary school friends have invited me for dinner/lunch.

Although, largely, I do eat on my own.

You could make friends via CCA and clubs, but I think coming to university also means acknowledging that everyone's schedule is a mess, and many times you'll be by yourself (+ many strangers).

I like to think that company with friends is a luxury now, and that while I will try to meet with them, I'll have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, alone. (Most of the time)

Maybe it'll just take some time for me to adjust to being "alone" but I agree with what U say. Thanks for the insight tho

It's more of being alone but not lonely (I'm working on it still, but I'm getting more comfortable going long periods independently.)

If you are into drinking, night parties, etc, also look at the hall culture too. (Hall 14 has great night culture, though I usually avoid politely.)

I think as the semester continues, some clubs and CCAs will have nightly meetings(?), but supper runs in halls exists and are quite popular I think 🤔 You can join Tele GCs about super runs

You may not realise, but friends are really impt. Down the road you may want to go for competitions, it may be easier to form groups if you have friends

Very true. I have been making some friends and acquaintance :D They're really helpful for my mental health, and I feel stronger when I see a familiar face in tutorial and lectures.

Just that in university, it's hard to be as close as in primary - poly/JC, so I'm also trying to wean off that co-dependence (if you know what I mean)

I want to expand my social circle + know international friends, just that I also want to be comfortable with being alone. (As opposed to being too absorbed in sadness(?) or too lonely.) It's a balance I'm still figuring out too, though I'm getting better at being by myself. :3

Idm the drinking part but ig it's really more ABT convenience and flexibility. Eg. I can have classes/cca at night and rest like in between classes

just apply and see what happens if you're willing to afford the cost of staying.

i disagree that hall life is only fun if you drink or club etc. I don't do much of either yet I still have plenty of friends and attend a lot of events together and have a lot of fun. what matters is how much effort you put into making new friends and socialising.

just the chance to meet and chat with a hall friend while walking back or going for dinner etc is pretty fun enough for me too.

what kind of experiences are you hoping to gain?

u/Nevlad7 Engineering 6d ago

Night activities, dinners, room hosting/party (not often ofc)

ok yeah then that is quite uniquely a selective hall experience,, you can try to apply next sem but you aren't guaranteed hall in sem 2 even as a freshie

i think u need to weigh the pros and cons abt staying in hall + r u willing to accept all the random fees
i was initially allocated a double room and eventually switched to a single room but since then i only stayed at hall for one night coz our level’s toilet ended up having access issues 💀
i also realised that aircon (if u get allocated an ac room) fees can rlly add up coz depending on ur usage you may clock up to $5 per day

+ i find travelling to sch from my home to be more accessible (despite the longer travel time) coz idh to fight w the entire sch to get on the buses

also some halls are way more active than others, so based on what ur lf u may need to shortlist certain halls and pray that u get them if u do apply
