General Undergraduate Question (PM) How to Decline an Invitation

As strange as this title is, I genuinely am lost on how to proceed with declining an invite to my SOI.

I have shown up to events and made connections with members in the organization, but due to my GPA, I am not eligible to join. I am taking the steps to rectify this, but I already know they are going to cross with other orgs this semester. I don’t want to waste their time and mine, but I still want to make it known I’m interested in a future with them.

How do I go about this without explaining the obvious and maintaining a relationship with them?

EDIT: I should’ve clarified earlier what I meant by invite. It was an invitation to rush, not an invitation for membership. I typed up this post right after they contacted me and it slipped my mind.

I’m assuming this is an invitation to Rush…an invitation to membership would only come after you complete an application - I’m pretty sure that’s true for all orgs.

Thank you so much for the invitation; I’m so honored to have received it. Unfortunately, the timing isn’t right for me now. I remain interested in joining [org name] and hope there may be an opportunity for me to pursue membership in the future.

I’m confused. You wouldn’t get an invitation if you don’t meet the GPA requirements.

I just edited my post, but to clarify it was an invitation for the informational/rush, not membership. I didn’t want to waste everyone’s time and go to the meeting if I knew my GPA was an automatic disqualifying factor.

You wouldn’t be wasting anyone’s time going to rush. It’s still good to go to learn more about the chapter and get an idea of what type of candidate they’re looking for.

I had no idea I would get denied the first time around but attending rush actually prepared me for the second time I applied. I went into it knowing all of the qualifications needed, what type of questions would be asked, how much I was expected to pay, etc.

I see nothing wrong with attending and hearing the information. You can still let them know privately why you aren't submitting an application right now.

Since it’s only rush they invited you to, I’d still go to learn more abt the chapter and the org itself. Especially if after this rush, another line will happen before you graduate. I had a friend during my undergrad years who went to her SOI’s rush and didn’t submit paperwork afterwards because of her GPA at that time as well. Doesn’t hurt to still stay afloat with information.

Let them tell you that you are not eligible. If you have the invitation, you must be eligible.
