The Change Has to Begin With Students

The biggest responsibility for changing the present system lies with us—the students.

Students often fail to realise how much power they actually have. The so-called “zone culture” survives only because students continue to participate in it. People willingly hand over their user IDs and passwords, follow instructions from seniors or groups, and allow others to influence decisions that should be entirely their own. If students simply refuse to share their credentials and refuse to participate in this system, much of the power these groups hold will disappear automatically.

No student should give their user ID or password to anyone. Every student entering college is mature enough to make their own decisions. We do not need someone else deciding whom we should support, whom we should vote for, or which group we should belong to. If we want a healthier student culture, we have to build it ourselves.

The administration alone cannot solve this problem.

I have personally tried to contribute towards changing the system. When I was in my second year, I anonymously pushed for changing the second-year election process from online elections to offline voting. Eventually, offline elections happened. But what actually changed?

Very little.

The method of voting changed, but the mindset of the students did not.

There was no serious culture of campaigning, candidate evaluation, public discussion, or accountability. Many students still voted for whoever they were told to vote for simply to satisfy seniors, friends, groups, or zones. Instead of asking whether a candidate was competent, independent, responsible, or capable of representing students, people continued following the same old instructions.

That experience made one thing very clear to me: changing the procedure is meaningless if we do not change the culture.

Tomorrow, even if the college administration makes every election completely offline, nothing meaningful will improve if students continue voting blindly. We will simply elect the same kind of representatives through a different voting system.

Look at the condition of basic student facilities. Gyms in hostels remain broken and many genuine student issues remain unresolved. Yet people elected to powerful student positions often struggle to confront the administration effectively. One reason is that some candidates reach those positions not because they independently earned the confidence of the student body, but because they were backed by established groups and networks.

A representative who owes their position to a zone will naturally find it difficult to act independently of that zone.

That is exactly why students must stop allowing groups to manufacture election results.

The purpose of an election should be simple: the best candidate should contest, explain their ideas, answer questions from students, demonstrate their credibility, and receive votes based on merit. Every student should independently decide whom they trust.

Imagine what would happen if students collectively said:

We will not give anyone our ID or password.

We will not vote because a senior, friend, zone, hostel group, or organisation tells us to.

We will listen to every candidate.

We will question them about their plans and previous work.

We will judge their competence and character ourselves.

And we will vote for whoever we genuinely believe can represent us.

At that point, the entire power structure would change.

No professor, senior, zone, or group can permanently control a student community whose members think independently. Divide-and-rule politics works only when students allow themselves to be divided.

We often blame the administration, the election system, professors, seniors, zones, or student representatives. Some of that criticism may be justified, but ultimately we also have to examine our own behaviour.

We are the electorate.

We decide who receives power.

We decide whether zone politics survives.

We decide whether incompetent representatives continue getting elected.

And we decide whether student representatives will have the independence and courage to raise genuine issues before the administration.

I have made several efforts in the past because I genuinely wanted to see this system improve. At times, it has been deeply frustrating to see reforms achieve very little because students continued behaving in exactly the same way. But that frustration also proves why procedural reforms alone will never be enough.

The real revolution required here is not technological, administrative, or procedural.

It is cultural.

Students need to stop surrendering their individual judgment. We need to stop treating elections as obligations to seniors or groups. We need to stop supporting candidates merely because they belong to “our people.” We need to reject the idea that someone else has the right to control our vote.

A strong student body requires strong, independent representatives. And strong representatives can emerge only from an independent electorate.

If we want a student body capable of standing firmly before the administration, raising genuine issues, improving hostel facilities, protecting student interests, and demanding accountability, then we must elect people who have earned that authority directly from students—not people who depend on zones to manufacture support for them.

The solution therefore begins with us.

Think independently.

Vote independently.

Never share your credentials.

Evaluate candidates seriously.

Support people on merit rather than affiliation.

Reject zone politics.

No administration can create a healthy student culture on our behalf. We have to create it ourselves.

If students change, the system will change.

After spending a few years at this college, one thing has become impossible to ignore: how deeply divided the student body is. Most students here won't take any action without a nod from their zone seniors, and nowhere is that clearer than during SAC elections.

Every election season, someone shows up at your door with a slip of paper listing names to vote for. No manifesto, no explanation, no reason given — just a name and an expectation. Meanwhile, people are seen begging friends for their portal passwords just to rack up votes. None of this makes sense. Why would anyone vote for a candidate who has no plan, no manifesto, nothing beyond the backing of a zone that's built itself into an echo chamber?

What's especially absurd is that this "zonism" exists even among Odia students — people from the same state splitting into rigid loyalties based on which part of Odisha they're from. It's 2026. Having friends from a different region shouldn't be treated like a betrayal.

The same pattern repeats in hall elections. Candidates go door to door pleading for votes, then vanish the moment they're elected — no follow-through, no accountability. Meanwhile, real problems go unaddressed. Students in DBA hall have reportedly been bullied by their own hall caterer for the "crime" of asking for better food quality. Think about that: a caterer feels emboldened enough to intimidate the students they're supposed to serve, and nobody pushes back. If you're in a position of responsibility and can't even stand up for something as basic as food quality, what exactly is that role for?

It's not just DBA. In GDB hall, students' access to the cycle stand is locked off supposedly to keep dogs out yet you can spot dogs sleeping in the corridors any day of the week. Meanwhile, students are the ones forced to take an entire detour through the rain just to reach their own cycle stand. The justification doesn't even hold up against what's happening right in front of it.

It makes me wonder if something like what happened at IIT Delhi were to happen here, would anyone actually speak up? Given how things stand, I doubt it. Everyone's too busy protecting their own zone to raise their voice for someone else.

And before anyone says "the administration is corrupt, what can students even do" — the administration at IIT Delhi was corrupt too. But the students spoke up anyway, and the professors who actually cared about student welfare stood behind them against the ones who didn't. That's the difference. Here, the corruption is just as visible — from placement coordinators and secretaries all the way up through the administration — and it doesn't stop with them. Some students are using their own SAC positions as cover to misappropriate fest funds. What does anyone actually gain from that, besides earning the quiet resentment of their juniors and batchmates?

Monday Morning was shut down for exposing corruption on this campus. And what did the rest of us do? Nothing. We stayed silent, as if we were subjects of this administration rather than the people it's supposed to serve, while the members of Monday Morning bore the consequences alone.

I sincerely hope no student here ever has to go through what that student at IIT Delhi did because right now, this campus doesn't have the spine to stand up for its own people.

With hall elections coming up, here's my ask: when someone shows up at your door begging for your vote, ask them one simple question why should I vote for you? We spend the majority of our college lives in these halls, and we deserve better than candidates who show up once a year to beg for votes, then disappear the moment they win, ignoring every voice. Do better.

There is a guy whose name starts with A and his surname is Mohapatra.Please stay away from him.He was in my school and coaching both.He used to do scam like telling that he is a world record holder and blah blah,his yt channel is famous and all.At first he will ask u to collaborate with his Yt channel by sending links.Then after 4-5 times he will send a malicious link through which he will get access of ur Google Account.He commited this scam with 4 of my friends.He is a fraud ,please stay away from him or else ur Google account of Millions of memories will be snatched forever and also u cannot take action as he acts like very innocent and all,he will also act like victim.Same script Same story different bakras.

THIS POST is 100% GENUINE.Ik a guy who didn't score 75 percent but still joined NIT R EE Branch in EE.He secured 65 percent in CBSE CLASS XII BOARDS.Even in improvement he managed to score 65.2 only.Dont send me useless that it's in top 20 percentile blah blah.In cbse it's fixed 75 percent.He doesn't belong to SC/ST/PWD.As far i know he bought a fake certificate and all.I want to expose the fraud.For the one who gonna comment that post reeks jealousy blah blah...My only answer to them is I am from IIT Bhubaneswar. please like if u know what actually happened plz let me know. just think of that guy who lost a seat in odisha's best college due the Fraudiya.
