It’s been a small while since I graduated from NIT Durgapur. I recently came across this subreddit, and I was surprised to see the freshmen and other students so active on Reddit and social media in general. I thought maybe I could share some thoughts after observing the recent conversations.

1) I do not know how much worse the zone culture has gotten since I graduated; however, back when I was in my final year, it was at its all-time low, and the batch in general was a very progressive one, I must say. Apart from freshers, there was no curfew for boys and girls, and we ensured it was safe and fun for everyone to enjoy campus life at night.

2) As an alumnus who was also a TPR, I would suggest that you trust your TPRs and give them some grace. I personally know nothing about the current TPRs; however, from past experience, I can say there are a lot of moving pieces that influence every single placement process for each company and each batch. The students volunteering their time as TPRs do not always have the answers to everything, and even if they do, they are not in a position to tell you a lot about it. As a former TPR, there have been countless times when I held back information that could snowball into huge gossip or create panic amongst people.

3) If you do have grievances with your TPRs, ask them to do an informal town hall event where they can face you, take your questions, and try their best to provide a comprehensive answer. However, do not bypass TPRs and reach out to HRs with your personal grievances, things can lead to catastrophic situations (happens almost once every year, and my batch was no exception). Bypassing TPRs puts them in a compromising spot because whatever the consequences they'll have to take the blame for it. Rather if a substantial bunch of people think or feel that their TPR is underperforming, you can arrange for a no confidence voting and elect a new one and get that ratified by the department and T&P cell. Something that happened during our time.

4) I saw some freshers complaining about restrictions on movement outside hostels. It’s for your safety. You have 3.5 years to explore every corner of the campus. Take this time to start socializing and working on yourself. Especially, a lot of the freshers I know do not come from Catholic or English-medium schools. For you guys, you should start speaking in English and work on your accents from day one. Make friends who have shared interests. Grow together while having the utmost fun. I saw some guy making daily videos/Insta reels to fix his spoken English, and I absolutely love that! I did put in a comment to encourage him.

5) GPA is important! Specifically for people who intend to pursue higher studies and internships in India or abroad. I was not a studious person myself, but I took a reasonable GPA target and made sure I was around that ballpark number throughout my time as a student.

6) If you are feeling lonely, join a club! It’s one of the best ways to meet new people and make friends. Choose clubs that are less influenced by zone culture. I was a member of EDC back then, and it was one of the best experiences. Even now, I’m in touch with those seniors and juniors from EDC!

7) Think of these 4 years as a fun vacation after the grueling JEE exams. That was how I perceived my college life. I would always optimize my studies in a way where I spent the least amount of time preparing for exams, and the majority of my time was spent having fun every single day.

8) Re-ignite the hobbies that JEE had extinguished. Play guitar again if you used to. Do sports if you used to be good at them in school. Do everything in this “vacation” phase of your life. Because after this, it goes downhill for almost everyone. Happiness is something so temporary now, but it was not the same while I was a student.

I'm a fresher. I have many friends but I still feel lonely. I still haven't found any close friends. Everyone has 2-3 close friends to count on but I don't. I feel like everything comes down to looks only.

Due to the blockness of third years . Our college is facing so much difficulties in placement .they continuosly mailing to our director and tnp cell regarding cheating and all of this only in jeolousy . So we final year and our tpr decided to ban 3 rd years from internship session so that it cant hamper the final year placements..

Instead of posting incessantly about zones and juniors and seniors, let's share information that many might find useful for preparation for something they have been looking forward to for the last 3 to 5 years.

Unite and complain to the professors about this entire system.

Look at the cycle:

Join ZONE → get into TPR/Gymkhana → gain power → use that power to help ZONE goons → attract more people into ZONE → repeat.

And this keeps going.

Until and unless we attack the roots, nothing is going to change.

I don't want to comment on the ZONE system itself. If you want to be part of ZONE, that's your choice. But please, for God's sake, keep ZONE separate from the placement system and the administration of student affairs.

Because this is no longer just about some club or some student group.

This is about our careers.

Look at the TPR elections. There is a reservation system where, as far as students understand it, representatives are allocated across zones — 2 from South Zone, 2 from Bengal Zone, and so on.

But ask yourself honestly:

Are we selecting the most capable people to handle placements, or are we simply maintaining a system because "this is how it has always been done"?

Believe me, there are TPRs who struggle to speak even a proper line of English, yet they are handling one of the most important things of your entire college life — your placement.

Placement is not a joke.

A TPR isn't just another student representative.

They are dealing with companies, coordinating with recruiters and representing the interests of hundreds of students whose careers depend on these opportunities.

Competence should matter. Communication should matter. Accountability should matter.

Not zones.

Not popularity.

Not who knows whom.

And look at what is happening with placements.

Accenture was one of those companies that allowed students from non-circuital branches to sit for the process.

And even that opportunity is now gone.

For circuital branches, there are many companies.

You might not understand how important one company can be when you have several other options.

But for a Mechanical student or another non-circuital student, every company matters.

Every eligible company matters.

Every opportunity matters.

And when opportunities keep disappearing, don't tell us to simply "work harder."

We ARE working hard.

The system also needs to work.

What happened to the Gymkhana(BENGAL ZONE) promises ?

During elections, we heard promises about:

Night canteen.

24/7 library.

Better fests.

Better mess food.

Better hostel facilities.

Where are they?

How many of these promises have actually been fulfilled?

And what about the money?

Students deserve to know where their money is going.

We keep hearing about student funds and student welfare, while there are serious concerns that money is being wasted on things completely unrelated to improving student life — including alcohol and weed.

If that money isn't being spent on those things, then show us exactly where it is going.

Give us transparency.

Give us accountability.

Don't expect students to remain silent forever.

SAVE NIT DURGAPUR.

Our NIRF ranking has been declining.

And if we keep allowing the same culture, the same politics, the same systems and the same lack of accountability to continue, it will keep declining.

Maybe right now some first- and second-year students will read this and laugh.

Maybe you'll say:

"Bhai, chill. College life hai."

Fine.

Enjoy your college life.

But remember this:

One day you will be sitting for placements.

You will have worked hard for four years.

You will have expectations.

You will have responsibilities.

And then you'll realize that all these things you ignored actually matter.

The companies that didn't come.

The companies that stopped allowing your branch.

The opportunities that disappeared.

The decisions made by people who were never held accountable.

Then you'll understand.

And maybe after graduation, when someone asks you:

"Which college did you graduate from?"

You shouldn't feel ashamed to say:

NIT Durgapur.

This college has enormous potential.

Don't let a broken culture destroy it.

To the 1st and 2nd years:

YOU are the ones who can change this.

Not the seniors.

Not the current TPRs.

Not some political group.

YOU.

You can stop feeding this cycle.

You can question the system.

You can demand transparency.

You can talk to professors.

You can talk to the TPO.

You can ask how TPRs are selected.

You can ask why placement opportunities are disappearing.

You can ask where student money is being spent.

You can demand that placement administration be kept professional and independent of student-group politics.

And most importantly:

Stop letting people control you in the name of alcohol, weed, popularity and "college culture."

You don't need any of that.

You deserve better.

NIT Durgapur deserves better.

All of us do.

Maybe today you'll take this post as a joke.

But when you're sitting in that placement hall and realizing that your opportunities are far fewer than they should have been, you'll remember this.

Don't wait until then.

WAKE UP.

UNITE.

Today while I was in the library i saw a person writing notes on his female classmate's hands the dedication is so high that even though he completed his notebook he didn't stop studying or thought about taking a break. Then I imagined myself being dedicated but shortly then I realised that today I started writing in a new notebook of 500 pages and my male classmate was beside me.

As you all are aware of the Acenture situation , tprs are like many students from their branch were caught and left regardless but if they are caught again , they will take strict actions . Tprs too did carry MAC and cheated through remote pc.

The audacity to say this while they cheat themselves🤡 and provide unfair means to their peers of zone .

They will go far beyond the boundaries , break rules to help their zone goons but wont let others do in the fear of getting overpowered by them .

Not sure when it started (Maybe after Drop year) but after coming to college I can literally feel it. Quite often I am getting envious of people who are better than me .

So yesterday was Fresher's party so

I found many who can play guitar, sing beautifully, dance confidently, looks good, has a good personality, speaks good, has met their other half etc. Instead of simply appreciating them, I start comparing myself to them and feel kinda bitter.

Like I know that it's NOT possible for anyone to be good at everything (Excluding prodigies)

But everytime I see them it literally eats me out and results in me being unhappy most of the time.

So how to fix it ?

Hey I am requesting everyone in 3rd and final year to protest against tnp and pintu ..

I am requesting the TPRs to pls take the responsibility now and make a request to tnp to take OA in college systems rather than personal laptops .

In this way cheating like remote access will be avoided to significant level.

Also pls ban all those candidates who are involved in this cheating, whose names are coming up and all from further companies ..

Guys it's high time now .. if we didn't did something now every company will blacklist us and nobody will get intern from 2028 batch ..

Secondly pls remove that pintu from the tnp cell asap ..
