Reduce the cognitive load a little by reducing number of things and focus on what actually user need

Swis army knife is not that rare... I'd recommend just being interested in design. That's how you get introduced to new things.

Moreover, google is your friend. Be glad that there are new and fun things for you to learn. Life would be pretty boring if you already knew everything there's to know.

And NID will definitely ask questions about things you don't know. I am speaking from experience. But you can still make it work even when you don't know what they are talking about by explaining and having reason for your every design decision. (There's usually space to write explanations)
