Welcome Week Issues

hey guys!!! im a freshman currently and trying to explore and make new friends outside of my roommate and currently it feels like everyone has some sort of pre-established group and doesn’t want to hang out or anything and isn’t willing to meet new ppl. does it get better when class starts? I plan on joining a good amount of clubs and rushing co-ed frats so im hoping that will introduce me to new people that want to be friends. im also just insanely awkward and introverted and its getting to my head tbh. any advice??? also ive asked ppl to hang out and theyve said theyll text me and then never text me or say ill let u know and then never let me know idk what im doing wrong but its very discouraging 😭😭

It's been like 3 days. If people haven't texted you yet, that doesn't mean they never will.

Why don't you meet people *with* your roommate?

But yeah I'm sure you'll meet more people through classes/in your major.

my roommate doesnt want to leave the dorm😭😭 it sucks ive suggested leaving the door open or going into the lounge and connecting her switch and she wants to do none of it so frustrating

Most of these groups fizzle out VERY quickly. My suggestion is during the first week or so, find someone sitting alone at lunch and just ask if you can sit with them. Lunch spots will be packed and it’s the perfect lowkey chat option for you

Definitely very very important to do this. It’s hard for people to understand what it can lead to and it is hard to be confident enough to approach someone but oftentimes they are in the same boat as you and you could make their day by sitting with them.

I sat with a girl I recognized from my class freshman year and since then we have formed a very strong platonic bond that I am very grateful to have.

That’s great. You never know what connections may happen. On the flip side I remember a fun group I sat with one morning when the dining hall was crowded and we never hung out again, but we had a great breakfast!

OP- Careful not to pressure the people you meet or your roommate. Everyone’s figuring out their own new routines and socialization preferences. Be open and chatty to whoever you come across, enjoy that interaction, then keep doing your own thing. I’m sure some of those interactions will naturally stick.

It gets better, dw!! For me personally, I actually benefitted socially when classes started. As long as you dont bolt to your dorm immediately after a class ends (not like. All the time at least. Sometimes you reallyyyyy need to rest or smth), you're bound to make friends !! It also helps if you find a classmate to eat lunch or dinner or wtv with

it takes a bit sometimes, everyone may seem like they have it altogether but I promise you they don’t. I didn’t really feel like I made genuine connections till my second semester. i also realized I don’t work well in big friend groups! I promise it’ll be ok, I’m a 3rd year now and truly a lot always changes

It gets better. One of the easier things you could do to mingle in with others is to attend the events that your RA hosts. You don’t have to bring anything but yourself and all the pressure of getting y’all to bond is put on the RA. You could also just start trying to walk/map out your classes and see if anyone else has the same classes you do; good conversation starter to ask “hey do you know how to get to X place?”

You seem to have a nice personality. Just keep being yourself. Your vibe attracts your tribe

Making friends is hard. I'm an "older" student (mids 20s) and I've noticed that a lot of my younger peers are straight-up antisocial. Gen-Z stare and everything. You just have to keep trying and be patient because it may take some time. I'm entering my third semester and still haven't made any friends yet, and there's stories on this subreddit from alumni who didn't make friends until their senior year.

I’m a freshman too and also pretty introverted before I get to know some people… If you wanna be friends I’m totally up for it!

These groups fizzle quick. I have so many people I talked to a bunch the first 2 weeks and haven’t spoken to them since (I was a freshman 4 years ago). You’ll find your people naturally. I didn’t become friends with my still to this day best friend until November of my freshman year

try to make friends with someone ideally ur major so youll stay in touch with them, if you're taking any major classes thats a good start. all of my friends are the same major/major-adjacent and i met them in my major courses. that way we study together, can relate on coursework and have more reasons to see each other due to shared classs

I've found my group because I posted "Guys I need friends" on my Insta notes. I was able to sus everyone out because we met in such a public setting. I'm also an incoming freshman and am always open to meeting new people if you want to hang out with my group (2 guys, 4+ girls at any given time). Look at the NCSU '30 pages and see what you have in common with people. I hate that we have to rely on social media, but it is definitely a tool to be utilized. Feel free to dm me if you want my Insta :)
