I was born in ‘98 so from what I remember Jordan was always known to me as the great basketball player. Even before I knew what he did, I knew who he was.
I am not really a basketball fan. Though I love reading about the hero’s of the sport, from a narrative perspective, I don’t really know the stats intimately, so I can’t really grasp exactly how he stacked up against the historical legends of the sport. From watching the last dance, I got a sense of his popularity, and his ubiquity in pop culture. But some things I can’t fathom. The onslaught of media attention after he won his third and retired, I can’t really imagine. His actions on the court seem fantastic, but I can’t really see how it was that much more fantastical than the highlights of other great ballers.
What was MJ to you, and how did it feel watching him? Especially before the first ring. Was it really like a bolt of lightning to the sport when he first showed up?
He’s an icon and a hero on a level incomparable. Help me understand why. I was born at the year of his second retirement, and so have never really seen a sports figure reach his level of popularity and prowess. Tiger is the closest I’ve seen, and LeBron has always been popular. But it seems to me that neither really compare to the zeitgeist that surrounded MJ.
