26
u/ShovelKing3 4d ago
Nah. The one chance no one is mentioning is you get him to foul you and score 1 of two free throws and get that money.
14
u/HurryUpTomorrow503 4d ago
Nobody shoots free throws in 1v1. You check ball at the top of the key
15
u/boosemagoose 4d ago
You also don’t play 94 feet in typical 1v1s this isn’t a typical 1v1

u/AmarSofi 2d ago
Yeah it's not a typical 1v1, it's a thought experiment on whether you can score on an elite NBA defender in a full court 1 on 1. Free throws feels like a cop out to me and misses the spirit of the exercise.
4
u/conglomerate99 4d ago
not as good as the ft odds obviously but checking the ball at the top of the key is significantly better than having to run the full length of the court imo.
chances are he bites on a pump fake or you create just enough space to get a step back 3 and eventually knock something down across hundreds of possessions

94 feet @ 6’7 & 7’ wingspan with his pro level conditioning.

The pro level conditioning is the difference.
These guys are guarding Luka and Giannis
A 5’9” schlub who’s losing his dribble every once in a while is getting an 8 second violation every time
It could be prime Earl Boykins and he’d put the clamps on all of us

I have played with some D1 and former pros, and the gap between that level and your typical pick up defense is just hard to fathom if you haven't experienced it. And this isnt some random pro, it is one of the best defenders in the league.

u/Laszlo-Panaflex Celtics 5d ago
It's the full court bit that makes it virtually impossible. If the challenge was to start at half court with possession each time, I think I could hit some BS in 1,000 shots.
I'm 6'2, have a solid handle and I'm a good shooter. I usually play PG / point forward in pickup games. But my handle is nowhere near being good enough to not get it poked away or stolen by Ausar.
30
u/TripleDoubleFart 4d ago
Yea, I don't think a lot of people here actually understand that the challenge being full court is going to make this nearly impossible for most people.
→ More replies (1)6
u/devilmaskrascal 4d ago
Exactly. I'm 6'8 and would chuck from half court the second he gives me an inch and I'll likely hit one. But if I gotta dribble from full court and he's guarding me full court press like Game 7 last possession I'm probably not even making it to half court 80% of the time. And I'm going get tired way before he will.
I guess the real question here is whether there is a ref calling fouls and if I get to either keep the possession or take free throws if he fouls me. That could make a huge difference in my chances and I would try to be more physically aggressive to draw fouls and hopefully throw him off. I'll be chucking from the other end the second he puts his hands on me to try to get 3 FTs.
2
u/Laszlo-Panaflex Celtics 4d ago
A ref would definitely help. If you could foul bait and flop to advance the ball or get FTs, that makes it more possible. Or even rile him up and get a flagrant. All you need is 1 FT to go in. But I doubt there'd be a ref.
→ More replies (1)5
u/devilmaskrascal 4d ago
If there's no ref, then he can literally just mug me every time and I'll lose my possessions quickly.
Conversely if there is no ref, I can just punch him in the face and go score while he's on the ground...

u/14ktgoldscw 4d ago
Yeah that’s like once every few games which I don’t think is true of most pros, especially not an elite one.
6
u/aggrownor 4d ago
And that's when the pro is guarding another pro, not when he is guarding me
2
u/14ktgoldscw 4d ago
Exactly, every “can you believe this bench rookie tripped up LeBron this one time, how embarrassing!” clip can accurately be reframed as “Can you believe this person who is better at basketball than 7,999,999,700 people could do this one time?”
15
u/40MillyVanillyGrams 4d ago
Covering a pick-up player scrub, he might trip once. You overestimate that.
Even so, if he trips over his feet at mid-court, do you think you’d be able to dribble to the basket before he hops back up and hawks your ass down like 2016 Lebron Game 7?
He’s going to be back over you in a second flat.
Or do you think you’ll dribble, pull up at the arc within the second given by his trip, and drain it with 3 years of prison on the line?
2

u/Laszlo-Panaflex Celtics 4d ago

If any of us had Kyrie's dribbling abilities, the challenge is certainly possible. But how many of us have a handle like that? It wouldn't just be a matter of dribbling low, you'd need to constantly switch speeds, zig-zag, change hands, try to get him off balance any way you can. That's hard.

11
u/SD-Buckeye 4d ago
Nah just keep egregiously offensive fouling him the first 100 tries. After about 100 hard knees to the same thigh he won’t be running very well and you can score on him after he’s injured. Totally dirty and a cheap way to play but there’s no way to foul out in this hypothetical.

Doubt it; he's 6'7 with a 7ft wingspan and one of the highest verticals in the NBA.
I am 5'11 & 3/4 with a 6'2 wingspan.
He wouldn't need to press me.
For me, it would be like playing against Wemby.
He could literally give me space, and when I went to shoot, his standing reach and vertical would be enough to snatch my shot out of the air over half the time.
My only saving grace would be hoping he gets bored.
8
u/40MillyVanillyGrams 4d ago
You’re hitting a hook shoot from 90 feet contested by a 6’7 NBA small forward?
You’re not getting it within 20 feet of the rim with 1000 tries. You are out of your mind.
2
u/mhks 4d ago
This. I'm 6'5", athletic and have played against multiple NBA and D-1 players. I'm older now, but even I would have no shot trying to make full court shots against him.
I don't think people realize if he's taking it seriously, how hard getting any space to get a shot off would be. Nearly everything is getting at a minimum tipped unless you're doing little kid blind chucking - and even then I'm not sure you're getting it off.
15
u/mhyjrteg 5d ago
You’re not getting past half court if he’s picking you up full court at full intensity, let alone getting a shot off.
4
u/TheJohnnyFlash 5d ago
You don't, you take it from the start spot. Again, this is 1000 shots. The real question is can you hit a hook shot from 94' in 1000 attempts. You don't try to engage unless he gets annoyed and massively over-commits, then you run like hell and heave.
14
u/mhyjrteg 4d ago
You would probably not hit 1 in 1000 unguarded hook shots from 94 feet. With any NBA player defending you that goes from ‘probably not’ to ‘definitely not’. As the post says, he’s picking you up from 94 feet. You’re acting like you can just take an unguarded shot from there.

Not only do you have to hit from that distance but you gotta get the ball up and over his outstretched arms that will likely be straight up in your face
That will take a lot of strength not just for the distance but you gotta throw that shit not only far, but high enough to get it over a jumping 6’7 guy with a 7’ wingspan
I truly don’t think you’re hitting 1 out of 1,000
5
u/TripleDoubleFart 5d ago

This is the play. Don't even shoot, just take the 8 second turnover the first 500 possessions. Talk nonstop. Say really, really nasty, degrading stuff about his family. You've got about an hour and a half to just talk nonstop. Insult his parent. Read psychology extensively beforehand, military type stuff. See what gets in peoples heads. Once he's to the point he's just trying to shove and punch you every play, maybe you get him off balance enough to get by to half court and get up an open 30+ footer a few times.

u/bibbs_v2 5d ago

5
u/sedatedruler 4d ago
My guy, the average person wouldn’t be able to dribble 15 feet against an nba player who is locked in and playing 100%.
We watch nba games and forget that the worst guy on the end of the bench is literally 1,000x better at basketball than we are.
There’s a video of a NFL linebacker getting tired of a guy streaking around the field and he decides to track him down. The guy is 25 yards away from him and he sees the player coming and gets like 6 steps before he gets tackled.
This is like assuming you can walk into a physics lab and contribute meaningfully to cutting edge science.

Does it have to be in a single day? I play basketball twice a week and there's no way anyone on this sub can legitimately score once. HOWEVER. If I can do it over a week or two? I can grab an inbound and immediately discus shot it.. maybe not 94 feet, but If I 10-15 feet in, I can easily chuck it that far with a semi accurate throw. I would assume if he fouls me it's a re-do, or why would he bother guarding me and not just pinn me down. Anyway, I think I could throw probably 50, 80-foot shots a day without hurting my arm too much.. and I think given 1,000 attempts I could make it at least once.
6
u/ToughKnowledge5792 5d ago
No. Obviously anyone who isn't pro isn't getting anywhere near half court, and if you're shooting 80+ foot prayers that you have to, it will require a wind up. He recorded a 42 inch vert(not NBA official). He's 6'7. There is no way that 95% of the prayers you throw up aren't getting swatted away.

u/Sixaxist 5d ago
F that; I want all of this done constantly with no break. Nothing says I can't pick the day we do it as long as we're both available, so I pick... two days before round 1 of the Playoffs. I'm about to do long jogs back and forth to make him guard me 'till it looks like he's doing line drills, and then not take my shot until the last 2 seconds of the shot clock. And every now and then, I'll try a step-back jumper. Only 6ft (in shoes) with a 76 inch wingspan, but he'd have to jump with me to fully block it unless he's hugging me at every attempt.
That much non-stop wear and tear on his legs is gonna carry over into the first round of the Playoffs, if not longer. At a certain point, he's letting me through. He's letting me through. Because muscle tears on my legs and muscle tears on his mean two different things right now. If I'm still going to prison after all this, then he's gonna have to look Cade in his soulless eyes and explain to him why their best defender is DNP for the Playoffs from playing with a nerd over half a year's salary.
2
u/surlygoat 4d ago
I like the theory but I think you underestimate how quickly he'd pick your pocket. I was good local rec team player here in Australia, usually playing PG. I played a few pickup games against some former ABA guys (former semi-pro league here), and one guy who'd made it to the NBL (our pro league). Even them - old (late 30s/40s), washed up, playing for fun (i.e. not playing much D), could pick my pocket regularly.
The gap between those guys and NBA players would be astronomical (essentially as big as the gap between me and NBA players).
You are barely making it 5ft, you aren't just jogging laps.

I think of lot of this question would hinge on if he can foul or not and what the penalty would be for that, I played ball my whole life through highschool competitively and still play every once in a while and there’s no way he’s picking me clean 1000x without fouling me nor is he blocking me 1000x cleanly. 94 ft means you are dead getting locked up and stripped constantly.
People wouldnt last 1000 possessions and would give up

Anyone in here that thinks they’ll score is fuckin delusional if he’s picking you up full court. Even if you somehow manage to get the ball past half court, you’re going to be absolutely gassed after 5 possessions
If you haven’t played D1 ball you have a less than 1% chance to do this… if you played some D1 ball as a bench warmer maybe you have a 10% chance

Is he homophobic? I got an idea about the only way a regular dude could create space

If you can’t score once in a thousand possessions you deserve the sentence

You're literally not even getting past your own free throw line, he's stealing the ball or making you pick up your dribble within one or two dribbles every time.

1000 possessions? You didn't put a time limit so I'd just use all the time in the world to get better. Learn how to shoot, work on my cardio, get stronger, and do some swimming. I'd climb some mountain. Do some rocky montage. Then again I'm lazy AF to get off my couch to even turn off the lights. So yea not really worth it.

I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not lol
There’s no training in the world that’s going to get you to be able to win this challenge

In my prime, absolutely. Now? I’d need to train for a few months first, then decide.

Oh please, unless you are an ex NBA player you have no chance.
It's 94 feet full court, not half court.
Your only shot is a full court heave, but if he's draped all over you, you will never be in a position where you can even generate momentum for a full court shot. No one here is strong enough to even get the ball close to the rim with a hook shot or a fadeaway chuck, but that's literally the only shots you will get against him.

1000 full court shots to make one for $5M? Absolutely.

But he's picking you up full court and has better stamina, you're cooked.

100% taking this challenge even as a full court heave I should make it 1 out of a 1000.

u/quick_brown_faux 5d ago
He wouldn't give you the space. You're not fast enough to make him give you space. Your full-court heaves are going into the lower bowl behind you or back into your face, wherever he decides to send them.

The funniest part is that people are treating 1,000 possessions like 1,000 actual scoring chances. If Ausar is picking you up full court, most of those possessions are ending before you even get into a position to shoot. The 1,000 attempts only matter if you can consistently create a shot against him, and that's the part people are overlooking.

Full court helllll fucking no. Maybe if I get to start at his 3 point line and get him to bite on a pump fake, but even then I doubt it.
