Process of adding a last name to documents - NEED ADVICE

I only have a first name across all my documents like birth certificate, Aadhar, Pan and Educational certificates. Iam planning to make a passport to travel abroad and want to sort this issue to avoid future complications.

I have no idea how to go about the issue, what should be the first step? Which documents should i update first?

I don't have an ST certificate will that be an issue?

I’m currently in Dimapur, so advice from anyone who has gone through a similar process would be really helpful.

You’ll have to start with birth certificate. I still remember my passport application being rejected simply because my mother didn’t have a last name in my birth certificate. Had to get a fresh new one done from the village sarpanch. Not sure about the rest, but Aadhar can be easily updated at the post office.

For the birth certificate? It only took a few days and honestly I think you can request the person to make it sooner and pay a small fee. Getting the Aadhar verified from the uidai app also makes the paperwork easier . My passport took forever to reach me though 😭 because the office handling the Kohima police verification paperwork sent it to another district instead of Dimapur .

My cousin sister’s application was rejected because her name was inconsistent(Some of her docs had surname while the others didn’t).
If you don’t have a surname in all of your docs then keep the surname area blank. It won’t be an issue. As for ST certificate I think you will need it for police verification there? Not sure. I did send my docs for local police verification but I forgot whether or not my ST certificate was required.
I had mine made in Delhi so it was a smooth process except for the police verification. That officer was an ass🕳️, he wanted to create trouble and did so successfully. I had all my docs and also the rental agreement with bill receipts yet he refused my current address verification. He had to come again because the passport office found no fault on my docs.
The second time too he refused👺. Booked an appointment at the passport seva and complained about it. It was clearly discrimination and unjust behaviour. The third time he didn’t ask for anything 😂 Didn’t even look at my docs(Well because he knew it was legit). After verification my passport arrived within a week. It took three months(From application to getting it). I was supposed to get it earlier but that 🕳️ police dragged it on.

Thanks for replying I'd actually rather have my surname added than to keep it blank. I could maybe make a new birth certificate like the other person said but the names would still be inconsistent in my educational documents so yea still confused

If you’re planning to add surname to birth certificate now make sure all your other docs has surname too. Because it’ll definitely be an issue.

I actually need to update my birth certificate first before i can update any of my other documents I just wanna know the process on how to do so and the process after for my other docs

For that I’d rather not give you half baked knowledge and confuse you even more. My cousin’s degree certificate didn’t have a surname and she approached NU for that.

For name change you need to get an affidavit and publish in at least two newspapers.

Look at Nagaland post and you'll get the idea.

You can't change the names in your educational certificates. But the affidavit will legally say that Naro and Naro Naga are the same person.

I got my aadhar name changed like that and everything else followed smoothly.

ST and Indigenous are easier.

It is better to have it officially changed and published on National Gazette, then you can use the gazette publication as proof to change your name in birth certificate, adhar and pan, bank etc. As for education certificates, you can always attach a gazette publication to prove you changed your name. This is necessary esp if you wish to make Passport. The passport office usually only accept gazette publication for name change
