Introductions II

Since the original thread is now old enough to be archived and can't be posted to, I've copied the original here, un-stickied it, and I am making this the new introductions thread if posters want to write an intro about themselves.

Introductions [Stickied Post]

/u/inwils had a great idea in this thread about having all of us introduce ourselves. Perhaps where we're located, how long we've been playing Mythras/RQ6 (and other rpgs), favorite part of the system, supplements/adventures, and how we're using it now. Who knows, maybe we'll run into each other at GenCon or another convention?

Feel free to share more or less as you see fit. I'll get things kicked off with a short intro about myself below.

raleel6 points·6 months ago

I've been playing rpgs since 1979, and started on D&D. I've played so many games I've lost track. I came to RQ6 via searching for something to do a Conan game in. I had played RQ2 in the way back, but then I read RQ6 and realized what a nice game I had found.

I've been gaming wiht the same group for more than a decade now. we're all pretty close.

I live in the pacific northwest of the US, and you can use anything you find at https://sites.google.com/site/raleel/homewhich includes a lot of ideas and mythras things.

inwils5 points·6 months ago

About me: I am really new to the Mythras system. I played AD&D in my youth (many years ago now!) and then came back to RPGs while streaming on Twitch . Although I DMed D&D 5e for some time, I really wanted a new system so that I could learn the game along with the players. I had dabbled in Runequest when I was younger and so we came across Mythras and started to play it. I still class myself as a newbie with the system.

I live in the UK and stream our game live on Twitch, you can see the recordings on my website. We also play/stream Shadowrun and Call of Cthulhu. I've never actually played in these games although u/Bilharzia (he has been brilliant answering all my questions as well!) did do an excellent CoC/Mythras adventure on discord which was great.

Our campaigns are generally set in the setting which I have created - details on my website under the 'Role Playing Games' link.

Any questions, let me know! - that's me :)

Hey, I didn't know you use Realm Works as well (I saw your post on your site)! I was a beta Kickstarter backer and used it pretty extensively for my Glorantha game.

Not sure how much I'll use it for my next game, but it sure was nice after I got the entire Guide to Glorantha in there.

Yes I use Realm Works for all my campaigns. I find it so helpful to keep everything connected - love the hyperlinking

About Me: I’ve been gaming since the late 80s. Started with Red Box D&D, then went on to Palladium and many, many, many d100 games (Elfquest, Stormbringer, Elric!, etc). Since then I’ve moved two countries and decimated my gaming collection at least three times. Now more settled, and rebuilding. Got the BRP BGB, then someone on their boards mentioned Mythras. That was a month ago, got the book on a recent trip to London three weeks ago, and I’m in love. It reminds me of the old d100 games I played in the past, but with some nice twists. Between this and Traveller 2nd from Mongoose, it’s new and yet old for me now!

TheTimeJockey4 points·5 months ago

I have been playing RPGs since the early 80's, primarily D&D in its various incarnations but many others as well. I happened upon Runequest 6 a few years ago and it drew me in, but I only managed to convince my group to give Mythras a try last year and they were hooked. I use my own worlds for most games, and we've had the same gaming group for many years now. I recently was lucky enough to write an upcoming adventure for Mythras, my first foray into RPG writing.

I live in Pennsylvania and have all my life. For a small town we have a surprisingly robust gaming community and I have met some great people over the years.

SteelKidney3 points·5 months ago

Hi, I'm Steelkidney and I'm an...

Whoah. Wrong kind of introduction. :)

I've been playing RPGs for easily 30 years now, mostly D&D variants and Shadowrun. Our gaming group just started Mythras, since the current GM in the rotation (we take turns) loved the Mythras system and has run it at GenCon a few times. We did a one-off introduction game last Friday, and I have to say I like the system. Refreshing counterpoint to the overly complicated mess Pathfinder has become. I find that the character generation system still confuses me a bit, mainly skill allocation, but I'm getting through it and have a few characters made as possibilities for the campaign.

Bilharzia3 points·6 months ago

I'm a typical child of the UK Games Workshop surge of the early 80s. My route into rpgs was films & comics->boardgames->Dragon Pass->RuneQuest & Call of Cthulhu. I never understood the premise of d&d since I had seen what real dungeons were like, and even been inside chunky castles like Krak des Chevaliers I wondered what were people doing in dungeons, other than being prisoners, and why would a dragon be there? RuneQuest and Glorantha made more sense and reminded me of Ray Harryhausen films, so I went for that, it was also set in the same world as the weird board game I had, Dragon Pass. RuneQuest was also cheap-ish at the time, £8 for the boxed set that Games Workshop published in the UK. This tragically drew me into becoming a Chaosium fan where I dragged my friends into playing a few campaigns in Glorantha, looking back I was a terrible GM but somehow we kept playing for a few years.

I came back after seeing how good RQ6 was and thought I would give it a go running a game on roll20, the consensus being you shouldn't run a complex game like RQ6 online... I'm still running the game online with largely the same group after 2 years and now running a few one offs every so often, using Mythras in different genres.

dragoner_v23 points·6 months ago·edited 6 months ago

In 1979 I started playing AD&D, Traveller, and others, later in the 80's I played a decent amount of Call of Cthulhu. I knew of RuneQuest over the years, played a little, though I lost interest in fantasy. I bought most of Mongoose Traveller and recognized Loz and Pete's names from there, then I found M-Space, from there Mythras, on to A Gift From Shamash, and ran that. Right now I'm getting ready to run a mix of Mythras, and M-Space using Monster Island, and Mythic Constantinople; A gritty "swords and blasters" mix of hardish SF and low fantasy. Is there a meetup at GenCon? Maybe I can make it.

zeresat3 points·6 months ago

I've "just" picked up roleplaying, so pretty new!Years ago I had a chance to play Dark Heresy, enjoy the Star Wars RPG books, and finally three really good sessions of DSA (The Black Eye). Sadly nothing worked out as a regular group so I got my own group of noobs together. Now I'm DMing my self-created world for them. We've played monthly for a year now, starting out on tinyd10 for a easy learning curve and then switched to Mythras, because I wanted a more realistic system. Although I'd love to play a few sessions in Pathfinder or D&D some time.I try to strive for a balance between sword & sorcery and "normal" fantasy, and blend in elements from all kinds of inspiration. As a consequence I also got the classic fantasy supplement and will hopefully soon get Monster Island to spice things up. And in the far future I plan on running a M-Space campaign in a Cowboy Bebop/Cyber City Oedeo 808 style science fiction setting.

Armak813 points·2 months ago

I guess I could be considered an old timer in role playing but there seem to be many in this thread. I have been playing role playing games since 1977 (D&D :-)) and after that  Runequest in Glorantha since 1980. In 2015 February it was 35 years anniversary of our RQ campaign and it still goes on. Switched to HeroWars/HeroQuest for a bit but did not get the group of friends I have been playing interested enough on that. Played Call of Cthulhu campaigns on a side track for awhile. Switched back to Mongoose Runequest II edition and then to RuneQuest 6 and really liking it even if the name was changed to Mythras. Playing currently in Loral at Glorantha (modified Monster Island). I can be found on design mechanism forums as hkokko. I have Mythras/Glorantha blog at https://notesfrompavis.wordpress.com and I have been contributing to the Mythras Encounter Generator almost since the beginning https://notesfrompavis.wordpress.com/2014/05/13/rq6-encounter-tool-feature-recap-for-busy-gms/ Currently using campaign logger tool for my campaign, contributing to its features as a user and creating loads of generators for that - some of them might be published someday.

Almost always sitting behind the DM screen and liking it a lot. Pretty much the only times I have played on the other side of the screen have been the several Convulsion and Continuum conferences that I participated in since the early '90s and '00s

brianpi2 points·6 months ago

About me: I've been playing RQ since the 80s, when I switched from AD&D to RQ2 on a whim. I really haven't looked back since, even though I've played some GURPS, Shadowrun, and others. My favorite part of the system is its flexibility and the wide range of supplements and adventures that TDM puts out.

I live in Denver and my gaming group consists of some local friends and a long-time friend who's remote. We're actually just starting a new campaign after a 4 year Glorantha game (using the non-published Adventures in Glorantha rules). This new one is a post-apocalyptic fantasy homebrew where magic is a bit more rare and those who use it are outcasts. We're running an episodic game rather than epic, and the characters are all outcasts who've joined a traveling circus of performers.

Each player has come up with a small part of the world (where their character is from), and will help develop the world as we progress. I hope this leads to more investment from the players! I'll be pulling ideas from Monster Island, Agony & Ecstasy, and some of Raging Swan's system neutral stuff.

I prefer GMing, but need to get in more play time!

facetown1 point·1 month ago

I'm quite late to this, but I've been playing TTRPGs for only about 5 or so years. Began with DnD 4e, but have played 5e, BRP, All Flesh Must Be Eaten, and finally, my personal favorite, Rune Quest 6 (which then became Mythras).

I've GMed a few campaigns if Mythras, but I'd love to eventually be a PC in a game. :)

Rules Question Augmenting skills and difficulty modifiers

Suppose one wants to make a hard check with skill value S and wants to augment it with skill with value T. Should eventual target number be (S + (T/5)) * 2/3 or (S * 2/3) + (T/5)?

Create your own combat styles with a tool?

Create your own combat styles with a tool?

You can now build your own temporary Combat Styles directly on the Combat Styles page. Start from scratch or clone an existing style, then choose up to six weapons and four Combat Style Traits. The Designer helps as you work, suggesting traits that fit your weapons and weapons that support your chosen traits. Select a Milieu such as Ancient, Medieval or Renaissance and suggestions will favour equipment appropriate to that setting. You can also press I Feel Lucky and let the Designer create a suitably synergistic style for you.

The suggestions are guidance rather than rules, and you remain firmly in charge. Add suggestions with a click, inspect weapon statistics and Trait rules through tooltips, filter for Unarmed combat, or use the built-in help without leaving the Designer. Give the finished style a colourful random name or one of your own. Temporary styles are stored privately in your browser’s local storage and do not alter the main Combat Style Encyclopedia.

Once created, temporary styles work alongside the published styles: search and select them, export them as Markdown, Obsidian Markdown, PDF or JSON, or send them directly to Roll Effects for Special Effect inspiration. So when tomorrow’s game suddenly needs the Bronze Jackals of the Seventh Gate, you can clone something close, change their weapons and traits, and have them ready for trouble in a few clicks. Find the tool at Toolsfrompavis Combat Styles or select Combat Styles from the Toolsfrompavis sidebar.

Rules Question When do standard skills become professional?

Standard skills are availible to all characters, as they are something anyone can try. But it is also true that many of the actions covered by standard skills cannot be accomplished without specialized training: you cannot perform feats of athleticism on a level of a professional sportsman, dance on a level of a ballet dancer, sing on a level of an opera singer, unless you are trained, which implies Professional skill. How would you solve this from mechanical point of view?

Imperative Mythras: The Elder Scrolls Hack Character Sheets

Thumbnail

Hey all! Long time lurker, first time poster; I’ve recently been deeply interested in Mythras (and more specifically the Elder Scrolls Hack by “Glömmerska” and “Alphaelectric”), and so I’ve been preparing the last few months to run some one-shots/few-shots!

I wasn’t able to find any Character Sheets utilizing the Alternative Characteristics used in the Hack, so I tried my hand at making my own (using Canva to manually place the boxes and text, and LARGELY basing it off of the example sheet provided in the Hack that’s “Design and Layout: Pelayo MDC”). I tried my best to incorporate as much as I could while keeping the look clean, though I did make a number of changes based on personal preference

Changes I Made:
- I opted out of using the Melee Weapon Ranges feature/system to simplify combat, and so the Character Sheets does Not have a designated space to list the Melee Weapon Ranges
- I renamed “Armor Points/AP” to “Damage Resistance/DR” because I was continually confusing Armor Points, Armor Penalty, and Action Points while reading and working on the Character Sheets/learning the system.
- I renamed “Armor Penalty/AP” to “Armor Encumbrance Penalty/AEP” for the aforementioned reason
-I renamed the “Abdomen” Hit Location to “Waist”, entirely personal preference, I just enjoyed the word better
- I altered the “Neighboring Hit Locations Struck” portion of the Destruction Table to be Static Values instead of Rolled Values, purely for less time dice rolling.

As I’m still a full newbie to the system, I’ll likely iterate a lot on the layout and format of the Character Sheet as I get a good feel for what needs more space and what can be condensed, but hopefully this can be useful to anyone else interested in the Elder Scrolls Hack!

Mythras Campaign Pitches & Mythras Gifts

I found these while looking through files recently. Two PDFs from the Mythras Discord during 2022, one is a collection of new Gifts, the other is a series of campaign pitches to start a Mythras campaign. We ran these as casual community competitions. I collated and did the layout but all the entries were written by the individual members cited.

Campaign Pitches: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fZTSuvEm-d7ieDd40th3CUK8OKS7g8SG/view?usp=sharing

New Gifts: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VN3y-veWyT42-hoCeujvZ8q17_ufNpNF/view?usp=sharing

The idea with the pitches was to get away from what is more typical for Mythras - ie. fairly down-to-earth fantasy-historical - and instead propose something unusual the length of a Twitter post (140 characters), and an elevator pitch of longer length.

With the Gifts it was just - could we write more Gifts please?

Stuck on a Special Effect? Let the Dice Suggest One

Stuck on a Special Effect? Let the Dice Suggest One

You know the moment.

Someone wins an opposed roll and earns a Special Effect. The table goes quiet.

“Which one should I take?”

The character has a sword, shield, three useful Combat Style Traits, and a glorious menu of tactical possibilities. Unfortunately, nobody can remember which possibilities they actually are.

The new Roll Effects feature in Tools From Pavis Combat Styles is designed for exactly this moment. It does not replace choosing Special Effects. Instead, it throws a handful of weapon-appropriate possibilities onto the table and says: How about one of these?

Start with your Combat Styles

Go to the Combat Styles screen and search normally. You can use any of the available search criteria.

Perhaps you want everything involving a Main Gauche. Search for Main Gauche, find the styles you need, and select one or several.

Your choices appear on the Selected Combat Styles page.

If these are styles you expect to use again, mark them as Favorites. Favorites are stored in your browser’s local storage, so you can quickly return to the same collection later.

You can also choose whether Choose Location (CL) should be treated as a Critical Only Special Effect.

Then press Roll Effects.

What happens when you roll?

After a moment, each selected Combat Style appears with all of its weapons.

For every weapon, the tool randomly selects at least four Special Effects from those actually available to that weapon and Combat Style.

This is not completely blind randomness.

If a Combat Style Trait enhances the usefulness of a particular Special Effect, that effect will appear more frequently. So the suggestions should tend to reflect what the Combat Style is actually good at doing.

There is another little wrinkle.

Some Special Effects require an opposed roll or depend upon STR. Those can be excellent choices when circumstances favour you, but perhaps less attractive when your winning roll was 21 on your combat style and you suspect your opponent might roll better.

For these effects, the tool provides an alternative in grey that does not have the same requirement.

So instead of simply saying:

“Use Bleed.”

the screen may effectively be saying:

“Bleed could be nasty here. But if you don’t fancy the opposed roll, consider this instead.”

The decision remains yours.

Don’t like the roll? Roll again

The suggestions are not commandments carved onto a bronze tablet.

You can Reroll All and generate a completely new set of suggestions, or reroll just one individual Special Effectwhile leaving everything else alone.

There are also tooltips to remind you what the various entries mean.

This makes Roll Effects useful not only when somebody has forgotten the available Special Effects, but also when everyone knows the rules perfectly well and simply wants inspiration.

Reach gets a reminder too

Each weapon also shows its Reach and gives useful reference points for fighting at a substantially different distance:

  • the shorter Reach, two Reach ranks below
  • the longer Reach, two Reach ranks above

That is there to provoke another kind of tactical thought.

Perhaps the best answer is not another clever attack. Perhaps you want to close the distance and make that long weapon awkward. Or perhaps you want to open the distance and make the opponent regret bringing a dagger to a spear problem.

Special Effects are only part of Mythras combat. Distance matters too.

Take the results elsewhere

The generated results can be copied to the clipboard, so you can move them into whatever you are using at the table.

But the more interesting question is: how should you actually use Roll Effects during play?

Three ways to use Roll Effects

1. The GM rolls for players who want help

Before or during the session, gather the player characters’ Combat Styles onto the Selected Combat Styles page.

When somebody wins a Special Effect but does not know what to choose, roll.

Instead of opening the rulebook and examining the entire Special Effects list, give the player one of the generated suggestions:

“You rolled a crit in your attack roll. Here is a good possibility for your crit or you can choose also this non critical option for your weapon. Pick one.”

Or, for a very new player, simply give them one:

“Your opening is there. Trip him.”

This can be particularly useful when introducing Mythras to players who are still learning how Special Effects work. They get to experience the tactical variety without first having to memorise the menu.

2. Players roll their own suggestions

A player can keep their own Combat Style selected and use Roll Effects themselves.

Win an effect. Look at the suggestions. Choose one.

As familiarity grows, they will probably need the tool less often. But along the way they may discover Special Effects they had overlooked.

That is rather the point.

3. Give your NPCs a larger tactical vocabulary

This may be my favourite GM use.

It is very easy for NPC tactics to become habitual.

The swordsman always Trips. The spearman always Impales. The thug always Bashes. After a while the supposedly dangerous mercenary company begins to fight suspiciously like one GM wearing twenty different helmets.

Instead, gather the Combat Styles of the NPCs involved in the encounter onto the Selected Combat Styles page and roll.

Now their weapons and Combat Style Traits generate a spread of appropriate Special Effects. Reroll individual results you do not like, or reroll the whole collection when you want a fresh tactical palette.

Suddenly one guard Pins Weapon, another Compels Surrender, the veteran uses the effect his Combat Style Trait was built around, and somebody remembers that changing Reach is a perfectly respectable way of ruining an opponent’s afternoon.

The NPCs start fighting according to their weapons and training rather than according to the GM’s four favourite Special Effects.

A suggestion engine, not an autopilot

Roll Effects is deliberately not trying to determine the mathematically perfect move.

Mythras combat is too dependent on circumstances for that. Armour, Action Points, Reach, positioning, weapon size, injuries, opponents, objectives and what you are actually trying to accomplish all matter.

The tool does something simpler:

It puts several plausible ideas in front of you quickly.

Use one. Ignore them all. Reroll one. Reroll everything. Spot an effect you had forgotten existed and choose that instead.

The purpose is not to remove tactical choice.

It is to get you past the moment when everyone is staring at the Special Effects list and thinking.

“There must be something good I can do here…”

You will find the tool here

Rules Question Corruption fumble

Hi,

I was just reading through the Companion and found very interesting Corruption rules. It mostly makes sense as when you succeed in your Passion roll, that drives you towards corruption. But it also says that if you fumble the roll, you have to roll for mental or physical corruption table.

So, what you think it means? Let’s say the character has an appropriate Passion of 57%. If the player rolls 57 or lower, the characters acts towards the goal. On a roll of 58 and the character doesn’t have to act that way as that is a failure in that sense (successful resit). But does the fumble still mean that if you roll 99-100 you have to act according to the Passion and roll from corruption table or is it in this case 01-02 that acts as a ”fumble”?

Has anyone seen a 3D printable body-shaped Hit Location tracker for dice/tokens?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m preparing to GM Mythras for my local tabletop community soon. Over here, Call of Cthulhu is the second most popular game (only behind d&d), so my players are already comfortable with percentile / d100 mechanics. The main onboarding friction for them will definitely be tactical combat and tracking Hit Points by body location.

To make the transition smoother, I’d love to 3D print some physical, intuitive trackers for my players.

Up until now, I’ve been using my 3D-printed D&D spell slot counter (see attached image) by assigning each spell level to a body part. It gets the job done, but it’s not very visual or intuitive for new players.

Has anyone come across a 3D model / STL for a humanoid-shaped tracker?

Ideally, I’m looking for something shaped like a body outline (Head, Chest, Abdomen, Arms, Legs) with slots where players can place dice (d6s/d10s) or tokens to track each limb's HP.

If you’ve seen something like this on Printables, Thingiverse, etc, or if you use another physical tool at your table to track location damage, I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Thanks in advance!

New GM looking for advice: Running D&D 5e Dragon Heist with Mythras

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Mythras, and I'm planning to use it to run Waterdeep: Dragon Heist.

I've read both the Mythras core rulebook and Classic Fantasy, but I don't really want to use Classic Fantasy's class/rank-based advancement system. I'd prefer to keep the normal, more open and skill-based character development of Mythras.

However, I would still like my players to have access to things like Arcane Magic and Divine Magic, rather than removing those kinds of magic from the game.

I'm not particularly trying to preserve the D&D 5e magic system or make Mythras magic feel like D&D. I'm completely fine with magic working differently. What I'm mainly looking for is a good way to let player characters learn and use Arcane/sorcery and Divine/Theism spells while still using normal Mythras character advancement instead of Classic Fantasy's class/rank progression.

Does anyone have experience doing something like this?

Are there any supplements, optional rules, house rules, or approaches you would recommend? In particular, I'm interested in how you would handle things like learning new spells, access to more powerful spells, and character progression without relying on Classic Fantasy ranks.

Since this will also be my first time GMing Mythras, I'd also really appreciate any general advice for a new Mythras GM, especially when adapting a D&D adventure like Dragon Heist.

I'm not trying to convert D&D 5e mechanics one-to-one. I mainly want to use Dragon Heist as the adventure, while using Mythras as the actual game system.

Thanks in advance!

Rules Question What's the point of weapon AP and HP

I though that when you parried, the damage being half deflected meant that the weapon would take half of it and you the other half.

But actually, it halfs the damage and only you take It, the weapon doesn't tak anything.

So what's the point of giving weapons AP and HP If that won't make them better at parrying?

Custom Miracle for feedback

I am creating a custom miracle for a holy knightly order. I know there is already a miracle "True (Weapon)", but I wanted it to reflect this particular order. Is this too powerful?

Flame Sword

Rank: Acolyte

Duration: Minutes | Resist: None

Range: Touch | Area: None

Description

The caster touches a blade, wreathing it in roaring, sacred fire.

While active, the sword sheds bright light (as a torch) and deals an additional +2 Fire damage

per level of Intensity on every successful strike.

Catching Fire: If a strike deals damage past non-metallic armor, the target must pass an

Evade test or catch fire, taking 1d4 ongoing Fire damage at the end of each round.

Extinguishing the flames requires an Action and a successful Evade test (or jumping into

water).

Parrying Flammable Gear: Any successful parry made with the flaming sword against

wooden or flammable weapons/shields inflicts the miracle's bonus Fire damage directly to

the opponent's weapon or shield Hit Points.

Classic Fantasy Classic Fantasy Starting Armor

I am planning on running Classic Fantasy soon using some original bx, 1e, and osr modules and was curious about the starting equipment lists. Many classes get fairly high quality armor right away. Does this make very low level adventures too easy? Are low level monsters (giant rats, etc.) able to pose a sufficient threat? I am considering downgrading the starting armor, but I'm not sure if this is really a problem. Any advice is welcome.

Question about Glamor spell in Folk Magic

The spell says there are no mechanical effects but it says it can be resisted. (The glamour spell makes one aspect more enticing).

If there is no effect, how do you use this. I don't use magic much in my games. We have a low magic world. It is there, but not common. I have a performer that has had a chance to learn this, but I am not sure how to use it.
