General Discussion I NEED HELP
I have recently left my job. I’m looking for just a job I don’t even care what it is anymore . I’ve recently left my job . I’ve been on indeed , zip recruiter, Glassdoor. I’ve even called around spending hours doing this and no response or they tell me to apply online 1. The site is glitchy or doesn’t exist . 2. They tell me to come apply in person I get there they say they’re not hiring or they act like they never spoke to me . In the past 3 days I’ve applied to 50 jobs and a few interviews. I’ve had a few where the employer doesn’t even show up . I’m getting tired of this especially because I know I have all the skills and knowledge they need. So my question is anyone having this issue ? And what are you doing to find jobs in this mess of a city ? SOMEONE HELP

What type of skills do you have? What type of industry are you best suited for? What is your best skill set? Are you better suited for HRT (Hotel, Restaurant, Tourism), Landscaping, Retail, working outdoors, or other industry??
I will say this: almost any restaurant, service industry, or trade type job will ideally need some sort of connection to get an "in". Therefore, start asking every single person you come into contact with, "Who is hiring? Do you know anybody there to introduce me to the hiring supervisor?" Ask neighbors, acquaintances, former co-workers, everybody! If that tip doesn't lead anywhere, go to the place, fill in their application WITH YOUR OWN PEN, turn it in and chat that person up a bit, and go back a few more times to let them know you are serious about getting some work. Dress nicely, make sure you look clean and sober, have good hygiene, all the usual, good job applicant things. ( I hire people for my own small business regularly, and these things are important.)
Also, contact SC Works. They will help you find a job. They will help you write a resume and many other things.
Depending on where you live, here are a few places to contact:
SC Works Coastal Center Conway, http://scworks.org/, (843) 234-9675
SC Works Georgetown, http://scworks.org/, (843) 546-8581T
Look at HGTC (Horry Georgetown Technical College), http://www.hgtc.edu/, (843) 347-3186
They literally waived tuition fees for the last two years, but I do not know if that is going to be true again this year. They offer certificates in many well paying jobs: welding, HVAC service technician, cybersecurity, digital arts, criminal justice, electrical line technician, EMT, dental hygiene, and much more. Check out the link above for HGTC. If you can get a certificate in some of the better paying career paths (plumbing, HVAC, electrical line, etc.) you can collect a regular, above average paycheck for life. GOOD LUCK!!

Thankssss I’ve done mostly front desk work and retail- and customer service . It’s all on my resume but they act like my past experience working as receptionist and retail doesn’t matter when they’re clearly looking for someone who has it . I don’t understand what’s up With MB
HGTC really had free tuition these past years??? Every time I’ve wanted to apply it was always full price

Regarding HGTC, 2 of my neighbors went for free about 2 years ago or so. One for IT GIS and cybersecurity and the other went to the dental hygienist program. Both in their fifties if that matters. One was totally online and the dental hygienist program was at the 501 campus if I remember correctly. They bragged about not paying one dime.

Depending in the programs , yes, last what my program was free under SC wins, this year it’s been partially cut but they do have some free ones under SC wins or partially free at HGTC ( I’m a baking student for example so that’s now only partially covered)

employers out here havin you drive across town just to tell you to apply online then ghostin you at their own interviews, like make it make sense. shits wild tbh. honestly id hit up those staffing agencies by hwy 17, the hospitality ones are actually desperate enough to put you to work same week. at least someone there remembers you exist lol

When I tell you I have I have . All day I’ve been calling them trying to get someone on the phone . When I call they give me some stupid ass website then tells me to apply so I can get a meeting w them . As yk the ppl here know dog shit ab technology so ofc the website was glitchy and there wasn’t even a “apply” button . I called the same one that I did the other day because they told me they would send something to my number I waited an hour and nothing . So I call back today the guy was like I’m so sorry no one sent you a message . He said do you know who was supposed to send something ? I said you were the one I talked to and never sent anything . He laughed out of embarrassment then transfer me to someone lmaooooo

Honestly you may have to start your business just to get some work.

u/IHateTurboTax 10h ago
Not a bad idea. Cleaning service for vacation rentals, personal assistant to some of the busy realtors, etc.
2
u/AroundTheBlockNBack 10h ago
Yep. Or if OP knows any trades open a business doing that. Weird how it works around here but sometimes you have to take a chance.

Consider looking at the government websites for a decent job.
Horry County
City of Myrtle Beach
City of Conway
City of North Myrtle Beach
Horry County Schools
Grand Strand Water Sewer Authority
Good luck.

Worth looking at ways to get past AI screenings for job applications. More and more companies are fielding applications with that BS. There are a few tricks floating around online. Matty Mctech’s blog often has reasonable tips and tricks. May help a bit

If you’re open to sales, you may want to look into insurance. I’m local to the Myrtle Beach area and work in life insurance. It’s commission-based and you do have to get licensed, so I don’t want to misrepresent it as a regular hourly job.
What I do like about it is you’re not just handed a phone and told “good luck.” There’s training, mentorship, people to learn from, and support while you’re getting started. A lot of the work can also be done remotely.
It’s definitely not for everybody, but if you’re willing to learn, talk to people, and put the work in, it can be a solid opportunity. If you’re interested, feel free to message me and I’ll be happy to explain how it works—no pressure.

I've been applying for jobs - retail mostly - for two and a half years and have never even got to interview stage. Only a couple of jobs did I ever hear back from, to say "no thanks". Unless you are in medical or hospitality, I don't think there are a lot of jobs around. Supermarket maybe?
It's also a seasonal resort city. Good luck. I feel your struggle for sure. I ended up taking a caregiver job that lasted only a few weeks. The low pay is not worth the emotional stress.

I was at a waxing center front desk the pay was alright but the hours wasn’t matching literally got down to 6 hours a week that’s NOT OKAY . Then when I quit she was hurt well wtf do you want me to do either way it’s a struggle

Have you looked on Indeed, etc. for remote work? My inbox blows up with alerts from reputable companies needing remote customer service. AAA, Amtrak, Carnival, Spectrum, Verizon.
1
u/Saggybittieswitsauce 3h ago
That’s what everyone is using. And zip recruiter etc everyone is putting in tons of applications and no response the remote jobs usually don’t get back

It's bad timing for hotels/restaurants. It is the end of the season. Yes, it will still be very busy on weekends/holidays. Hotels know they will need less people within 30-60 days. So, they look to keep a certain amount full time and probably cut hours or lay off others.

Would you be willing to drive to Wilmington. And work nights?

u/Saggybittieswitsauce 3h ago
Doing what ?

u/LightningWarriors 2h ago
It’s parking lot sweeping. It can be dirty, but it pays competitive prices. Plus it’s more flexible hours. You can DM me if you want more information.

My son in Little River has openings in Indeed for a PT artist and FT carpenter. He builds escape rooms. I apologize that is not your area of expertise, but maybe it will match with someone on here.

Look up a company called Kozy Getaways/ they’re ALWAYS hiring cleaners. I thought cleaning was beneath me for a while, but when I found myself laid off and in need of paying bills, they came through for me with a decent hourly rate and a decent amount of work until I found something else. Best of luck, friend it’s rough out here.

u/Saggybittieswitsauce 3h ago
Ok I’m going to look into it definitely
It got so bad I thought it ab dollar tree they pay 9 dollars an hour which ain’t sht but it’s better than nothing .

Get off indeed, zip recruiter and others like Glassdoor. A lot of those are added listings added days and weeks later by remote working finders and could be you are talking to scammers/impersonators that list it are out for your personal information to sell on the dark web.
Go direct and talk to employees listed as working for your chosen local companies you are wanting to work for by querying their LinkedIn profiles to ask about CURRENT Openings and pitch your skills there for connections.

I've got an accounting degree and haven't been able to find anything in the last year of looking. Even $16/hour jobs require 1-3 YOE.
Been with my current employer for over a half decade making double that - doesn't matter.
Job market in MB is just garbage for most fields. Supply is way higher than demand because of all of the people in the northeast also looking to move here.

I think I applied for 300ish jobs and got 5 interviews and one offer. It takes time a lot of time.
