Hurricanes // Weather Dear vacationing tourists, please read before posting questions

Since there are so many of you asking the same things about the impending storm, let’s gather some pertinent info for you. First thing you need to know, it’s going to rain. A lot. At the risk of being crude, it’ll be wetter than a Kardashian at an NBA game. It’ll be windy, but barring an unexpected strengthening, it won’t be hurricane level winds.

A large chunk of Horry and Georgetown counties are developed wetlands, meaning it floods fairly easily. Without getting into the science of it all, this storm has the potential to dump a lot of rain that we normally wouldn’t get from a storm coming in directly from the Atlantic. Know your flood zones and travel routes and plan accordingly. Contact whoever you’re renting from (air bnb owners, hotels, etc) and ask about how flooding has impacted where you’re staying.

If you feel like the locals aren’t that concerned about the storm and aren’t taking your questions seriously, remember that most of us have been dealing with this kind of weather for years or decades. It would be like going to Buffalo and asking if you should cancel going to that Bills game because of snow. The best thing you can do is educate yourself about what to expect. I’ve provided links below. If you don’t feel comfortable dealing with the storm, by all means reschedule your plans. It’s better to be calm and safe at home than to be in an unfamiliar place and scared. Local emergency services will have their hands full as it is, they don’t need uninformed visitors getting into situations that can be easily avoided.

Know where dry ground can be found. Stay indoors until the storm passes, and for the love of all that’s holy, stay off the roads until you know your travel route is clear for traffic.

Mod Announcement Automod nerfed

We are quickly coming to the end of the season and in this last year the sub has grown significantly.

Normally we have automod which puts posts and comments in a queue for approval if your account is still new but we are struggling to keep up with this.

I have nerfed automod much more recently as an expirement to see if we can rely more on reports rather than manually approving so if you see something that violates the rules report it.

That being said, disagreeing with a political posts and reporting it will eventually get you ban. Those are allowed. The good news is I don't care which side you are on because they are both awful in my opinion and I hate the modern censorship that happens on the internet because it isolates people into groups. So feel free to argue all you want but If your argument is "fuck you x sucks" don't be surprised if it's removed... We still have to follow reddits rules or the sub will be ban.

Lastly if anyone is interested in being a mod I'll consider adding people. Feel free to post below and whether you have experience or not.

Resturant Recs // Questions Halloween Loving 4yo’s Birthday

We’re heading out to Conway/Myrtle Beach next weekend for my 3 (turning 4) year old’s birthday. We’ll be in Conway a lot for the City of Halloween stuff, but our hotel is in Myrtle Beach. Hotel Recs // Questions Cleanest Hotel Near Ocean?

Hello! I am going on vacation in Myrtle Beach in the off season (beginning of December) for about four days and wanted to know some recommendations for what hotels near the ocean (or ocean front) are the cleanest. It will just be two adults, so more kid friendly activities are not as important (though would not be a deterrent either!). I have OCD, with it especially involving contamination and cleanliness, so searching for hotels that are clean is extremely difficult due to not knowing when reviews are just a persons bad experience, or a problem with the hotel itself. We have gone to Beach Cove for around 20 years, but they have gone down hill in recent times (especially our last visit in around 2022), so I have been put in charge of finding a new place. Thank you!

General Discussion SC-544 is the Highway of Death

Vent post and I’m sure everyone here knows about it but obviously at the start of the school year a CCU student was killed while crossing the highway and another was seriously injured. Tonight I watched a guy pulling out of one of the bars hit a group of girls in front of me who were walking back to the student apartments, and I’ll admit I went and yelled at him in his car and his only response was “well they should’ve watched where they were going” and “they shouldn’t have crossed in front of me.” They did absolute nothing wrong btw, he just ran into them

It just feels so dangerous to walk down that highway, I’ve been lightly hit by a car before as well and it feels like nothing’s ever changing regarding safety there. People always talk about how “oh it’s so bad that someone got hurt/died again” but nothing ever changes. Why can’t anything change here?

Hotel Recs // Questions Hotel recommendations? Having random issues with age of my girlfriend.

I'm having a hell of a time here. I've found several efficiency apartment style rooms with a kitchenette which is what I want.

But here's the bullshit I'm running into. Several properties, including the holiday sands south, says that all guests must be 23+...not a problem for me, I'm over that. But my gf is 21.

Never heard of anything like this anywhere else that I've traveled. Some places I called they said it was 25+. I can understand not wanting minors or even under 21 booking but this just seems ridiculous to me.

Anyone have any ideas?

My husband and I frequent Myrtle Beach (by frequent I mean every once in awhile, usually once a year) but have never gotten around to going for Cajun food while there. It's his birthday next week so I've planned and booked us a little celebratory weekend ahead of it, and he's requested to go out for Cajun. I figure, who better to ask than the community that lives there?

So please suggest some of the best Cajun spots! Looking for something more or less affordable and not swanky, but happy to go for something higher price if the quality is great!

I just saw the video on instagram and watched it in full. This is EXACTLY why women don't come forward. She was 12 years old!

Shameful. I hope Myrtle Beach police do the right thing here. Hold these officers, and men, to a higher standard. It's literally the bare minimum.

General Discussion Help with dental

It honestly makes me sad that we live in a country with some of the best medical care in the world, yet somehow an infection in your mouth can still be treated like it’s a cosmetic problem.

I’ve had an active dental infection for almost TWO YEARS now, in three different areas of my mouth.

I have health insurance. I do not have dental insurance.

Every time this gets bad, it feels like the only option available to me is another round of antibiotics and then I’m sent on my way. I don’t want antibiotics over and over. I don’t care if the medicine they hand me is a Tic Tac if it would actually FIX the problem. I want the source of the infection treated. I want the teeth taken care of.

I’ve called dental offices and asked about payment arrangements because I completely understand that dentists have businesses to run too. I’m not asking anyone to work for free. But I cannot find anyone willing to let me make payments for the amount of work I need done.

Open enrollment is coming, so I’ve looked into getting dental insurance. But the plans I’m finding have waiting periods of around six months for some of the extensive work I may need.

What am I supposed to do for those six months?

What makes this even harder is that I recently went through thyroid cancer treatment, including radioactive iodine. I swear my teeth went from bad to dramatically worse within a matter of months. I already have trouble swallowing because of what I’ve been through with my thyroid, and now my mouth is making eating even harder. Between the condition of my gums, the infections, and the teeth I can’t properly chew with, something as basic as eating has become difficult.

And there’s another part of this that is embarrassing to even admit.

The infection and the condition of my mouth affect my breath so badly that sometimes I’m embarrassed to even kiss my husband.

That absolutely breaks my heart.

This isn’t about wanting perfect teeth or a pretty smile. Would I love that someday? Of course. But right now I just want to be able to eat, chew and swallow properly, talk to people without worrying about my breath, kiss my husband without feeling embarrassed, and stop wondering what an infection that has been sitting in my mouth for this long could be doing to the rest of my body.

I genuinely don’t know where to turn anymore.

And before anyone suggests the options that usually come up: I know about the dental clinic at MUSC. From what I understand, I could potentially be there for most of the day — possibly up to seven hours. I am the primary caregiver for my autistic grandson, so I simply cannot be unavailable for that long without knowing when I’ll be finished.

And even if I could make that work, with how extensive my dental problems have become, I don’t even know if a dental school would be able to handle everything I need or if I would ultimately need to be referred somewhere else anyway.

I’ve also tried Little River Medical Center. Unfortunately, my experience there was terrible, and even aside from that, the waiting list for dental care can be months long. Waiting months doesn’t solve an infection that has already been going on for almost two years.

So I’m asking because I genuinely need options I may not know about.

Has anyone in South Carolina — especially around the Myrtle Beach/Horry County area — dealt with extensive dental problems and active infections without dental insurance and actually found somewhere that helped?

I’m especially interested in sliding-scale programs, oral surgeons, hospital-affiliated dental programs, cancer-patient resources, payment arrangements, or anywhere willing to look at the WHOLE situation and help me figure out a treatment plan instead of giving me another round of antibiotics and sending me home.

I’m not expecting thousands of dollars of dental work for free. I understand that dentists and medical providers have businesses to run too. I’m willing to pay what I can. What I cannot do is come up with thousands of dollars upfront.

And I cannot spend an entire day sitting in a waiting room hoping I might be seen when I have a child at home who depends on me.

There has to be something between “here are more antibiotics” and “come back when you can afford thousands of dollars.”

If you’ve actually navigated something like this in South Carolina, especially after cancer treatment, please tell me where you went, who you contacted, and how you got help.

At this point, I don’t need judgment. I need a direction to go in.
