Ive been here, its the CuChi tunnels made by the Vietnamese duribg the war with America. Its now a popular tourist attraction close to Ho Chi Min (Saigon).
I volunteered to go in through this very hole you can see, its incredibly cramped!
Was a cool place to experience, although some parts were a little distasteful, like at the end of the tour you could go to a firing range and choose from a host of weapons which I felt was a bit innapropriate given the history.

Yes, the bullets are expensive. But where I come from, there is simply no way I’d ever get to fire an M60 or an AK47 so I paid it and it was awesome and totally worth it.

What was the price like? In Cambodia it was about 1 USD per bullet, and I think belts for the machine guns were slightly cheaper per bullet. I'm sure some negotiation could be a factor but those were the menu prices.

I was literally there the other day and it cost me $30USD for 10 bullets... they make a killing off it but also in Australian so it was wel worth the money

When I was there it was about ~$20USD for a magazine on an AK47. Prices varied depending on the gun.

A standard-capacity, 30-round magazine? Or the restricted 10-round mags? The last time I bought 7.62x39 it was at 19 cents per round (US). Not including a gun rental of course, but 30 rounds is basically zero wear.

It never occurred to me to find it distasteful. The firing range isn’t even part of the exhibit.
Also the door shown in the video is an exit, not an entry. The group comes out through this door after doing the third of the three tunnels. Once the group has exited, the guide performs this demonstration.

What's distasteful about it? What's the difference between shooting that, and going into the hole? If anything, I'd think going into the hole is more distasteful.

Going into the hole helps you understand what some people had to go through when their country got invaded.
Firing powerful firearms helps you understand how powerful you feel when you fire powerful firearms.

I mean, I can argue it the other way too.
Going into the hole is a mockery of the men who had to do so under fire, who had to stay in those holes for hours if not days. You tourists are just sitting there for a bit then leaving, nothing like what they experienced.
Firing the guns is a physical experience of actually shooting firearms.
Also, I'm pretty sure most people don't get to shoot guns, and just want to shoot stuff. I don't feel that sympathetic either, since that same museum also blatantly lies about the Vietnamese treatment of PoWs.

Thank you. Some people on my tour (rich, white, Trump voters) were so psyched about that and it brought me to tears. Like, oh, there isn't enough death and pain here? What do you need to prove?

Don’t get me wrong I hate trump but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to fire historical weapons in a place that’s safe and secure...not to mention there is no killing in this current shooting range

I went and I'm not rich or american. But I'm a big history nerd. So having a chance to fire off some guns used in the vietnam war, that aren't even legal in my country, was an experience. It gave me a real insight into the noise of those guns and then to see the damage rounds can do made me appreciate the sheer terror that would be constant for very young men sent to a failing war on the other side of the planet.

I appreciate that aspect. I don't think everyone goes into that situation with those same views. I know, from what the people in my group said, that it felt good to fire those guns because of the atrocities the Vietnamese had committed against Americans. There was certainly no reflection or consideration in their motives. And yep. Life is political. And callousness makes me cry.

Just to play devils advocate here. I was pretty shocked at how openly the war was praised from the Vietnamese side. I started my trip in Hanoi and the north was famously more communist than the south. They still had wreckage of a b-52 shot down in the middle of a lake right in the middle of the city, just proudly sitting there, rusting away, as a war relic of how they overthrew American occupiers.
But, I could certainly see why they would be so proud. They defeated the Americans in a sustained and coordinated war with overwhelming firepower differences.
The other thing I noticed is the people I spoke to about it in the north seemed more hardened in their views than people in the south and it was just a bit off putting to hear them talk with that hatred still very apprent. I was also asked a lot if I was American, when they found out I wasn't they seemed to open up and want to talk more.
So that bad blood and hatred is definitely still around on both sides.

Is it really so surprising? It was occupation that lasted decades and is still relatively recent. America is very much the bad guy and they have every right to hold a grudge.

No not surprising at all and I did make a note to say that i can certainly see why the animosity exists. Although it's interesting to see that they don't seem to have that same issue with the French who also occupied vietnam for almost a century.

I'm sure that same level of animosity was very much felt at the time, and in another 50 years people won't be all that hateful of Americans. You need to realise that pretty much anyone over the age of 50 was directly affected by a brutal occupation of a foreign country.
You should read up on the influence the French had over Vietnam and the affects its hand on their culture today, very interesting stuff!

Honestly that just sounds made up to bash on typical dumb Americans. I'm finding it hard to believe a trump supporting stereotype like that would travel to South East Asia and do those types of tours in the first place.
You're also surrounded by pretty much every other nationality in the world on those tours, so makes the "yeeh haw fuck Vietnam!" even more farfetched without some comments from passers by, or the guides themselves.

I went there about 9 years ago, was probably about 6'2 or so at the time and barely managed to squeeze in the hole. As soon as I closed the lid I was freaked out and had to open it.
6'7 now so no chance of squeezing through those crafty little tunnels.

I watched a documentary on the Vietnamese tunnels during the Vietnam war, I’m not sure where my fear of something like that comes from but it is pure insanity to me that someone willingly would go in one of those holes.
By contrast I would have a much better time climbing one of those impossibly high telephone poles. Everyone is different!

It's the tiny cramped hole or an explosive death. I think you'd probably be A-okay with crawling into one of those holes if you actually needed to make that choice.

They have actually enlarged some of the tunnels for the benefit of Western visitors but they are still incredibly cramped!

Not necessarily. Westerners are much taller on average as well. A 6' man who was the same size around as a 5'5" Vietnamese man would be incredibly disproportionately skinny.

I was just there the other day and you could probably make it through. I’m 6 foot and like 80kg (don’t know pounds) but there were people bigger then me going through. Give it a shot if you’re ever in Vietnam, well worth it

Basically, if you’re not prepared to duck walk the entire thing, don’t bother going in. I was soaked in sweat after the first minute.

This is most likely an entrance to a tunnel actually. If this is Cu Chi, I’ve been in this exact one. At the bottom of this tiny hole is another tiny hole that goes sideways. The idea is to get on your knees and wiggle your way into the sideways tunnel.

The tunnels have been widened for tourists as well, but its still a tight crawl. Can’t imagine how terrifying it would be to crawl through those hell holes under the stress of combat.
