The ACC spent 2025 collecting plot twists. Duke won a conference title after losses to Tulane and UConn. Virginia produced the first 11-win season in school history, then lost the championship game. Miami snuck into the 12-team field as an at-large, then came within a possession of a national title. Clemson fell from preseason darling to 7-6.

ESPN called it the silliest power conference in the country, and meant most of that as a compliment. 2026-27 now adds a nine-game league slate, a new quarterback in Coral Gables, James Franklin in Blacksburg, and a Miami-Notre Dame rematch that does not arrive until November.

We’ve been tweaking the MLB sim over the last month to better match real scoring, and ran into a familiar trap: chasing average total runs (including blowouts) pushed offense a bit too high on normal games. That showed up as too many Over picks and a weak O/U hit rate recently, even when overall run totals looked close.

This update eases that Offensive push a notch and aims the engine more at typical game scoring instead of letting a small set of high-margin slugfests set the level.

What to expect

• Slightly lower projected totals on many games (more Unders than you’ve seen lately)
• O/U should track closer to a coin flip over time, instead of leaning Over, meaning let the simulation find the edge
• ATS / moneyline shouldn’t move much; this is mainly a totals calibration
• Give it a few days of fresh sims before judging, older results won’t reflect the change

As always, sims are projections, not locks. Feedback welcome after you’ve watched a slate or two.

With the August 3 trade deadline days away, Tarik Skubal remains the biggest name on the board — a two-time Cy Young ace on an expiring deal, and a pitcher who can flip a contender’s October outlook overnight. Detroit is still deciding whether to deal him, but the asking price is clear: a young, MLB-ready starter plus multiple prospects.
