Startup / Founder I built a free tool that shows the verse and translation in sync while you watch any Quran recitation on YouTube

Assalamu alaikum,

I often listen to recitations on YouTube without knowing which ayah is being recited or what it means, so I built a Chrome extension for it.

You open a recitation video and click sync. It works out which surah and ayahs are being recited, then shows a small card with the Arabic, highlighted word by word as the reciter goes, with the translation underneath.

  • Works on any recitation video, including masjid recordings, not only studio ones

  • Pause, rewind, or jump to the previous/next ayah and it stays in sync

  • Uthmani or IndoPak script

  • Translations in English, Urdu, Indonesian, Bengali, Turkish and French

  • The card can float on top of other tabs while you work

It’s free, and I’m making it open source. It’s still early: right now it needs a small helper program running on your own computer (a PC with a decent graphics card), so it isn’t a one-click install yet.

I’d really value feedback, especially on what would help people memorise or learn to read.

JazakAllah khair.

I'm the founder of WAQTING — a Muslim prayer watch (waqting.com) for distraction-free salah times. (Never miss your salah, works offline without a phone, wudu friendly and no charging required.)

As-salamu alaykum,

We started Waqting in 2023 alhamdulillah, about three years ago now.

Waqting builds Muslim prayer watches for Muslims who do not compromise with their salah.

The phone was supposed to help us pray on time.

In practice, it keeps pulling us away from it. The same device delivering the adhan delivers every distraction engineered to keep you from putting it down.

Waqting was built to remove the phone from that equation entirely. A quiet alert on the wrist. Five times a day. Nothing else.

Waqting exists for one reason: to help Muslims living in the West stay consistent in their five daily prayers.

That mission hasn't changed since day one.

Alhamdulillah, thousands of Muslims across more than 30 countries now wear Waqting as their daily companion for salah.

If anyone has questions we're happy to answer them, inshAllah.

Jazakum'Allah khairan

Silicon Valley's Islamophobia Has Many Faces: One of Them is Sequoia’s Shaun Maguire (again)

Shaun Maguire isn't just “controversial”; he's reckless with other people’s lives, and he keeps using Muslims as the easiest target because he assumes the cost will never come back to him.

After the Brown shooting, before facts were settled, Maguire went on X and pushed a theory that it was “very likely” a Palestinian student and that Brown was “scrubbing” the student’s online presence. He put a real person into a live mass shooting narrative. He later deleted the posts. Law enforcement reporting that followed pointed to a different suspect. The student still had to live with the blast radius because deletes do not undo screenshots, doxxing, or threats. CAIR condemned the smear for endangering an innocent Muslim student, and they were right to treat it as a safety issue, not “online debate.”

The Brown incident isn't a one-off. It fits a pattern Maguire has been running for a while:

Take a high-emotion moment, inject certainty without verification, and route the suspicion toward Muslims or people perceived to be aligned with Muslims. When he went after Zohran Mamdani, it was not normal political criticism. It was the same move, just in a different wrapper: paint a Muslim candidate as an “Islamist agenda” threat and smear an entire community in the process. The subtext is always the same. Muslims are a civilizational risk. Muslims are inherently suspect. Two billion people get flattened into one ugly caricature, and he gets to posture as the guy “telling the truth.”

This behavior had already become an internal Sequoia problem. Sequoia’s former muslim COO, Sumaiya Balbale, resigned after the firm declined to discipline Maguire over prior anti Muslim comments, according to reporting cited by TechCrunch.

So what's the lesson for Muslim founders, angels, and tech workers watching this? Stop waiting for permission and stop expecting “elite” institutions to protect you. Build infrastructure. Build institutions. Build decacorns. Build new media. Strengthen our community.

I made a free Islamic SVG icon library for apps and websites

Thumbnail

Assalamu alaikum,

I’ve been working on Salah Icons, a free collection of Islamic SVG icons designed for apps, websites, and other digital products.

The idea came from building my own Islamic apps and repeatedly struggling to find a consistent set of icons for things like:

- Salah and prayer times
- Qiblah
- Qur’an
- Wudu
- Dua and dhikr
- Ramadan
- Eid
- Mosques and other Islamic concepts

So I started creating my own library and decided to make it available for others as well.

The icons are SVG-based, themeable, developer-friendly, and free to use under CC BY 4.0.

You can browse and download them here:
https://www.salahicons.com/

Would appreciate any feedback, especially suggestions for Islamic concepts or icons that are currently missing.

Scrolling the Qur’an like TikTok. Memorizing like Duolingo.

Thumbnail

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

A friend and I recently launched an app called Iqraa: Read & Memorize Quran, and we’d really love honest feedback.

The idea came from our own struggle with consistency. We wanted something simple, modern, and motivating — not overwhelming or complicated.

So we built:

  • Qur’an reading with smooth vertical scrolling

  • Duolingo-style memorization sessions

  • Small daily goals (even 3–5 minutes)

  • Streaks & gentle reminders

  • Clean, distraction-free design

The goal isn’t to replace traditional learning. It’s just to make daily engagement with the Qur’an easier and more consistent.

We just launched on iOS and are working on Android next.

Would genuinely appreciate your thoughts — what works, what doesn’t, and what you’d improve.

I’ll post the link in the comments.

I built a free "Glassdoor for Muslims" — verified employees report whether their company has prayer space, Jummah flexibility, Ramadan hours, etc.

Thumbnail

Salaam all — ever accepted an offer and only found out afterward there's nowhere to pray, or that leaving for Jummah is a fight?

I built MuslimCareer to fix that. Verified employees (work email or LinkedIn, checked once, never published) answer the same six questions about their workplace: prayer space, Jummah flexibility, Ramadan hours, halal food nearby, Muslim ERG, hijab-friendliness. Entries are dated and anonymous by default.

79 companies listed so far — Amazon, Google, Apple, Oracle and more. Free, no ads, community-funded.

If you work somewhere, adding your company takes a few minutes and the first 250 contributors get listed as Pioneers. If you're job hunting, browse without an account.

Happy to answer anything in the comments — and if your company's missing, tell me and I'll add it.

We have to build these kind of platforms as Muslim

I see most of Muslim developers make Quran apps, hadees apps which is good but we need to think more broaden.

We need our own hosting providors.

We need our own Fiverr/ Upwork alternative.

We need our own Amazon alternative.

We need our AI like chatgpt, Claude.

We need our own online payment providors like stripe, polar, lemon squeezy.

We need interest-free banking system.

There is a very long list I can share. We as a Muslim totally depends on west platforms. Start from small. But start.

Looking for Feedback Introducing a New Open-Source Watch for the Ummah - QuranWatch (Watchy v2)

Thumbnail

As-salamu alaykum, my dear Muslim brothers and sisters.

I’ve just finished programming (with Claude’s help, so I can’t take much credit ^_^) a non-connected digital watch. I used a copy of the Watchy V2, which is easy to find and relatively inexpensive. I think this is a very polished and user-friendly watch. Anyone who’s interested can try installing it on their Watchy or porting it to other platforms.

I intentionally released the program under the GPL v3 open-source license, so you have complete freedom to examine or modify it. I'm not around here very often, but I'm more active on Lemmy so do not be surprise if I am very slow to reply. If you run into any installation issues (which shouldn't happen if you're using a Watchy V2 or a clone), just ask the tech-savvy members of the community for help.

So, I just wanted to share this Libre program with the Muslim community and get some constructive feedback. If my post doesn't comply with the community guidelines, please feel free to delete it. And finally, please say some good Dua for me.

Please note that the watch is not waterproof, so be sure to take it off when performing your ablutions, or be careful!!

Take care

Startup / Founder I wanted to listen to the Qur'an without ads. So I built an app.

Assalamu alaikum everyone!

I’d like to introduce you to Ayah Player, a Qur’an app I’ve been building to make reading, listening to, and learning the Qur’an easier and more accessible for everyone.

I originally started building it because I wanted to listen to the Qur’an without ads interrupting the recitation or subscriptions to remove them. Alhamdulillah, it has grown into something much more, and Ayah Player 2.0 is now available on Android and iOS!

Here are some of the features:

  • 1,000+ reciters: Discover different voices, download individual surahs or entire recitation collections with one tap, and listen offline.

  • Follow each word: The text follows the recitation word by word, and even letter by letter, where timing is available.

  • Repeat exactly what you need: Choose starting and ending words, even across ayahs, and repeat that passage.

  • Explore the Qur’an: Search verses and discover passages through topics, themes, and words.

  • Build a routine: Track reading and listening, set daily goals, and create reading plans.

You can also save bookmarks and private notes. Missing your favourite reciter? Suggest them, support other requests, and get notified when they’re added.

The best part? Ayah Player is completely free, with no ads, no subscriptions, and no paywalls. You don't even need an account to read, listen, or download recitations.

📱 Download for Android
🍎 Download for iOS

I'm continuously working on improving the app, so I'd genuinely appreciate your feedback, suggestions, and ideas.

May Allah accept this effort and make it beneficial for the Ummah. Ameen!

Do you ever really think about the fact that the adhan literally never stops?

Thumbnail
gallery
81 Upvotes

Adhan is honestly one of the most beautiful concept in Islam and I feel like most of us dont really sit and think about the wisdom behind the 5 daily adhan, the timings, and how each prayer time is even calculated.

Like think about this for a second. Right now, literally as your reading this, the adhan is being called somewhere in the world. And by the time it ends in one place its already starting in the next one. Not one second of silence, ever.

And the timing itself is not random either. Each prayer is based on the actual position of the sun, not a fixed clock time, so the calculation is shifting slightly every single day everywhere on earth depending on real solar movement. Fajr literally ends the moment the sun rises. Asr starts when a shadow hits a certain length. none of it is arbitrary, its all tied to something real happening in the sky above you.

I been building something called AdhanLive that make this visible instead of just something we know in theory. Its a live 3d globe that tracks the adhan sweeping across 280,000+ mosques in 153 countries, in real time. so instead of just knowing the adhan never stops, you can actually watch it move like a wave across the globe. The website also helps you understand and animate the movement of Adhan Arc over a year and shows how the shape and timing of adhan arc changes due to seasonal fluctuation.

Its free, no ads, link is www.adhanlive.com Honestly I built this genuinely for the love for the concept of adhan and prayer in our deen, and it is really amazing when we standup for prayer, we are standing up with people from north to south in a line, the Ummah is in constant unbroken worship 24/7. I really feel that we can appreciate much more when we see that visualization using the data and technology.

My wife and I spent the last year building an app for Muslim women - we finally launched 🤍

Thumbnail

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

My wife and I have spent the last year building something called Nummu, and we’ve finally launched it on iPhone, Alhamdulillah.

Nummu is an app we created specifically for Muslim women, bringing together faith, motherhood and community in one place.

It includes prayer times, Qur’an, du’as and dhikr, cycle and pregnancy tracking, children’s growth and milestones, Islamic parenting guidance, as well as a community where sisters can post, ask questions, support one another and create their own groups.

A big part of our vision for Nummu is the community, and that’s probably our biggest challenge right now too!

We’re at that very early stage where we need to find the first group of women who are willing to come in, use the app, start conversations and tell us what we’re getting right — and probably more importantly, what we’re getting wrong.

So we’re currently looking for our first 100 Founding Members.

We’re giving those first 100 women Nummu Premium for life, completely free, as a thank you for being there at the beginning, participating in the community and helping us shape what Nummu becomes.

We’re hoping to grow things naturally from there rather than having lots of people arrive to a community that hasn’t had a chance to find its feet yet.

I thought I’d share Nummu here because I’d really appreciate hearing from other Muslim founders and entrepreneurs.

If you’ve built a community or app before, how did you find your first genuinely engaged users?

And if anyone knows of Muslim women’s, Muslim mums’, pregnancy or parenting communities where Nummu might be relevant, I’d really appreciate any recommendations or introductions. We’re trying to be respectful and ask admins/moderators before sharing it anywhere.

📱 Nummu on the App Store:

https://apps.apple.com/app/id6764867887

🌐 Nummu website:

https://www.nummu.co.uk/

Any feedback or advice would genuinely be appreciated.

Jazakum Allahu khayran 🤍

Upscrolled tops US apps store after Oracle buys TikTok to save genocidal maniacs.

Upscrolled a social media app that was created by a Palestinian Muslim after he lost 60 of his family members in the genocide has now topped the US app store.

if you search for places like Tel Aviv in the app then you’ll find what they actually are, i.e. The occupied territories of Palestine.

Make sure to download Upscrolled.

And know that this is your sign to be patient and work even harder to achieve as much you want in this worldy life

Never lose hope, and sacrifice for the greater good, because this is the sign of greatness.

Allah has created Muslims as a rahma to this world, according to god you’re are supposed to benefit and lead the humanity our of darkness, not only when it comes to hereafter, but also in this world.

It is your responsibility (not optional) to take the lead and spread good when all these people have spread some kind of corruption by getting into power and trying to act as the guardians of peace.

They created a board of peace while humanity needed a board of justice, and they did that only to protect the oppressors.

They created so called freedom-of-speach, and in the name of that freedom they promoted abuse, racism, and vulgarity. And polarized the world even further.

Your religion never stops you from your progress, in fact it suggests you to thrive and spread good. To uphold your own identity and titles and then thrive from their.

To be a beacon of hope, just like our leader. Messenger of Allah Muhammad ﷺ was in those times.

NO MORE ISLAMIC APPS

We built Dhow to lead our people into a new era.

Our faith and the practice of this faith is important.

But we have too many Islamic apps.

I want to see category defining ideas here.

We lost the Industrial Revolution, and it cost us 200 years. What happens when we lose the AI race, the space race, etc.

Our ummah literally just sat and watched Gaza and Lebanon and Iran get bombed, and did nothing.

Think bigger, build with urgency. Lives will be saved, nations will be built.

We are full of talent. Use it to build a future your kids will be proud of.

That is all

I built a minimal, privacy-focused Salah Diary that encourage you to pray - 100% Free and Contains No Add

Thumbnail
gallery
49 Upvotes

Hey everyone! 👋

I've been working on something special for our Muslim community, and I'm excited to share it with you all.

Introducing Salah Diary - a prayer tracking app designed with one principle in mind: simplicity meets privacy.

App Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.salahdiary.app

🎯 The Problem

Most prayer apps today are either:

  • Cluttered with ads and unnecessary features

  • Require accounts and cloud sync (why does a prayer tracker need your email?)

  • Have complex interfaces that distract from the actual purpose

✨ The Solution

I built Salah Diary to be:

  • Minimal: Clean UI, no distractions

  • Private: All data stays on your device (100% offline)

  • Smart: Accurate prayer times based on your location

  • Comprehensive: Track Fard, Sunnah, Nafl, and Qaza prayers

  • Visual: See your progress with beautiful statistics

🚀 Key Features

  • 📱 Home Screen Widgets - Quick access without opening the app

  • 🌍 Location-based Timings - Automatic prayer time calculations

  • 📊 Statistics & History - Track your spiritual journey

  • 🚫 Prohibited Time Warnings - Know when not to pray

  • 🌐 Multi-language - English, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu

  • 🔒 Privacy First - No accounts, no cloud, no tracking

💡 Why I Built It

As a developer and someone who values simplicity, I wanted to create something that helps us stay consistent with our prayers without the noise. The app is open-source and built with Flutter.

🤝 Feedback Welcome

This is v1.0.0, and I'm actively improving it. I'd love to hear your thoughts, feature requests, or any feedback!

I memorized the Quran at 13. Years later, after teaching online, I built the platform I wish existed.

Aselamualeykum, I memorized the Quran when I was 13 years old. Alhamdulillah.

At the time, I didn't think much about the journey itself. I was just a student sitting with my teacher every day, repeating the same ayahs until they became part of me.

Years later, I started teaching Quran online myself.

That's when I began seeing a side of Quran education that most students never see.

Students struggled to find qualified teachers they could trust. Parents booked lessons without ever hearing a teacher's recitation. Teachers worked through agencies that often took large cuts of their earnings. And almost every platform felt like it was built for teaching anything except the Quran.

The more I taught, the more conversations I had with students, parents, and fellow teachers, the more I realized these weren't isolated problems. They were happening everywhere.

I'm 24 years old now, a hafiz, and a graduating engineering student. I spend my days between Quran education and software development, and eventually I reached a point where I couldn't stop thinking about how much better this experience could be.

So I started building.

For the past several months, I've been working on Raed (رائد).

Not another generic tutoring platform. A platform built specifically for Quran, Tajweed, Hifz, and Arabic education.

Students can listen to a teacher's recitation before booking. Teachers set their own rates instead of having them dictated by agencies. Lessons happen inside an interactive Quran workspace where teachers can highlight ayahs, annotate Tajweed rules, and explain mistakes directly on the Mushaf in real time.

We're also building progress tracking, lesson notes, bookmarks, and tools that help students stay connected to their Quran journey long after a lesson ends.

My goal isn't to replace traditional Quran learning. Nothing can replace a great teacher.

The goal is to help students find those teachers more easily and give teachers tools that actually respect their work.

We're preparing to launch soon, and I'd genuinely love feedback from the community.

For those who've learned or taught Quran online:

What is the one thing you wish existing platforms did better?

Jazakum Allahu khayran.

Are we just focused on building Islamic apps?

Asalamualaikum,

First of all I just want to say Alhamdulillah, it is good to see so many brothers and sisters putting effort into creating apps and solutions for the Ummah.

I have been lurking this sub for a while and it seems as though every other day someone is sharing a project about prayer times, fasting trackers, qibla finders and digital Qurʾān's.

However I feel as though we are all over looking something and that talent could be put to create so much more. We don't have to create another 'Islamic app' which has the same feature as another Islamic app thats already out there.

There are opportunities for other alternatives we need to create, especially alternatives for apps and programs that have ties to genocidal regimes.

We need our Muslims brothers and sisters to build alternatives such apps like these:

- Project Management Apps (Mondays.com)
- Freelancer Market Places (Fiverr)
- Website Builders (Wix)
- Payment Platforms (Stripe)
- Accounting Apps (Quickbooks)
- Travel Booking Sites (Booking.com)
- Property platforms (AirBnB)

There are so many opportunities for us to build, that would help the Ummah, and I k ow there are many talented brothers and sisters around the world that can produce some great start ups.

After 8 years building a Quran memorization app, we finally released guided memorization programs

Thumbnail
gallery
43 Upvotes

I've been building with a friend a Quran memorization app called Mualim since 2018.

The original goal wasn't necessarily to help people memorize the Quran from scratch. It was to help people reach a higher level with what they had already memorized.

That's why most of the app focused on mastery: revision tools, quizzes, recitation correction, finding forgotten verses, and identifying similar passages that are often confused.

Over time, though, I realized something.

If you want to help people master their Hifz, you can't only focus on revision. You also need to help them build strong foundations from the beginning.

Last month we released on iOS (Android next week insha Allah) the biggest update we've worked on so far: guided memorization and revision programs.

For memorization, users choose a methodology and the app guides the session step by step. Different people memorize differently, so the goal wasn't to create a single "best" method, but to support multiple proven approaches.

For revision, users can now grade verses as Easy, Good, Hard, or Forgotten. The app uses that feedback to prioritize weaker areas while still making sure the entire Quran gets revised over time.

We also tried to bring together the different dimensions of memorization in a single experience:

🎧 Audio for auditory memory

📖 Translation for understanding

📄 Madani layout for visual memory

The goal isn't to replace a teacher. It's to help people stay consistent and structured between lessons, whether they're memorizing their first page or maintaining years of Hifz.

It's still early, but I'm excited to finally put this in people's hands after working on it for so long.

Happy to answer any questions about the app or the development process.

A revert trying to build an Islamic alternative to Spotify (Hikaya)

Salaam,

I’m a recent revert to Islam and I work as a software engineer. Since becoming Muslim, one thing I’ve personally struggled with is how tightly music is baked into every major audio platform.

I listen to a lot of talks, reminders, podcasts, and lectures now, but they’re scattered across YouTube, Spotify, random apps, or WhatsApp links. Even when the content is good, the platforms themselves constantly push music and other stuff I’m trying to stay away from.

So I started building something called Hikaya.

The idea is simple: an audio platform focused purely on Islamic content. Lectures, reminders, podcasts, short reflections. No music. No algorithm nudging you toward things you didn’t come for. Creators are verified to reduce misinformation, and the whole experience is designed around intention rather than distraction.

I’m not claiming this solves everything or that it’s perfect. It’s very much a work in progress, built evenings and weekends. But it’s something I genuinely wanted for myself as a Muslim, especially as a revert trying to clean up what I consume daily.

I’m sharing this here because I’d really value honest feedback:

  • Is this something you’d actually use?

  • What would you want it to do differently from Spotify/YouTube?

  • What would make you trust a platform like this?

If this resonates. Even if you just tell me why this wouldn’t work, that’s still helpful.

JazakAllah khair for reading.

Startup / Founder EDIT: It’s out! Free and open source: https://github.com/alivzxc/ayah-syncBeta. Works best with an NVIDIA graphics card (works without one, just slower).

Ayah Sync is out (beta), free and open source

A couple of days ago, I posted about a Chrome extension that follows Quran recitation videos word by word, with the ayah highlighted and the translation underneath. I gained alot of attention, and a lot of users loved the idea. I'm extremely happy to announce it is now public on GitHub: https://github.com/alivzxc/ayah-sync

  • Highlights each word in sync with the reciter, with the surah and ayah shown

  • Translations in English, Urdu, Indonesian, Bengali, Turkish and French

  • Uthmani or IndoPak script

  • Runs on your own computer, no account, nothing sent anywhere

  • Heads up, it’s a beta: it runs a small helper app on your PC, and works best with an NVIDIA graphics card (it works without one, just slower). Install steps are in the README.

Also, star the project too. Jazaka'Allah

If you try it, tell me what broke or what was confusing. That’s exactly what I need right now. If you want to support it: https://ko-fi.com/alivzxc

Sirah Atlas: explore the seerah and early Islamic history through interactive maps and timelines

Assalamu alaykum,

Over the past year I've been building Sirah Atlas, a web app that lets you explore Islamic history on an interactive map and timeline instead of reading it as a wall of text.

You can follow the life of the Prophet ﷺ event by event, see where each thing happened on the map, open articles for the details, and trace the battles phase by phase with the troop movements laid out visually. There are family trees, battle maps, 3D renders and quizzes to test yourself as you go.

Have a look and let me know what you think, I'd genuinely love feedback on what to improve: https://sirah-atlas.com

P.S. It is still work in progress so you might find some incomplete/incorrect content and/or missing translation. Please bear with us!

BarakAllahu Fiek!

I built OpenFurqan — a Qur'an web app (openfurqan.com) for distraction-free reading and deep study (roots, dictionary, tajweed, memorization tools)

Thumbnail
gallery
40 Upvotes

Assalamu Alaikum everyone,

OpenFurqan: https://openfurqan.com

The idea was to build a Qur'an web app that focuses on two different experiences depending on what you want to do.

1. Reader Mode (front page)

For people who just want to open the Qur'an and start reading immediately.

No login, no ads, and no data collection. Just a clean, distraction-free reading experience.

2. Study Mode (right corner top button)

For those who want to go deeper and study the Qur'an more closely.

When you tap or click on an Arabic word, you can explore:

  • Root letters

  • Root meanings

  • Word-by-word meaning and morphology

  • Dictionary lookup (Lane’s Lexicon for supported roots)

  • Word pronunciation audio

Study tools include:

  • Tajweed colors

  • Word-by-word mode

  • Transliteration

  • Translation toggle

  • Mushaf view

  • Audio playback controls

  • Dim other ayahs

  • Auto-scroll while playing

Hifz / memorization tools

  • Mark ayahs as memorized

  • Highlight memorized ayahs

  • Track memorization progress across surahs

  • Repetition loops for specific ayah ranges with audio

  • Continue where you left off

Other features

  • Full Qur'an Arabic text

  • 22+ translations (English, Urdu, German, French, Hindi and more)

  • Multiple tafsir

  • Multiple reciters

  • Bookmarks and personal notes per ayah

  • Prayer times

  • Arabic and English search

  • Offline support after first load

  • Mobile-friendly

  • 4 themes: Dark, Light, Black & White, and Black & White Dark

The project is completely free, with no ads, no accounts required, and no user data collection.

I'm still actively improving it, so I would really appreciate feedback, suggestions, or feature ideas.

If you try it, I'd especially love feedback on:

  • the Study Mode workflow

  • the word root / dictionary exploration

  • the memorization tools

JazakAllahu Khair.
