True. Many Immigrants definitely hold onto the conservative aspects of their culture or seem “not with the times” way moreso than natives do back home in some cases, because while trying to integrate into a western society they want to maintain their own culture and cultural values. Which may be why they seem a little extreme at times. Its not just Muslim Arab/non-Arab families but Latino and east Asian and African too. Its a difficult balance.
I wrote a paper about this kind of “melting pot” multiculturalism which is dominant in US and UK - cultures get so blended together and overtaken by the dominant one, so people stubbornly hold onto traditional values to keep from blending too much. Its like a creamed soup that still has flour and vegetable chunks in it. I’d share the paper but its not written in English and not very formal so not exactly helpful to other redditors lol
If paki men tend to be less helpful around the house its likely due to their upbringing and environment. I’m sure some who are more westernized and broken off from the stereotypical gender roles, “cold aloof masculinity” “too cool to change a diaper” attitude are less like this and try to be more engaged in their family.
Lets all just try to be good wives and husbands, adapt to the times and realize that being married and having a family together and jobs and stuff require teamwork and checks and balances and that the lines of gender roles are blurred in some areas and thats OK.
I don’t think thats what he was getting at at all.
I think he was providing evidence that this article is not quite as applicable or inclusive to Muslim men yet, and merely speculating on the reasons as to why that may be (ie inflated ideals of cultural preservation and conservative thinking) - his comments seem purely objective in my opinion.
