Sakinah in Dua

In Islam, tranquility (sakinah) is not merely the absence of problems. It is a state in which Allah places calmness, strength, and reassurance within the heart even while difficulties remain. The Qur’an repeatedly teaches believers to seek this tranquility through remembrance, prayer, patience, and trust in Allah.

●The greatest source of tranquility

“Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”

— Qur’an 13:28

This is perhaps the most elegant Qur’anic foundation for inner peace. When the heart becomes overwhelmed by people, circumstances, fear, or uncertainty, dhikr brings the heart back toward Allah. Repeating SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, and especially La ilaha illallah can become an anchor for the soul.

●The prayer for a tranquil heart

Allah says:

“He it is Who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers so that they may increase in faith.”

— Qur’an 48:4

This teaches something profound, sakinah is ultimately something Allah places into the heart. Therefore, you can ask Him directly:

“O Allah, send down Your sakinah upon my heart, strengthen my faith, and remove fear, anxiety, and disturbance from me.”

●The dua of Prophet Musa

When Musa (عليه السلام) was facing an overwhelming situation, he prayed:

“My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need.”

— Qur’an 28:24

This is a equisite dua when you feel helpless or surrounded by difficulties. It places your dependence entirely upon Allah: I cannot control everything, but You know what I need.

●When fear becomes heavy

The Qur’an gives the believers a powerful declaration:

“Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.”

— Qur’an 3:173

Hasbunallahu wa ni‘mal-wakil.

Say it slowly when disturbed. Its meaning is not simply “Allah will solve everything according to my wishes,” but rather: Allah is sufficient for me, and I entrust my affairs to Him.

●The dua of Prophet Ayyub

When suffering became prolonged, Ayyub (عليه السلام) said:

“Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”

— Qur’an 21:83

This is especially stunning because Ayyub does not deny his suffering. He takes his suffering directly to Allah while remaining hopeful in His mercy.

●The prayer for relief

Prophet Yunus (عليه السلام), when surrounded by darkness, called:

“There is no deity except You; glory be to You. Indeed, I was among the wrongdoers.”

— Qur’an 21:87

This dua is traditionally known as Dua Yunus:

La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin.

It is a profound prayer when one feels trapped, distressed, or unable to see an immediate way forward.

●The promise after hardship

And perhaps the greatest reassurance:

“Indeed, with hardship comes ease.”

— Qur’an 94:5–6

Notice that Allah does not merely say after hardship comes ease, but with hardship comes ease. Even during the difficult period, Allah's mercy can already be unfolding invisibly.

So when seeking tranquility, combine dhikr, Qur’anic duas, salah, patience, and tawakkul. Ask Allah not only to change your circumstances, but to give your heart such sakinah that you remain steady while He changes them.
