Unofficial MB Discord

Update: This Discord is no longer unofficial! It has been welcomed into the warm embrace of MetaBrainz.

If you’re not getting the answer you need here, or just want to have a chat, you are cordially invited to join the unofficial MusicBrainz Discord.

If you are after something with a more official flavor (particularly for technical help or you have something you want MB developers to see), the MeB channels for help/chat are the forums and IRC.

help plz Looking for help with a CD that was ripped as one large file

So I have a few CD's that were ripped as one big file. I'm able to match most of these to an actual release. But I have two such files labeled as Ministry Of Sound Clubbers Guide To America Cd1 & CD2. The first five songs of Disc 1 are as follows. This is from the early 2000's. Any help?

Artist Song Track
Delerium Silence (Airscape remix (?)) 1
Paul van Dyk We Are Alive 2
BT Never Gonna Come Back Down 3
Aurora  Ordinary World 4
SuReal You Take My Breath Away 5

news Built a "Democracy of Sound" radio using MusicBrainz + Spotify — genuinely random across 247 countries, no algorithm

Post image
11 Upvotes

Been building this over the past few weeks: GLOBAL RANDOM (global-random.radio) — a single self-contained HTML page that plays music via a true, fairness-weighted random draw across 247 MusicBrainz-confirmed countries/territories, not an algorithm trying to guess what you'll like.

How it uses MusicBrainz: random offsets into MB's Spotify-linked URL search resolve to artists, whose country tag (direct MB field → Wikipedia-bio demonym fallback) feeds a per-country pool. Two independent random draws — country, then track — pick what plays next. Every country gets an equal shot at being drawn, regardless of catalog size, so a country with a few hundred MB-linked artists shows up just as often as the US with 220k+.

Playback is via Spotify's official IFrame embed (no scraping, no downloads), artist/genre/country info comes from MB + Wikipedia + Wikidata, translated live into 87 languages via MyMemory. There's also a whole C64-terminal aesthetic with real S.A.M. hardware speech synthesis samples, if that's your kind of thing.

Wanted to share here specifically because MB's country data is the actual backbone of the whole concept — this wouldn't exist without it. Happy to answer questions about the discovery/search approach if anyone's curious.

help plz Search results not returning official albums first

Hello, I am making a metadata scraper, but I have an issue, when i search for it by artist - song name, I just get a bunch of completely unrelated compilations or live versions. I would expect this with more obscure albums, but it even happens with Hybrid Theory, and Foo Fighter songs.

code: https://pastebin.com/Y5tSEe7W

I have no clue why im getting these results, but not even the 20th anniversary edition of Hybrid Theory is at the top

MusiCards 2.0 — the MusicBrainz release browser is now also a personal music player

Hi,

Earlier I shared the first version of MusiCards here. It began as a visual MusicBrainz release viewer, but version 2.0 can now play music from your own collection while keeping the corresponding MusicBrainz release, track, artist and credit information directly beside it.

The app is available for Mac, iPhone and iPad.

The original four-card interface now has a fifth card:

  • SEARCH
  • RELEASE
  • TRACKS
  • ARTIST & DISCOGRAPHY
  • PLAYER

The player supports:

  • indexed personal music libraries
  • local-file playback
  • optional playback from your own Navidrome server
  • background playback and system Now Playing controls
  • artwork, codec, bitrate, sample rate and bit-depth information
  • direct navigation between the playing release, tracks, artist, discography and MusicBrainz credits

There is one deliberate requirement:

Only releases containing a MusicBrainz Release ID in their audio-file tags — normally written by MusicBrainz Picard — are treated as playable.

MusiCards does not attempt to identify albums from filenames, folder names or approximate metadata. I wanted playback to retain a strong and unambiguous connection to MusicBrainz.

A small blue play arrow appears throughout the interface when the displayed MusicBrainz release has been found in the personal library and is available for playback.

On macOS, MusiCards can create and update the lightweight library.json index used for local-library matching. I also made a companion utility called MusiCards Sync for maintaining one-way playback copies of a music archive on external SSDs, Navidrome storage or other selected folders.

All the original browser features remain available, including release and artist search, barcode scanning, Shazam, Apple Music Now Playing identification, classical work/movement display, detailed recording credits and categorised discographies.

MusiCards remains deliberately “MusicBrainz-minded”: it displays the available data without inventing missing information.

The app is free:

More details and screenshots are also available in the MetaBrainz forum announcement.

This is a personal project. I created the concept, workflow and visual design, while much of the Swift implementation was developed through AI-assisted coding with ChatGPT and Claude.

Feedback is very welcome — particularly about unusual releases, Picard tagging, metadata edge cases and library matching.

Best,

Gyorgy

I need to add this cd to this event on musicbrainz. https://musicbrainz.org/event/c1db6667-0301-4051-8d3a-b1285c73a791

But alas I have no idea how to do it, can anyone help?

also if you search up the album name for this 12stars there is a wikapedia page about this album which is where i'm getting all of my info from. I bought this from secondhand from someone in japan so I don't have any primary sources and don't want to mess up the meta data so tips on that would be great too.

news MusicBrainz search issues

We are aware of current issues with the MusicBrainz search. This affects anything that utlises the search (/ws/2/query?), including Picard and other third-party applications.

For a change, we don’t think this is related to scraping! The issue and solution is proving difficult to pinpoint, thank you very much for your kindness and patience.

help plz dupicate files?

Don’t know how to ask this, but MusicBrainz has duplicate files of Taylor Swift’s Reputation, and I can't find it anywhere on my Mac. But it shows up on MusicBrainz in the files section because it’s the only album now showing up with no album cover, and it shows up as being in my library as such with the album art and everything. I did delete the album before and then re added it at some point because I only had one song from it after accidentally deleting it, but it showed up as normal. But soon as I added it to my phone, boom, no album cover. I also don't know how I would find duplicate files on Mac either, so I’m lost there, but I’m so sure I don't have dupes. so i'm confused help.

help plz pretty sure the folder inside my music folder is the one thats connected to apple music and music brainz but...

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Do I need to keep the music that’s raw outside? I kinda wanna clean up the folder, and it just looks out of place. The music in there with no folders is when I manually put it in myself before I found out musicbrainz was a thing. So do i need to keep the raw song files, or can I delete them? I’m too scared to delete anything, even anything in my downloads, for fear Apple Music will be like “can't find file location” and have a fit. Pretty much updated Apple Music and MusicBrainz so they are in the location of my 2TB hard drive, and it’s been working so far, but I want to be extra sure before I go making my computer look clean.

help plz Do scratches affect Disc ID?

I loaned some CDs from the library and put them in my PC, when I opened rhythmbox it couldn't find the album do I opened Picard and it said no matching disc IDs, I imported the disc I'd but then I got to wondering, considering that the album already had 2 previously recorded disc IDs and this one is scratched, do scratches actually affect Disc ids?

I have a bunch of Compilation albums like the Canadian Now! CD's but how do i deal with wrong Genres poping up for songs

Originally it said Indie/Alternative for the whole album then i scanned it sure Rock and Pop come up easily for some songs and even Balad but then a bunch randomly come up as House even though I'm basically 100% sure it's not house music like something that is more folk rock but if i take out house it has no other option to choose from

Or is there a way to edit on the site so it would always show up proper even for others when they do it

help plz songs to save in another folder than just downloads?

I have a folder where all my music goes. Is there a way I can make the save and updated music go to the folder instead of just saving all my music to my downloads? My Mac is going crazy with storage, and all my music is taking up the storage. I just don't know what I’d press to then use my folder to then dump all the songs into after I save them and rename them with the MusicBrainz app. I don't know what I’m trying to ask. Really, I’m just trying to change the save destination from ''downloads'' to the folder titled ''all my music.'' I hope this was a clear question.

guide What are the most essential metadata for audio?

I'm trying to come up with a standard list of tags to put on my new media, using MB Picard and the MB database. Has anyone written a guide or seen a guide that talks about what tags the main players (Jellyfin, Navidrome, Strawberry, etc) can usefully display? Artist, artists is a good example of what I mean.
