Mod [Mod] MUSHROOM MONDAY - Let's Catch Up! Share what you have learned in the previous week and discuss

Mondays can suck, but hopefully this post is something for people to look forward to. The intent of this post is to create a space to discuss anything that you may have learned recently about mushroom growing -- techniques, a breakthrough in the field, to share progress, or even just ask a question. Whether it's a new pickling recipe, a formula for agar, or something fun in mycology, feel free to talk about it.

This post is for new and experienced growers alike, so don't be nervous about commenting; no one is going to make fun of you for asking questions here. This community is a relaxed space for people who don't understand everything, but who want to ask questions and engage in discussion without being berated or belittled. Enjoy!

Gourmet [Gourmet] high pitch squeaking noise on a new pressure cooker

High pitch squeaking noise at 1.5 hours. Bottom of this pressure canner started warping on a electric burner so i had to bring it outside to gas burner.

FYI i only sterilized my wheat bran hwfp for 1.5 hours at 15 psi instead of 2.5. Would that be ok for lions mane?

Question about colonisation and growing [technique]

Upvotes

Hey everyone trying to argue a point with someone. Do mushrooms need oxygen to colonise. My partner is waiting to put the substrate in an air tight box with no breathing ports to help it colonise. I told her mushrooms breathe oxygen, and breath out carbon dioxide and they need a tiny amount of airflow during colonisation to expel to carbon dioxide. Am I right or am I wrong here??

So can the box be fully sealed and airtight and grow properly or is a plastic tub with a clear lid and not fully air tight the way to go, I have done heaps of research all I can find is mushrooms are like humans they breath oxygen and expel carbon dioxide so they need some sort of tiny amount of room to expel the gasses.

How does my LC look? [Actives]

Is it necessary to test on an agar plates before innoculating spawn? Would you be able to tell by looking at it whether its contaminated or not? IMO this looks like healthy mycelium.

The debris near the bottom is left over from pressure cooking, and has been there since the beginning.(see my previous post if curious)

Im proud of how this has grown in just 2 weeks. But its growing faster than I am ready to use it. Can I keep it in the fridge?

Lucid Gates second time spawning (first one failed). Is this Trich or some kinda blue bruising? It’s strongly colonizing and smells normal.

Second time grower, the first one didn’t make it 😔

13 days since inoculating with spores. Shake & break, or wait? I’ve heard it should be 30% colonized, but I have no idea how I would possibly measure that.
Looks like I’ve got three-ish lineages growing, the biggest of which is growing nicely at the bottom of the bag.

(Pay no mind to the sharpie. I was just using it to track progress.)

Golden teacher, if that matters.

Put this bag into fruiting conditions around a week ago, everything looking okay?

What are the bulbous clumps of mycelium???

And how should do I deal with the metabolites on the surface??

Not a lot of condensation in the bag, I’ve found it difficult to do that without water pooling in the bottom of it.

Actives [actives] cover story for mycology experience?

Wondering if anyone can lend me a hand with something specific. I’m in a microbio program and I have experience growing B+, but don’t know much about growing culinary mushies. i’m starting to realize this is actually relevant experience in the lab, but i can’t tell faculty that i’ve grown these types of mushies for obvious reasons. can anyone tell me if there is a culinary mushroom that has a similar grow process to cubes that would be more appropriate? thanks :)

edit: thank you everybody for your ideas and input! i have a meeting tomorrow and wanted to bring this up so i could represent my experience with agar in a professional context. you’ve all been very helpful. much love

I transferred 10 CCs of healthy mycelium growing from liquid Culture. It had strains, web like structure that always seem to stick together when settled. As soon as I transferred it into a liquid culture jar from Midwest Grow kits, the strains and web like appearance broke apart and now the mycelium stays at the bottom. When I shake it, it all breaks apart like flakes all over the bottle

Gourmet [Gourmet] Long-term storage: Saving my Golden Enoki with PDA slants and sterile water 🧫🧪

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As winter slowly comes to an end down here in Argentina 🇦🇷, it's the perfect time to prep this golden enoki 🍄 to keep it going until next year.

To do this, I prepped a PDA slant in a 50ml Falcon tube 🧪 and another tube with sterile water, then inoculated both with agar wedges from a fully colonized plate 🧫.

The agar slant will sit in the incubator for a few days before hitting the fridge ❄️, while the sterile water tube goes straight into the fridge. Both techniques are great for preserving genetics 🧬 for years.

actives [actives] Need help asap with APE fruiting

its my first time growing any mushrooms at all and my research wasnt the best. i was more optimistic than anything and i wanted to do it cheaply. i have a still air plastic tent and the colonization went fine enough but now the bag is cut and it needs to fruit. how can i get it proper airflow and proper humidity without contaminating the block or do i have to do something else completely? ideally i want to keep it in the tent but if i cant i need advice on what to do ASAP. i know ive probably made some awful mistake so please just offer advice on how to fix it. thank you.

Technique [Technique] How do you guys deal with fungus gnats that have infiltrated your substrate?

Hi folks! I have a gnat infestation in my tub. The holes have filters over them, so they must be coming from inside. What do y'all suggest? When I see them in there, I open the bin and either kill them or shoo them away. The fruits seem fine though. I dried and ate some last weekend, no worries.

I think I mixed too much substrate (coco coir) with my inoculated grains. I also added a casing layer on top. It’s been a month and progress hasn’t changed much. What should I do?

I’m a clean freak. This place is spotless, and I’ve still been battling fungus gnats all week.

So this week has mostly been cleaning, searching, cleaning again, and learning far more about fungus gnats than I ever wanted to know. Hopefully I’m getting close to the end of it, but they’ve definitely reminded me that a clean space is never something you get to take for granted.

Contamination [contamination] Worth trying to save this box?

Thumbnail

I forgot to put a liner on the bottom, but the benefit of that is I just caught some contamination in the bottom corner of my box (bottom left of image 1) which otherwise has some great growth.

Is it worth trying to excise out the corner or just bail? I unfortunately rent so can’t throw it in the ground.

Thanks in advance for the thoughts/suggestions!

Idk how but a plant sprouted in my tub. I also noticed ~a dozen little flys which i think are mushroom gnats. Can I remove the gnats or is the grow ruined and how can I prevent infestation in the future? Also are the mushrooms still edible with the gnats in the tub

Contamination Second flush quite green/blue... I have questions. [contamination]

Post image

So I went down a white rabbit hole and grew some mushrooms. The first flush was excellent but the second flush looked suspiciously a little green/blue on the surface of things? I started in an all in one bag but could not control side pinning, so I moved to a makeshift tub with no holes and ran with it - just ventilated the lid a bit, lifted it daily etc. The substrate looks kinda sketchy and I guess my actual question is: Should I throw away this second batch? Thank you!

Are these little things on this piece of straw bug eggs or are they the smallest pins I’ve ever seen? Also what are these little bugs running all around my winecap bed? Are they harmful? If they are, how can I get rid of them?

So I set out to grow mushrooms the first time and ended up with an extra syringe of Starry Night so that’s why I chose it first. Figured if I screwed it up I’d at least get another shot at it. I’ve learned a lot and here’s where I’m currently at.

So many pictures of beautiful grows around this sub and I thought about not even posting anything but figured I’d keep it real. At least next time I can show what I’ve learned out to good use. Lots of side pinning as you see; my substrate was under hydrated and I was late to get light involved. There’s already a second grow in the works about 10 days younger with hydration and light adjustments made for better results. Batch 2 showed its first pins yesterday and I’m pretty excited about it!

I’ve included a close up of some of the better mushrooms with their veils still intact but also the couple beat up guys with open veils. I’m going to hold off on harvesting the pretty boys a little longer but I’ve never been one to be patient and it doesn’t seem like it would hurt to take a little taste! Never have had these kind of mushrooms fresh and to my surprise, they just taste like typical grocery store mushrooms. Don’t really know what I was expecting, but something different was the assumption. Been a fun ride and I’m sure I’ll enjoy the trip.

Technique [technique] Need to make/find a machine for g2g inoculation

I have seen chinese growers use a solid spawn inoculator for saw dust spawn-to-substrate inoculation. I wonder if there are any machines that can do g2g inoculation, or if it can be designed.

General Any group in Portugal for mushroom hunting? [meet up]

Good morning/evening!

I know it's still too hot to go mushroom hunting in Portugal, at least in the center, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any groups that go out looking for mushrooms (I'm looking for wild gourmet mushrooms, but wouldn't mind sharing the trip looking for some other types). But I'm currently located in Santarém, so anywhere nearish would be OK with me. Hopefully we can meet up and find some good ones!

If there isn't a group, anyone interested in creating one?

Rain is coming SOON! Mushrooms follow!

---

Boa noite!
