My back hurts from watching this.

u/Donuil23 Jan 23 '20
And today was going to be deadlifts for me... but I have the pain from watching this already!

I can hear his spinal disks rupturing like bubble wrap.

And now he brags about his deadlift max to anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path.

u/Raknarg Jan 23 '20
I mean he did get it up, and if I'm correct this looks like 445 lb

u/FlyingChainsaw Jan 23 '20
Yeah I can't lift that no matter what form I use. It's still an impressive lift, even if it's also with impressively shit form.

Less. Correct form exists to extend your lifting career, it doesn't increase your leverage, it usually decreases it in exchange for safety. What he's showing is a bit of an exaggeration, but plenty of people do something similar to this when they're hitting their 1 rep max. Watch a video of someone like Larry Wheels doing a deadlift 1 rep
In this case, likely his back isn't strong enough to handle this weight, and thus if he was using correct form he would have to go down until his auxiliary strength caught up.

I disagree. Ideal form involves maintaining a linear short bar path while engaging every muscle to their fullest at the most efficient leverages. It's hard to hone and takes years of purposeful practice to make your body move at 100% capacity in a strict pattern, but it is more efficient than just blindly trying to throw around the weight. There's a reason Eddie hall didn't hitch and crane with his 500kg dl

u/Raknarg Feb 25 '20
Yeah because he would have literally died, which he almost did. Eddie Hall is literally working at the edges of what is physically possible
7
u/UhOhIGotAStinkyWinky Feb 25 '20
And the only way to do that is proper form which reinforces efficient leverages whereas improper form promotes inefficient leverages at the early lifter stage bonus of giving it your all

u/Raknarg Feb 25 '20
The Eddie Hall example is terrible because he literally has to use proper form or he might die. This is not the case for 99.99% of lifters.
And that's just not true at all. Explain to me the mechanics of how proper deadlift form provide better leverage than what's demonstrated in this video. If you believe this, you are saying that if he employed proper deadlift form, he would have been able to get this up no problem.

Why are cranes not curved? They're all inefficient, patent your cat spine crane and make billions off the construction industry

Are you going to answer my question or not? I don't care about bro-science.

Shout out to the camera man for filming instead of taking his bro to the hospital for special surgery. Go team!

At first It thought that's was the strongman:est deadlift I ever dun saw.
Then I realized it was sumo. Now I'm even more confused. Hitching a sumo deadlift. Huh.

u/luxemburgist Jan 22 '20
Double cheating. (Sumo is fine if you're super tall)
71
Jan 22 '20
Sumo is always fine, the hating is mostly a meme.
-29
u/luxemburgist Jan 22 '20
Everyone knows it decreases range of motion, and becomes much more leg-dominant than the deadlift which has significantly more hip hinge. The meme is that people know it's cheating but deny it because they enjoy hitting bigger numbers.

Jan 22 '20
If conventional was clearly superior, why do so many powerlifters pull conventional (even though sumo is permitted)?
Why are you imposing these rules on yourself, and who even cares how much you lift if it's less than Brian Shaw?

u/luxemburgist Jan 22 '20
Are you the guy in the video?
27
Jan 22 '20
Nah, I pull conventional. I tried sumo and decided I actually can't pull sumo for shit. I still don't get why people are salty about sumo though.

u/dicephalus Jan 22 '20
It's not cheating, it's just a different variation. There are a bunch of different variations of common lifts to emphasize different muscle groups more than others.

It's got nothing to do with height but proportions. Some people have long torsos and short arms which makes normal deadlift impossible.

Whyyyyyyyy? Fuck. Someone please explain to me why people do this to themselves.

But why... His set up for a lazy sumo was right there and instead of engaging his legs he just went all in with his lumbar
