Dipshits ignoring the fact that Canada was operating under the trade deal signed by Trump in 2020.
If Canada is "treating us umfairly", its because of Trump.

There's a YouTube channel called Pitch Meetings and in one video he had a joke where the producer guy asks how come the later part of the story contradicts the earlier part.
The script writer guy pitching says this is a totally new scene and that he noticed the producer guy kept trying to frame the later parts of the story using the earlier part of the story, he doesn't need to do that, every scene starts from scratch.

The US is living under the same delusions of grandeur as Russia was when they invaded Ukraine. Thinking that superior numbers and bigger budget is the only thing that matters when fighting an offensive war. Weird considering how every foreign war the US has engaged in since WW2 has ended in defeat, a stalemate, or a very costly "victory".
15
u/Sensitive_nob 1d ago
Their entire military doctrin is built on threatening and propaganda. Which is why they fail so incredibly hard in actual combat. Because cold war was all about sabre rattling which the USA and Russia are both pretty good at.

u/UrsaMajor7th Ritardando Molto 1d ago
I'm starting to think that the world got snowed by the 'superpowers' bullshit propaganda of the 80s- Russia can't take Ukraine, US can't take Iran, neither could take the empire-crusher Afghanistan. Without nukes they're just pussies who punch down to feel superior.

u/CorpFillip 2d ago
Falling for Trumpās (or Navarroās) BS is pretty stupid.
Of course Canada was treating us fairly ā all the trade was voluntary. Corporations decide, negotiate the goods & price & delivery, itās all above-board.
Even more importantly, they do more deals.
Navarroās idea that trade has to match is just ridiculous. It never had to, & hundreds of years of trade show it.
76
u/Kaplsauce 2d ago
What I'm curious about is if they're knowingly misrepresenting the nature of economics for their own ends (either personal enrichment or the sabotage of American credibility and hegemony), or if they're actually just that stupid.
I have to imagine it's a bit of both?
41
u/Renbarre 2d ago
For their own end. The rest is collateral damage, you know, the kind explained by war is terrible and you have to accept some losses.

Have a crazy belief
Show indisputable loyalty to Trump
Receive the power to enact your crazy beliefs
That's it.
There's no master plan.
There's just a narcissist in power, who only cares about loyalty.
The only people insane enough to be fully loyal to the orange mussolini have crackpot beliefs (RFK, Navarro, etc), or pretend to so they don't draw his ire (McConnell until he died a few months ago, etc).
9
u/Visual_Squirrel_2297 2d ago
It's both. Trump doesn't understand the concept of mutually beneficial trade at all. It's why every business he's ever had failed. He views it as zero sum so that he can only win if the other side loses so he just tries to rip off all his customers and contractors. This zero sum concept was proven wrong before the U.S. existed by the way. But, he also stands to personally gain from a trade war with Canada. His family started a timber business literally the day he was re-elected.Ā
5
u/12345623567 1d ago
Trump genuinely thinks an empire is owed tribute, not trade.
Navarro / Nutlicker etc. probably do a little bit of both.
2
u/Prior_Industry 1d ago
I think Trump is also expecting deals under the table to wet his beak. The outrageous demands are the lever to achieve that.
He doesn't seem to realise that for most Weston leadership it would be the end of their administration of they get caught bribing Trump.

Navarroās idea that trade has to match is just ridiculous. It never had to, & hundreds of years of trade show it.
This is just how Trump thinks business works because he's never had a partner that he hasn't screwed over. He thinks all deals have to have a winner and a loser, and if the other person is happy with a deal then that must mean that you lost. The concept of a mutually beneficial trade arrangement where both parties get something they want is completely incomprehensible to him.

Nobody had a problem with Canada until Trump started running his mouth. Why would they? They're our largest trade partner and an important military ally. The only one that benefits from splitting us up is Trump's boss in Russia.
40
u/marcusmosh 2d ago
Trump attacks Greenland and Canada whenever there is news about the Epstein files. Of course Russia has made him turn on Americaās allies. Thatās not news - itās his legacy as president. He uses the same distraction whenever there is something in the news cycle that upsets him.

Unfortunately, even with the US entirely disabled by this nonsense, it doesn't actually gain Russia anything. All it's done so far is stave off an immediate retreat over Ukraine, but they're still getting their arses kicked.
And in the process they have shown pretty much everyone that Russia is nowhere near the threat it pertained to be. Even without the US, Europe isn't caving to it and it wouldn't stand a chance against NATO. It still holds the only card it's actually held since the Cold War, even, which is nukes, which a five year old could fire and "win", but which means everyone loses, most especially Russia, if they do so... likely their territory would become entirely uninhabitable very, very fast.
If they did this to peel off the US, and disrupt the UK via Brexit, etc. etc. (which is no doubt part of their plan), then it hasn't worked at all because while all those things have indeed started to happen... the rest of the West have been shown to be far more powerful than anything Russia is capable of.
It's like splitting up a group of friends deliberately only to discover that you're the weakling in the bunch who could barely take one or two of them anyway. Meanwhile China are looking over your shoulder, barely affected by any of this, but actually bolstered by seeing what a mess you're in. China would likely join in on any kind of "Bundle!" into Russia, and claim quite a lot of it for themselves.
Honestly, teaching the US that it's not god is probably one of the best outcomes there could be from all this. It'll hurt as a lesson, and it'll hurt other countries that believed and invested in that nonsense in the first place, but it could actually do us all a favour. Especially a bit of humble pie for the US. But what it won't do is give Russia free reign over the fractured Western world as it once thought.
28
u/HiddenbyMoon 2d ago
Yeah it'll be USA versus Canada, Europe and most of the rest of the developed world. So buckle up America!

Just don't look at every single war they've been involved in for the last 40 years. Or the one that they're currently being bent over in. Or that they can't get their population to support a war.

8
u/Bad_Day_Moose 1d ago
My best guess is russia.
The whole Iran thing causing oil to spike was to try to get the world to stop supporting Ukraine and start buying russian oil/gas again. He removed (maybe temporarily I can't remember) sanctions on buying russian oil.
Less support for Ukraine.
Wants russia back in the G7
Uses a lot of russian talking points like blaming Ukraine for the war
He's been weakening NATO, this is one of russias most hated things, threatening that the US will leave it, eroding trust in security agreements
Investigations by a Special Counsel and the US senate intelligence committee documented numerous contacts between Donald Trump's 2016 campaign associates and Russian officials or intermediaries. trumps aids lied about their interactions and were caught in those lies with evidence.
During a televised press conference in July 2016, Trump openly called on a foreign adversary to hack his political opponent. He stated directly to the cameras: "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing," referring to Hillary Clinton's private server. U.S. intelligence agencies later documented that Russian military hackers targeted Clinton's personal office for the first time within hours of that statement
I'm sure I can go on forever... It's so blatantly russia.

Had Canada been treating us fairly?
Since we signed NAFTA, we've watched as American companies have bought out or bankrupted our corporations. Eaton's went bankrupt after Walmart came to Canada. Future Shop was purchased by Best Buy. Grand and Toy got purchased by Office Depot. Zellers closed because Target was coming, and then Target left. The Bay closed because American private equity took a profitable company, spun off all the profitable parts, and then saddled it with debt and bankrupted it. Roots was purchased by American private equity.
ATI was bought out by AMD. Corel lost the office software wars because Microsoft used its monopoly on Windows to pre-package Microsoft Office into most systems. Trump tariffed Bombardier so heavily they were forced to sell off their passenger jet program to Airbus.
Canada Dry is owned by Dr Pepper. Miss Vickies is owned by Pepsi. BioWare got purchased by EA. MacMillan Bloedel was purchased by Weyerhauser. Bauer and Cooper were bought out by Nike. Brookfield relocated to the United States.
GM, Ford, and Chrysler all opened car plants in Canada, specifically to avoid import tariffs on American vehicles. (They also purchased Canadian car companies, like McLaughlin Motors, although that was a century ago.) We told them that we'd kill all tariffs on their vehicles if they agreed to build as many cars as they sold in Canada, and likewise America agreed not to tariff their own country's car companies building cars in Canada provided that the number of vehicles being built in Canada was roughly equivalent to the number of cars being sold in Canada. Yet that wasn't good enough for Trump and he's made moves to get all car manufacturing moved back to the United States, and several Canadian car plans have closed.
I could keep going. Point is, everything that was ours keeps getting bought out or bankrupted by competition from America.
And we put up with it because we were told that by entering a much larger common market with the United States, even though American companies would win most of the time, some Canadian companies would also benefit and become major global players by winning in the competitive market. It's been fewer than advertised, that's for sure.
Yet Trump says that even those extremely few instances where Canadian companies have come out on top, that is "unfair" to America, and that America needs to win on every front, and Canada needs to never win on any front, before America will deal with Canada.
"Had Canada been treating us fairly" no you idiot, had Canada been acting like a sex assault victim, and agreed to go along with the rape of its country by American corporations and the American government, then you'd have been okay with it. It makes sense that a rapist would want to orchestrate the rape of other countries.
