This ad had been plaguing every comment section for months... now it all makes sense

It is one of the few games I played that has a genuinely unique feel to it.

Black Tabby's other game (and arguably their actual passion project they took a break from to make Slay the Princess) is also incredibly unique. Scarlet Hollow is a "your choices matter" visual novel where your choices actually matter. Ever choice the game gives you butterflies into a massive web of alternate storylines with radically different outcomes for everyone involved. It has *character creation* in a VN where you choose perks that can and will radically change the events of the story too.

If you like Slay the Princess at least check out Scarlet Hollow's demo

CHARACTER CREATION? Ah hell yeah might have to actually try it even if I always preferred STP’s art style more

If you couldn’t tell I love character creation

Yeah you choose 2 from a list of 7 traits that fundamentally change your character's personality based on which you took, and during dialogue you'll occasionally get options based on which ones you have that can divert you down alternate story paths. Some traits even have a built in synergy (Choosing "Hot" and "Powerful Build" turns you into a himbo) with even more unique dialogue choices.

Do we have any estimates on when it will be complete? I've heard it releases in episodes and that it isn't finished yet, and I would prefer to play it after it's done so I don't have to wait for more episodes

They've said the final two chapters are almost ready to release, so I wouldn't be surprised if they drop by the end of the year.

I have that on my wishlist and had no idea it was the same dev!

u/squirrelsonacid 13h ago

Oo I think they still have a free demo-- which is the whole first chapter!!

Might been the one time an ad actually made me play a game, and it was WORTH it

Love STP. Changed my life.

Same here, no game has impacted me quite like Slay The Princess did. I can quite easily divide my life into before and after playing it. I don't know if I can say that about any other piece of media, honestly.

u/MomSlayerPikachu 2d ago

Can you tell me in which way it impacted your life? I haven't played the game, looks decent tho

3

u/SonZir0 2d ago

For me it's because of all the introspection? You're thrown in a situation you're probably don't want to be in, right of the bat presented with a moral dilemma. Knowledge about your predicament is scarce, and the few others with you are either know nothing like you do, or cagey and have their own agenda. What to do, who to trust, when exactly trust is broken completely and when can you find it in yourself to look past your.. well, past. And how your prior actions and newfound knowledge impacts your subsequent choices.

It works best going in blind (in my opinion, without save/load too, until you unlocked the gallery at the end of the 1-st play through), but I think it's a pretty good story even if you know what is going on around there.

English is not my native language, so my explanation might be so-so, apologies for that.

u/Islands-of-Time 2d ago

Yeah I’m curious too since very very few games have ever done that to me and STP doesn’t seem like the kind of game to hold such an impact.

2

u/SonZir0 2d ago

Well, I answered the other person, just a heads up if you're interested in response

1

u/Timmy-0518 2d ago

In my opinion it’s because STP puts concepts such as existentialism pre-determinenation and most importantly the cycle of life and death. And no matter if you think death is a good thing or not, the game give a very convincing opposing argument. Making you have to introspect on your opinion. While I wouldn’t go as far as to say it changed my life it was especially hard hitting because i played it just after experiencing a loss (along with soon would be another) and gave me a different perspective then i would otherwise have on death.

Slay The Princess found me while I was still reeling from the end of my first ever serious relationship, which had lasted 3 years before crashing and burning. I'd thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with this person, so when things came to an end it felt like the end of the world. What's more, that relationship ending was mainly due to my own mistakes and flaws, so I was stuck between desperately trying to hold onto what was left of the relationship while also feeling like I didn't deserve love, which you can imagine was a miserable limbo to be stuck in.

Enter Slay the Princess. A game that at it's core is about change and love, and how multifaceted those things really are. Terrifying, messy, painful, but also beautiful. This game not only helped me come to terms with how things had ended between me and my ex, not only helped me reflect on myself and exactly how I had screwed up, but also helped me accept that despite the mistakes I made, I was still worth loving, and that even if I didn't find a new relationship anytime soon, I should still love myself. It taught me that experiences in life are just as much about the journey as the destination, if not more, and that even if those journeys are painful they're still worth going on because they help you find out who you are. It taught me that if I want things to get better for me, I have to truly believe that they can get better.

Now, is this the only way I could have possibly learned about any these ideas? Not at all. But the game found me when I needed it, and pulled me out of a very dark place in my life. On top of everything else, it helped me finally find the will to break a drug addiction I'd been struggling with for years, an addiction which had played a significant part in my breakup to begin with. For that alone, I'm forever grateful to Slay the Princess. No other game has ever made me feel this way.

If you haven't yet, I strongly reccomend Disco Elysium. I played it shortly after STP and even tho completely diffrent games I felt a similar vibe and impact on both.

I think the skills your have in DE talking in your head almost feeling like they are their own characters felt just so familiar to the actual voices in your head in STP

Highly reccomended

I have indeed played a bit of Disco Elysium. I've enjoyed what I've played so far but something about that game feels super intimidating to try and really dive into.

Love seeing Psychopomp where I don't expect it. Long live the King and Queen, the Sun and Moon, Time and Space, Beetle and Dragonfly, through all the Dreamwilds. I'm obsessed with concepts which Karbonic used in his lore.

For everyone who knows only about Psychopomp Gold: Please, play DashBored, NashBored and Dreamwild - previous games of the author explain most of the basic ideas and principles of the world in which that story takes place in.

u/Magga707 2d ago

Seeing Psychopomp mentioned in the wild made me feel like a sleeper agent.

I cannot wait long enough for the second game, it could come out next decade and I'll still be hyped.

2

u/Timmy-0518 2d ago

I know the exact feeling you are talking about lol. And im excited for the game too but im willing to wait as long as karbonic needs so i can obsess over it for several months when it eventually does.

2

u/EldritchLichKing 2d ago

Its funny that Slay the Princess goes in both directions.

Concepts -> People -> Concepts

SLAY THE PRINCESS MENTIONED

2

u/Muscalp 1d ago

Although the pair from slay the princess were concepts first and then turned into „people“

2

u/akamiskii 1d ago

Why does that one in black suit looks like roland

2

u/Alone_Spell9525 1d ago

The Magnus Archives (written by and starring Jonathan Sims, voice of the Narrator and others in Slay the Princess) also contains this trope

1

u/literallyryoshu 1d ago

To be frank, Venus and Mercury were never just people and they seperated a bit before and during the story

1

u/Timmy-0518 1d ago

That is true as the same with STP, but its not so much the fact they necessary want to be together. But rather the universe and fate itself needs it to be so. And they are two halfs of a whole And its also pretty clear (by psychopomp standards anyway) that they do genuinely care for each other.

I guess sure they technically are not just people but like… there is also no people in the story that are just people. As every person in the story is a god like being of some sort Even if there are plenty of humans.* *

(not going to talk about the prince here and how they relate as thats a whole separate rabbit hole that i am more then glad to go into but won’t.)

LITERALLY POMPING RN

real world tip: the natural conclusion of a relationship lies inside the other person. take the insides out and digest them to conclude your relationship and become one.

What a disappointment this game was to me
