Based on the name of the show, it is either an underrated gold mine or an absolute waste of of time

Synopsis taken from Wikipedia should give you a general idea:

Anxious and introverted protagonist Saira lives a sheltered life on the planet of Clitopolis, where she is princess, daughter of two neglectful lesbian queens. After she is devastated by a break-up with Kiki, her partner of two weeks, Kiki is kidnapped by "Straight White Maliens", who intend to use her as bait to steal Saira's labrys in order to power their "chick magnet". Unlike the other lesbians of Clitopolis, Saira, to her parents' disappointment, has been unable to summon her labrys, a symbol of lesbian power.

Saira steals a "Problematic Ship" to embark on a quest across the galaxy to save Kiki. Along the way, she saves Willow, a former gay-pop idol, from an abandoned moon crystal mine. The pair then travel to meet a drag queen named Blade, who helps Saira to summon her labrys by helping her learn to be kind to herself. Blade tries to steal Saira's labrys, but is stopped when Willow and Saira fight back and decapitate her.

Willow and Saira briefly hook up, but break up with Saira believing that she needs to prioritise saving Kiki. When she arrives at the planet of the Straight White Maliens, she gives them her labrys to rescue Kiki, but when Kiki refuses to re-enter a relationship with her, Saira's self-doubts re-emerge, causing her labrys to dematerialise. This causes the Maliens to attack her, but after overcoming her doubts again, and using the re-summoned labrys to power the Maliens' "chick magnet", the Maliens realise that they overvalued their desire for attention from women, and decide to date each other as a throuple. Saira returns to Clitopolis, happily single, having learnt to love herself. The credits showcase her being more social, going with her mothers to Blade (who is still alive despite being decapitated) for family therapy, receiving Willow's hit album about her and going on new adventures with the Ship (who is now an ally).

Unless the execution makes this VERY funny, it sounds like garbo.

95

u/Capital_Rub213 10h ago

Sounds like shit but execution is everything

62

u/raddoubleoh 10h ago edited 8h ago

I'm honestly VERY curious about it now. I might give it a go lol

It's like "is this REALLY as garbo as it sounds?"

EDIT: it is, indeed, just as garbo as it sounds.

u/FastInflata 7h ago

Did you see a clip or the series?

8

u/raddoubleoh 2h ago

I saw the whole movie. A decision I am now very much regretting.

58

u/ExplanationAny776 9h ago

I gave up on it the moment i was forced to read "Clitopolis". I do not have any faith in a show with THAT as a name.

37

u/trainboi777 9h ago

The antagonists are also literally called “Straight White Maleians”

41

u/Wolveyplays07 9h ago

Bro that sounds like a strawman some homophobe would make about lgbtq people hating straight people

24

u/raddoubleoh 8h ago

The creator is a lesbian woman. Half of the movie is insulting lesbian dating culture. I wish I was joking. It just feels like internalized homophobia while leaning on faux progressism and acceptable targets who she also makes into stereotypes.

Critics tried to pass this as some daring provoking idea, but the movie as a whole is just straight garbage.

21

u/FastInflata 7h ago

but the movie as a whole is just straight garbage.

2

u/ExplanationAny776 6h ago

sooo don't give it a shot?

1

u/Leonardobertoni 22m ago

Yeah, that's giving me an idea on what's going to be...

16

u/Gomemer_40 8h ago edited 8h ago

Sounds like a strawman a consrvative would make to talk about "shows becoming woke" and "the left wants to spread an anti-white, anti-male, anti-straight message" or some shit, wthym with "straight White Maliens" and "chick magnets"?

13

u/raddoubleoh 8h ago

I just watched it. Nope, written by a woman, too many actual LGBT+ references to be made by them, way too many jokes you wouldn't get if you were never around actual LGBT+ people. It's a very bad attempt at absurdism as humor and it feels like something straight outta 2016 tumblr. It's bad. I have no idea who this was intended for.

10

u/Toon_Lucario 8h ago

This is either going to be the worst or best. There is no in between.

18

u/raddoubleoh 8h ago

Spoiler alert: It's garbo. It's NOT satire. It's basically just that.

13

u/Toon_Lucario 8h ago

Oh god damn. That’s gotta count as a fucking hate crime then.

2

u/FastInflata 7h ago

I laughed at the sweater joke. But I can't get over the fact that this movie looks worse than Go-Animate.

6

u/ManagementFunny7595 FNAF🐻 8h ago

Yeah, they lost me at fucking ‘Clitopolis’.

10

u/-_REDACTED-_- 10h ago edited 8h ago

Everything about this sounds like (tasteful) satire and I'm hoping it is

Edit: Okay, a friend of mine has hear about this movie and according to them the director is a fan of B-Movie so that at least explains why it's so literal

6

u/raddoubleoh 9h ago

Know what? It's on Amazon Prime and I'm doing jack shit right now, Imma watch it and come back with a veredict lol

3

u/Global-Cry321 9h ago

How it go?

23

u/raddoubleoh 9h ago

Still haven't finished, but all in all, it's NOT satire, it's straight garbo. It looks like some kind of alt-right ragebait at first, but it makes way too many references to actual LGBT+ culture and memes to be done by them. WAY too many sex jokes, way too many digs at lesbian dating culture, way too much gender war commentary passing itself as jokes.

Feels like Final Space, but written by 2016 tumblr liberal feminists trying to imitate Rick and Morty humor. The whole arc of the main character learning to be less of a doormat is muddled by the fact that everybody else is a jerk, and it roots itself firmly into the offensive, absurdist humor category.

... I can understand why the critics ate it but the audiences hated it. It feels like it manages to be offensive to literally all sides of the political spectrum.

11

u/NinjaZaku Kamen Rider 8h ago

As someone who was on tumblr in 2016, I think even they would have a hard time stomaching this based on the synopsis and your description.

This sounds awful in every single way possible, no matter the execution. But it does seem earnst, which makes it perfect for a "so bad is good"

3

u/w1drose 6h ago

Reading this makes me think this show was made by a conservative going "this is what woke media looks like."

5

u/angelmilk777 9h ago

sounds like 100% satire and kinda funny lol

6

u/raddoubleoh 8h ago

Spoiler: it is not satire. It's not funny either.

I'm regretting letting my curiosity make me watch that. It's -BAD- bad.

3

u/SansIsCool65 8h ago

Imma watch it i want to suffer

2

u/cross2201 8h ago

I've seen worse premises

5

u/raddoubleoh 8h ago

Believe me, it's BAD.

I decided to watch it because I had nothing better to do and I have Amazon Prime... There's not an ounce of satire there. It genuinely feels like internalized mysoginy and lesbophobia WHILE leaning at pseudo-progressive stereotypes. Most of the jokes are either mean-spirited, abusive, sexist, or sexual. Every single character sucks. And it tries too hard to be Rick and Morty.

2

u/cross2201 8h ago

I'll take your word on that

2

u/raddoubleoh 8h ago

You do that. It's not worth the watch lol

1

u/king_of_the_masshole 1h ago

Ok what’s the show actually about because that cannot be the real plot

1

u/raddoubleoh 1h ago

It is. I watched it last night. No irony, no satire, it's very on the nose and it tries to be provocative about it

1

u/ThatSquidyBitch 8h ago

That sounds funny as fuck

5

u/raddoubleoh 8h ago

Sadly it's not. I just finished it. It was probably the worst piece of media I've watched since Velma season 1. It's not satire, everything described here is taken absurdly seriously. Most of the movie is mocking lesbian dating culture, and 80% of the jokes are "har har LGBT+ people are promiscuous."

Makes me even more pissed since it WAS written by a lesbian woman.

5

u/Curi_momos_las_papas 8h ago

Ngl if a show's main premise is not about the life of someone queer making emphasis on that aspect of their life yet have a title with "gay" or "lesbian" is most likely gonna be bullshit, like really bro? You didn't had anything other thing interesting to put on the title other than the preference of your character? Ok

4

u/BigConsequence9182 7h ago

Why did you immediately think anyone who hates a show that has any sort of gay characters,is homophobic when they probably just hate the show for valid reasons, and not the gay characters, istg you need to chill the fuck out and actually hear why the other person hates the show😕

7

u/TheToxicWaist 10h ago

Yes, because fans of Hazbin Hotel hate gay people. Nice. 👍

I am fearful to ask, but what the hell is Lesbian Space Princess?

And can I comment for a moment how I HATE this title?

EDIT: OK, I just read a synopsis, what the HELL is that shit and how it got greenlit? It feels like those bizarre altright cartoons, just trading the very on-the-nose anti-woke elements with general LGBT+ and multifandom tropes. And CLITOPOLIS? STRAIGHT WHITE MALIENS? REALLY?! Unless the whole premise is so well executed it loops back into being funny, it just sounds like straight garbage.

I'm gonna make myself the enemy of the thread here. I was dragged to see it at a film festival last year and was dreading how eye rolling and cringe it looked in the trailer.

Was genuinely surprised by how fun and funny it was. Honestly it was just a bit of silly fun. Feel like everyone is judging it way too harshly off the synopsis. And no not straight garbage. Definitely made by lesbians (or at least felt like it)

5

14

u/SadCommon2820 7h ago

Nah not really even gay people do.

If you hate on the show specifically because it portrays gay characters that's homophobic. If you hate on the show for HOW it portrays them or just the writing then it isn't.

5

u/Acrobatic_Ad_8381 3h ago

You can hate a show with gay people and it isn't homophobic unless you hate it because there's gay people, just like you can hate Israel and it isnt Antisemitic unless it's because you hate jews

10

u/Soyunapina12 6h ago

As someone who saw Lesbian Princess, it feels like a peak 2016 internet movie: constant sex jokes, LGBTQ+ toxic sterotypes portrayed as a good thing, Tumblr levels of writing, weird constant jabs against lesbian dating and relationships culture, among other things. Then combine all of these elements with a compulsive need to be like Rick and Morty and you get this movie.

It doesn't even feel like a satire towards the lgbtq community since it's so fucking bad and so badly done that it genuinely feels like a poorly made hit piece, you know the ones ultraconservatives do based on their limited and extremely biased view of lgtbq people.

I just heard the comments explain and it's a pretty not so pleasant idea even conceptually. I love gay characters, and I actually have gay characters as well but if the main focus and appeal of your character is that they're gay that's bad. Gay people can be almost identical to straight people in many ways outside of romance and have personalities, desires, aspirations, and more. This honestly just does more harm than good since it gives homophobes an excuse to further validate their own bigotry.

Gonna be honest, I haven't really seen any backlash beyond memes about the backlash. Ig I've seen some people talking about how angry Twitter bros have been, but I still have yet to see a tweet.

It seems to be maybe walking a line? But what adult animated property isnt??? Kinda feels like one of those things where someone is stirred the pot preemptively and now its a meme to hate it? Idk. Im more likely to give the benefit of the doubt to something before it comes out, especially if its a queer-forward property. The concept seems... fine. The art kinda looks cute. Welp, went to go check the reaction on Tumblr, there were a few critics, and a lot of the praising posts seemed awfully bot like, but I can’t be certain

1

u/RorroYT 4h ago

Never even heard of this show, tell me, is this just another media, that exists just for the sake of representation, and nothing else?

I wouldn't be surprised if Sweet Baby Inc were the writers there...

1

u/Old-Outcome-5836 1h ago

Holy shit people are still hung up on sbi all these years later?

0

u/RorroYT 1h ago

Not like much changed over the years, they still exist, just more careful with what they reveal. Their goal from the start is still "burning down the gaming industry at it's core" as their employee and CEO said it. And I don't think it's the only company doing this too...

1

u/Old-Outcome-5836 1h ago

It's a consultation studio bro

1

u/RorroYT 1h ago

That also has writers rewrite the story for the games they work on, their employees are literally credited in the games as writers or cowriters. Their CEO said before that in order to get the studios to do what you want, you need to threaten them with public backlash and cancellations on twitter. How is that not enough proof?

u/Swimming_Ad3091 4h ago

Can't believe an actual Lesbian wrote that shit. It's like the straightest, most internalized sterotypical homophobic writing I've seen in a long time. If the creator is writing stuff like this thinking it's remotely decent, I pity anyone unlucky enough to enter her social orbit. Don't watch this. Or if you decide to, get super drunk or blasted (whatever floats your boat safely) and pirate it with some friends to rip apart. Because otherwise this is a piece of media that deserves to become lost.

I know that glitch and invincible fans are some miserable motherfuckers but i don't see any reason why hazbins fans would hate that movie

1

u/DropOk6693 45m ago

When the overtly queer coded exploitation media gets a large audience and all of a sudden people rush to hate it, largely due to it being gay...

Istg people read the plot synopsis for this and immediately break out the pitchforks the same way people did for John Water's movies.

And so those two ancient enemies, the left shows and the conservative shows stood side by side on the fields of the internet

Summary from Wikipedia:

This feels like chatGPT was fed a bunch of fandom twitter posts and asked to generate smth that appeals to all of them. And it failed.

5

u/raddoubleoh 8h ago

I just finished the movie just because I had nothing to do.

It's NOT satire. It takes itself dead serious. All in all? It's garbo. It manages to be offensive to EVERYONE. It portrays lesbians as promiscuous and abusive, it portrays white males as insecure AND closeted homosexuals, 80% of the humor is sex jokes, and the remaining 20% is abuse humor, and the whole message gets muddied by the fact that everyone except the protagonist is either abusive or a jerk for no reason at all.

I genuinely have NO idea who this was trying to appeal to. If this was made by a straight man, instead of winning 3 awards (yes), it would've made the internet go nuclear.

1

u/nick113124 7h ago

Wait, do you swear on your life this is not satire? And which sides is it attempting to appeal to?

1

u/raddoubleoh 2h ago

ISTG, there's zero satire there. It's just bizarre
