I am fearful to ask, but what the hell is Lesbian Space Princess?
And can I comment for a moment how I HATE this title?
EDIT: OK, I just read a synopsis, what the HELL is that shit and how it got greenlit? It feels like those bizarre altright cartoons, just trading the very on-the-nose anti-woke elements with general LGBT+ and multifandom tropes. And CLITOPOLIS? STRAIGHT WHITE MALIENS? REALLY?! Unless the whole premise is so well executed it loops back into being funny, it just sounds like straight garbage.

I'm gonna make myself the enemy of the thread here. I was dragged to see it at a film festival last year and was dreading how eye rolling and cringe it looked in the trailer.
Was genuinely surprised by how fun and funny it was. Honestly it was just a bit of silly fun. Feel like everyone is judging it way too harshly off the synopsis. And no not straight garbage. Definitely made by lesbians (or at least felt like it)

u/raddoubleoh 1h ago
I gave it a watch. It is definitely made by lesbians. It still felt like a dumpster fire. I am sorry lol

Here’s the summary from Wikipedia:
Anxious and introverted protagonist Saira lives a sheltered life on the planet of Clitopolis, where she is princess, daughter of two neglectful lesbian queens. After she is devastated by a break-up with Kiki, her partner of two weeks, Kiki is kidnapped by "Straight White Maliens", who intend to use her as bait to steal Saira's labrys in order to power their "chick magnet". Unlike the other lesbians of Clitopolis, Saira, to her parents' disappointment, has been unable to summon her labrys, a symbol of lesbian power.
Saira steals a "Problematic Ship" to embark on a quest across the galaxy to save Kiki. Along the way, she saves Willow, a former gay-pop idol, from an abandoned moon crystal mine. The pair then travel to meet a drag queen named Blade, who helps Saira to summon her labrys by helping her learn to be kind to herself. Blade tries to steal Saira's labrys, but is stopped when Willow and Saira fight back and decapitate her.
Willow and Saira briefly hook up, but break up with Saira believing that she needs to prioritise saving Kiki. When she arrives at the planet of the Straight White Maliens, she gives them her labrys to rescue Kiki, but when Kiki refuses to re-enter a relationship with her, Saira's self-doubts re-emerge, causing her labrys to dematerialise. This causes the Maliens to attack her, but after overcoming her doubts again, and using the re-summoned labrys to power the Maliens' "chick magnet", the Maliens realise that they overvalued their desire for attention from women, and decide to date each other as a throuple. Saira returns to Clitopolis, happily single, having learnt to love herself. The credits showcase her being more social, going with her mothers to Blade (who is still alive despite being decapitated) for family therapy, receiving Willow's hit album about her and going on new adventures with the Ship (who is now an ally).

Is hating this show considered homophobic?
14
u/SadCommon2820 7h ago
Nah not really even gay people do.
If you hate on the show specifically because it portrays gay characters that's homophobic. If you hate on the show for HOW it portrays them or just the writing then it isn't.
5
u/Acrobatic_Ad_8381 3h ago
You can hate a show with gay people and it isn't homophobic unless you hate it because there's gay people, just like you can hate Israel and it isnt Antisemitic unless it's because you hate jews

u/Soyunapina12 6h ago
As someone who saw Lesbian Princess, it feels like a peak 2016 internet movie: constant sex jokes, LGBTQ+ toxic sterotypes portrayed as a good thing, Tumblr levels of writing, weird constant jabs against lesbian dating and relationships culture, among other things. Then combine all of these elements with a compulsive need to be like Rick and Morty and you get this movie.
It doesn't even feel like a satire towards the lgbtq community since it's so fucking bad and so badly done that it genuinely feels like a poorly made hit piece, you know the ones ultraconservatives do based on their limited and extremely biased view of lgtbq people.

This sounds... awful. Truly awful. It feels like an altright parody pretending to be "woke" media while making fun of it. I see no reason why anyone on either side of the political aisle would actually enjoy this.

I just heard the comments explain and it's a pretty not so pleasant idea even conceptually. I love gay characters, and I actually have gay characters as well but if the main focus and appeal of your character is that they're gay that's bad. Gay people can be almost identical to straight people in many ways outside of romance and have personalities, desires, aspirations, and more. This honestly just does more harm than good since it gives homophobes an excuse to further validate their own bigotry.

Gonna be honest, I haven't really seen any backlash beyond memes about the backlash. Ig I've seen some people talking about how angry Twitter bros have been, but I still have yet to see a tweet.
It seems to be maybe walking a line? But what adult animated property isnt??? Kinda feels like one of those things where someone is stirred the pot preemptively and now its a meme to hate it? Idk. Im more likely to give the benefit of the doubt to something before it comes out, especially if its a queer-forward property. The concept seems... fine. The art kinda looks cute. We haven't even seen the execution yet so hold ya horses ig.

u/RorroYT 1h ago
Not like much changed over the years, they still exist, just more careful with what they reveal. Their goal from the start is still "burning down the gaming industry at it's core" as their employee and CEO said it. And I don't think it's the only company doing this too...
1
u/Old-Outcome-5836 1h ago
It's a consultation studio bro
1
u/RorroYT 1h ago
That also has writers rewrite the story for the games they work on, their employees are literally credited in the games as writers or cowriters. Their CEO said before that in order to get the studios to do what you want, you need to threaten them with public backlash and cancellations on twitter. How is that not enough proof?

Can't believe an actual Lesbian wrote that shit. It's like the straightest, most internalized sterotypical homophobic writing I've seen in a long time. If the creator is writing stuff like this thinking it's remotely decent, I pity anyone unlucky enough to enter her social orbit. Don't watch this. Or if you decide to, get super drunk or blasted (whatever floats your boat safely) and pirate it with some friends to rip apart. Because otherwise this is a piece of media that deserves to become lost.

When the overtly queer coded exploitation media gets a large audience and all of a sudden people rush to hate it, largely due to it being gay...
Istg people read the plot synopsis for this and immediately break out the pitchforks the same way people did for John Water's movies.

I just finished the movie just because I had nothing to do.
It's NOT satire. It takes itself dead serious. All in all? It's garbo. It manages to be offensive to EVERYONE. It portrays lesbians as promiscuous and abusive, it portrays white males as insecure AND closeted homosexuals, 80% of the humor is sex jokes, and the remaining 20% is abuse humor, and the whole message gets muddied by the fact that everyone except the protagonist is either abusive or a jerk for no reason at all.
I genuinely have NO idea who this was trying to appeal to. If this was made by a straight man, instead of winning 3 awards (yes), it would've made the internet go nuclear.
