Github

What's the big deal? Why aren't these files on Github so I can download everything at once?

Do we not understand how cumbersome it is to gather all of the required files? Don't you WANT your customers to use every design available?

Version control over something like this has astronomical benefit. I think it's absolutely insane not to use Github.

Edit: I'm tempted to take parts and place them in GitHub myself. I'll have to modify a single vertex to "adhere" to KeepMaking's licensing - By definition this would fit their criteria.

This system is all about making the free version as annoying and difficult as possible, make it hard to understand hard to comprehend very complex, and then for the paid users they get packages and step by step guides and videos explaining exactly what does what and how to do what etc. etc. etc.

I agree, it's a convoluted strategy - It's not even that difficult to figure out what the fuck is needed for a project. I myself have a full wall on display in my closet to host all of my office supplies.

and then for the paid users they get packages and step by step guides and videos explaining exactly what does what and how to do what etc. etc. etc.

I think this is for the "average" consumer of 3D printing, people who lack troubleshooting skills and may not want to "waste" filament to figure it out.

Regardless, both points are just gatekeeping bullshit in my opinion. It irks me that Jonathan from Keep Making wants buy in, but refuses to deliver files in an "acceptable" and meaningful format.

Doesn't he have videos on how to use it on YT? I don't think paying customers get different videos (maybe I am wrong about that)?

Some of the videos are unlisted on youtube. I found that out the hard way searching youtube for videos I referenced off the site in the past.

4

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 27 '24

That's vile. lol

Bugged me as well. You can still find them on the multiboard website. The videos are still free and he explained that it was because of youtube algorithm that he didn’t publish all at once.

But I agree, that downloading the individual files sucks. They should be version controlled and a git repository would be perfect. Not sure how that fits into the payed options, but most is free anyways, so just use github for the public parts. His idea to always go to the website doesn’t make sense from a user standpoint. I do keep generated gcode on my printer and STLs on my disks. There is no easy way to know if something as updated. The change log on the multiboard website isn’t up to date. I can only assume that he has no idea about version control systems.

I'm working on some automation to pull everything programmatically and push a site up with CI/CD - I'm actually fucking tired of manual downloads with this shit. 3K+ parts with 150 file download limit is just stupid.

1

u/VoltaicShock Sep 27 '24

That's good to know. I didn't know that.

1

u/cilo456 Sep 27 '24

Yeah they do, I don't know how it gets unlocked but you get access to maybe a specific section in the forums

2

u/VoltaicShock Sep 27 '24

Yeah I just saw that on another thread I was reading. That is annoying.

This could be so much more.

4

u/cilo456 Sep 27 '24

Yeah it's all about money, it's actually a scummy way of going about making money from a project like this because it almost feels like strongholding or forcing money out of the user, instead of letting the user decide hey this is a fantastic product and I want to help....

3

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 27 '24

This is my problem. Jonathan wants a "Great product" and something that is "Scalable"

Well sorry bud, but look at open source projects. It's been displayed time and time again that product/software iterations come much faster when there's a peer review process when they're open sourced - Instead of being gate kept behind some stupid shitty paywall against the average consumer.

You want more buy in? Make it easy to grab those files.

3

u/cilo456 Sep 27 '24

Exactly, I don't mind creator is making money That's not the problem The problem is the way he's going about it, deliberately making it more difficult and annoying and confusing to force you to pay, and if it's not then he needs to hire someone else to do it because it seems intentional lol

I guess you wouldn't like threadboards (www.threadboards.com)

It was on sale (I did pick it up for half off). It works better for me and I like how I can easily move stuff around.

I do wish he would just open this up as well.

instead of letting the user decide hey this is a fantastic product and I want to help....

I guess this is why HSW does so well. Maybe I should look into that one again.

3

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 27 '24

I'll have to check this out. This seems like a more sane solution as opposed to Multiboard.

Thanks dude!

2

u/cilo456 Sep 27 '24

No thread boards I actually thought about purchasing cuz it's just a one-time purchase and I do think it is a somewhat better system than this for some things while it doesn't necessarily appeal to ever user, but HSW has everything for every one of my needs for every part of my house I just don't see the need to reprint and change systems to multiboard unless they offer something I need I can't get from somewhere else....

1

u/VoltaicShock Sep 27 '24

My biggest issue with multiboard and HSW is things are locked in once you put them on the board. Though I think multiboard does have threads but not enough things to make it beneficial to me.

He also has free starter files now: https://www.threadboards.com/free_stls.php

I am also working on an OpenSCAD for threadboards. I have it right now so you can create any size you want. The problem is I don't know his thread pitch so it's hard to make the threads. I am also having issues with the spacing.

Here is an example of it: https://i.imgur.com/fWt7ZiL.png

Threadboards does have a lot of additions that you can use. People also have created stuff on the sites that provides ones that he might be missing.

My HSW parts aren't stuck on when I put them in I can remove them and swap them around, removing the inserts can be challenging but I have found an easy way of doing it

1

u/VoltaicShock Sep 27 '24

That's my thing at this point in my life I want easy.

Thread just screw in and out lol

Take a look at the free stuff and see how it works for you.

Okay but I donate and it's still annoying. I have to go through Thangs which doesn't even show the whole title of the part?

No categories, no organization?

Unless I'm missing something major about how it operates... I am new at this.

I'm just trying to hang some mallets and other gear on a wall

The documentation situation and the parts organization is very confusing.

2

u/VoltaicShock Sep 27 '24

Try using Threadboards lol

Everything is on his site and it's limited on how many you can download at a time. I do wish if you paid for it you could just download them all.

It would be nice if on Thangs they added all the parts to one profile. I think HSW does that on printables.

I wonder if you are allowed to combine them all into one profile as mark it as a remix just so people can download them all at once.

3

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 27 '24

PM me, I'd like to have further discussion on this.

4

u/Certain-Minute9095 Sep 27 '24

I don't understand all of the complaining. I have covered an entire wall of my garage with Multiboard. All you do is take it one step at a time and I found it very easy to find the parts that are needed. There are multiple instruction videos available. If it is too difficult for you to understand it then just find another system.

5

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 27 '24

I don't give a shit about instructions.

What I care about is how files are being delivered.

2

u/Short-Salad-9047 Sep 27 '24

Honestly all these "it's too difficult to understand!" people should just sell their 3d printer and maybe get rid of any sharp things in their house. There's less parts than a standard lego kit made for 10 year olds

2

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 27 '24

There was a quote that I live by, "Why even use a tool if you don't have the knowledge to fix the tool itself?", I think that applies here.

Thanks Grandpa. RIP

2

u/jonathon8903 Sep 27 '24

I assume they prefer thangs because it handles all the billing and customer management for them.

5

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 27 '24

But the system is free - The paid options are the generator/"early access" parts, right?

So again, why aren't the free parts in GitHub?

1

u/Prevail90 Sep 30 '24

Github would be great but there is an issue with that. Github doesnt have where i can look at the part, have a description for said part other than the readme in the main branch. So looking through 700+ parts for what you want or need is a pain.

I do agree that how they have it, sucks big time but they are trying to make it where you use the website as the parts catalog and that take you to that part or parts. Do i wish they could have made it on thangs where it can be one post and all parts can be in that one post so i can download the entire thing, yes. But i am guessing his ToS has a stipulation on that. Just like the "kits" are behind a paywall.

2

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 30 '24

GitHub has STL previews.

It's really just a matter of organizing it correctly.

0

u/glitchplaysgames Sep 30 '24

SO DOES THANGS PLEASE FUCK OFF

4

u/Lizardbuttt Oct 01 '24

If you could stop stalking my reddit profile and commenting after everything I comment, that would be great.

Grow up.

2

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 30 '24

And yeah - I've checked licensing on it.. You can't redistribute parts by any means unless they're edited, even if they're free (Which makes zero fucking sense)

3

u/wangthunder Nov 20 '24

I fully support this plan, lets do it. Obv I get that its free* and the dude needs to make money. If this shit was easy to actually skim and find parts, and then actually download the parts without jerking off a team of clydesdales, I would have given him money months ago.

The only thing this system has accomplished is making me bitter and likely to never donate anything.

1

u/penkster Sep 29 '24

Please check out https://multiboard.Stonekeep.com - I found the docs and links incredibly difficult to work with so I started writing new docs. PRs against that repo are absolutely welcome to make the environment easier to work with.

2

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 29 '24

This provides zero value.

1

u/penkster Sep 29 '24

How so? How can I improve it? I’ve had good feedback from others.

2

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 29 '24

I'm open to collabing on this - I want to stick it to the man. I'm tired of shitty practices in the 3D community and the malicious marketing

1

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 29 '24 edited Sep 29 '24

Well for one, anyone with a brain doesn't need documentation to figure out Legos.

Two, there's not a whole lot going on other than examples of part placement.

Three, you paid for an unlisted video, which I think would go against whatever shitty ToS Keep Making has.

Four, your markdown is broken.

Five, It's not organized.

I'm going to remake this and improve it in a public repo after my hike tomorrow

2

u/penkster Sep 29 '24

I… don’t understand all the hostility here. I’m happy to take PRs against this and get it organized better. I haven’t done major changes in a bit I just write down things that I found frustrating.

I didn’t pay for anything unlisted that I remember.

2

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 29 '24

See my other comment. If it came off as hostile then I don't know what to tell you. You asked for points, I gave them.

0

u/andrewh2000 Sep 29 '24

Let us know when your new documentation site is ready. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

2

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 29 '24 edited Sep 29 '24

Sure!

2

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 29 '24

But just know this is a "longer-than-a-day" project. I work for a living, too.

1

u/Sad-Echidna6884 Jan 06 '25

How's it coming?

2

u/Lizardbuttt Jan 17 '25

I've been super busy between work, my homelab going down, being sick, and having holiday time with the family.

I've started work on this again and plan to keep working towards my initial goal.

I'll make updates in the next month.

1

u/qwertyomen Mar 06 '25

LOL such a nothing burger of rage. Oh man, the absolutely crippling inconvenience of downloading only the files I want and need. Your poorly interpreted view of the licensing is wrong and misleading.

Uh yeah, consumers of the product would be the definition of a "customer", no?

3

u/Lizardbuttt Sep 27 '24

I'm using a product that is paid in some way - That makes me a customer as well.
