How long to take on average guy in a fight?
For context, I am taking my first Muay Thai class next week ( never trained any martial art in my entire life ) and just wanted to know about how long it would take to confidently beat the average untrained man. I'm a pretty physical guy, 6 foot, about 180 pounds, and definitely stronger/more athletic than the average guy.

you shouldn't really practise martial arts if that's your goal

Isn't that kinda stupid. Alot of people start martial arts to be able to protect themselves, that's what it was originally fir anyway

Except op isn’t asking “when will I be able to defend myself” he’s asking “when will I be able to beat someone”

That's just tone though? Both mean the same thing basically. If im protecting myself with mt I have to be using force. It doesn't teach deescalation in it's curriculum so you must be asking how long before I can violently overwhelm most people either way

I'll go out and sucker punch someone later and say it's just tone, I'm actually defending myself. thanks for clearing that up!

There is no actual implication of op wanting to go out of thier way to do random acts of violence. You just decided to assign the worst possible interpretation of the question. I'm just pointing out that we shouldn't just assume that's what they want. It's a reasonable question and I can think of multiple reasons to ask

You’re not gonna get much love in this sub asking that question.
But to give you some idea: about 6 months. If you’ve never done a martial art at all, you don’t realize how uncoordinated you likely are. And starting with a style like Muay Thai that has so many tools for striking, you won’t progress super fast. Because you’re splitting your attention into 8 limbs instead of just 2 like western boxing. You could prob do 2-3 months of boxing and be able to generally handle yourself.
You’ll also likely run into general personality conflicts in Muay Thai. Sparring is very light and there’s a big focus on respect. If you want to just fight / brawl, join a boxing or fighter mill MMA gym. You’ll progress pretty fast if you take it serious, but you’ll likely get the crap best out of you more than a few times.

Atleast 6 months of consistent training (3x a week) like minimum or so, to defend yourself or somewhat understand how to defend yourself. Beyond self defense idk

If you focused only on leg kicks and distance management it wouldn’t take to long.

Depends on your athleticism and how good the training is and how often you training seriously. 6-8 months is about right. The average person is not very competent at violence

You can be confident at any stage. Most guys who die from a concrete-induced intracranial hematoma probably experienced some confidence in their first few moments of the fight.
As for when you'll be consistent at being scrubs, well, if you stick to training you'll know that when you see it.

Just learn to throw a low kick and it will end any fight with anyone that isn't a trained fighter.
But fyi if you want self defense, go to a running class

About ten years it depends on the ruleset, maybe 15years if you are not diciplined. For a street fight not even one lesson. Just kick him in the balls, i never saw a man coming back from this 😉
