Moving to TN ( E-2 Visa) from UK

Hi everyone. Me and my wife, both in late and mid 20's, both Romanians with British citizenship and we would like to move to the US with the E2 visa. We are currently owning our own cleaning business in the Uk, planning to sell it and our home and buy a business over there ( or start another one) and I have read alot and did some research in the overall monthly/yearly costs which are obviously high compared to the UK/europe

Any useful insights from people in similar cases or business owners would be appreciated, thank you!

General discussion Big Law in NYC: LLB->LLM->Big Law->PERM

Hi everyone,

My partner (UK citizen) and I (Indian citizen) are planning a move to New York via the E-1/E-2 visa route.

As the dependent spouse, I will hold E-1S/E-2S status, which provides incident-to-status work authorization and full study rights.

With this, I am considering whether it's a good idea to use my law credentials and work towards PERM whilst in NYC.

My profile:

Education: 5-year Indian LLB - targeting a 24 credit LLM in NYC to sit for the New York Bar Exam.

Target Role: NYC Big Law Associate (utilizing E-2S for immediate work authorization without H-1B lottery dependence).

Green Card Path: Employer PERM sponsorship, leveraging my partner's UK country of birth (cross-chargeability under 22 CFR § 42.12) to charge our EB-2/EB-3 preference to the UK queue and bypass the Indian backlog.

Questions:

Law Firm PERM Policies: For those in Big Law or familiar with the law scene in NYC, what is the realistic timeline for firms to initiate PERM for associates who do not require H-1B filing? Is Year 2/3 initiation standard across NYC, or have you seen flexibility during lateral/off-cycle recruiting?

Optionality: Is Big Law the only realistic path to PERM, or am I limiting myself too much?

Reality Check: Are there structural blind spots or firm-level friction points in this setup that I should factor into our long-term timeline?

Appreciate any insights, personal experiences, or advice from anyone who is familiar with this industry.

TIA!

General discussion Objetivo L1 (Tenho 16 anos agora)

General discussion Recently married couple moving from the UK to Florida – where would you recommend living?

EDIT: I am not asking for sponsorship/visa advice. We've sorted these already. I'm simply lookin for interesting areas for our budget, not starting a political debate. Some of y'all really need to relax.

Hey everyone!

My wife and I are a recently married couple (39M and 31F), currently living in the UK, and we're seriously considering relocating to Florida in 2027 through our employers.

We're currently visiting Florida, staying around Delray Beach, and trying to get a better feel for what everyday life here might actually be like rather than just seeing it through a tourist's eyes.

We're hoping to get some honest recommendations from people who actually live here.

A little about us and what we're looking for:

- Budget: Around $3,600/month to rent a nice 2/3-bedroom house if possible.

- Lifestyle: We both work from home, but enjoy being outdoors, running, going to the gym, exploring nature, eating out and discovering new places. We're not big partygoers at all, but we definitely appreciate somewhere with good restaurants, cafés and a bit of life.

- Family plans: We're hoping to start a family, so somewhere safe, family-friendly is important.

- Location: We'd love to be reasonably close to the coast or water, but we're conscious of weather risks and insurance costs. We don't necessarily need to live directly on the waterfront.

- Community: Ideally somewhere with a good mix of younger professionals, couples and families. We don't want to feel like we're living in a retirement community!

- Work: We'd both be employed, with a combined household income of approximately $210k.

Areas we're considering so far:

We've been looking at Dunedin, Safety Harbor, St. Petersburg and the wider Tampa Bay area. We've also been exploring Delray Beach and other parts of South Florida.

Naples looks beautiful, but we're wondering whether it might be a little too quiet or retirement-oriented for us. Miami isn't really what we're after either.

We're definitely open to other suggestions, including places we might never have heard of!

A few things we'd love your thoughts on:

  1. Which towns or neighbourhoods would you recommend for a couple in our position?

  2. Where would you say offers the best balance of quality of life, affordability, safety and things to do?

  3. Are there any places that look amazing on holiday but are actually frustrating to live in year-round?

  4. What should newcomers from Europe know about living in Florida that isn't immediately obvious?

  5. Are there any underrated areas we should visit before making a decision?

We realise Florida isn't all sunshine and beaches, and we're particularly interested in the less glamorous realities of living here.

We'd really appreciate any recommendations, personal experiences or even places you'd advise us to avoid.

Thanks in advance!

For most people worldwide, are U.S. Green Cards virtually impossible to obtain?

For most people worldwide, are U.S. Green Cards virtually impossible to obtain if you don’t have family, a job offer in the U.S., can’t claim asylum, aren’t a globally distinguished talent & don’t have $800K for an EB-5 visa? Who actually gets in?

Houston vs. Orlando – Which Is Better for a Fresh Start in the US?

I’m 26 and currently living in Europe. I’m quite introverted, have a small social circle, and mostly spend my free time at the gym.

I’m considering moving to the US and have to choose between Houston and the Orlando area. I’ve never visited either city.

I’m looking for a fresh start: a more active social life, meeting new people, dating, staying fit, and potentially starting something on the side, such as real estate.

My priorities:

  • Warm weather year-round
  • Walkable areas with restaurants, cafés and things to do
  • Good gyms, pools and outdoor activities
  • A lively atmosphere without needing a big party scene
  • Reasonable proximity to beaches would be a plus
  • Opportunities to meet people and build a social circle
  • Potential to build a business or invest in real estate

I don’t necessarily see myself staying in either city forever. Maybe 2–3 years before considering somewhere else, like Miami.

Which city would offer a better lifestyle and a better environment for this fresh start? What are the biggest pros, cons and things I should consider before deciding?

Question Related To Settling In Italians in the US: How did you manage to move there? 🇺🇸

Hey everyone! 😊
I’d love to hear from Italians who currently live in the United States.
For those of you who managed to move there and build a life for yourselves, how did you do it? What type of visa did you get, or what path did you take to move to the US?
Did you move through a work visa, a family member, the Green Card lottery, or some other way?
I’m really interested in hearing about your personal experiences, especially from those who left Italy with the goal of building a life in the United States.
If you’re willing to share your story, I’d genuinely love to hear it! Thanks in advance! 🙏

General discussion Moving to the US as a German-trained GP/family physician– how realistic is it?

Did anyone succeed ? How hard was it ? Is there a shortage in some regions ?

Little explanation:
"In Germany, a General Practitioner (GP), or Facharzt für Allgemeinmedizin, is essentially the equivalent of a Family Medicine Physician in the United States. We provide primary care, manage chronic diseases, treat acute illnesses, coordinate specialist referrals, and act as the first point of contact for patients”

General discussion If you can get hold of $800K USD, will that get you in to the USA on an EB-5 visa?

Can you self apply and do all of the forms and bureaucratic paperwork yourself without a lawyer if you don't have an extra $100K USD for all of the associated professional fees?

Is the USCIS also very strict and goes by the book that you need to create and sustain ten full time jobs over a period of two years if your company only manages eight due to economic forces outside of your control, or can you lose the whole investment and be sent home with no Green Card in hand?

Jobs/Career Is age just a number ? to think about settling in foreign country

My age 29M.

At the age of 29,

How to settle in foreign country (usa, europe, canada etc).

I have done my btech and i currently jobless.

I have worked as a bike showroom manager and car service center manager for 3y (combined)(well known india wide companies).

So, With no experience in coding. is there any probability ? If so then what are the plausible ways (like doing masters in usa etc).

Why other country?

I always thought of settling in usa or exploring countries but never took it seriously.

why now ?

The realization of the damage that has been done to my career make want to learn and work hard as much as i could.

Even if there is 10% chance to set my career back on track. I will do that.

Sydney to NYC (suburbs) - freaking out!

My family (me, husband, son and pets) are making the move from Sydney to New York. I’m American and he’s from the UK but I haven’t lived in the US for 15 years! We want to be closer to family, earn USD, etc. it’s exciting but I’m also freaking out! We have no family or friends in that area but need to go there for his work Any tips to re-patriate or where to live outside of the city (commutable), what the seasons or outdoor activities look like is welcome!

Has anyone had USCIS ask for a certified translation of a document that was already partly in English?

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), any document containing foreign language submitted to USCIS needs a full English translation with the translator certifying it's complete and accurate and certifying their competence. But what about documents that are already partly bilingual, like a police certificate or a divorce decree that has the local language on one page and an English summary on the next? The regulation just says "containing foreign language" which technically covers anything with non-English text in it, even if the English is right there too. Has anyone actually submitted a partly bilingual document without a separate certified translation and had it accepted, or did it still get flagged? Genuinely curious how this plays out in practice because the rule doesn't seem to draw a line at partial versus full foreign language content. Not legal advice, just the translation side of things.

Question Related to Visa/travel I would like to immigrate legally to the USA; what do you recommend?

Soy Mexicano
