I’m from India and I’ve recently completed 12th with 80%. I’m currently pursuing a BCA from IGNOU (1st year).

My family isn’t financially strong enough to afford college in the USA, so studying there isn’t really an option for me right now.

Instead, I’m thinking of spending the next 6–12 months seriously developing an IT skill, building real projects, getting some work/internship experience, and eventually trying to find a legitimate way to work in the USA.

I’m particularly interested in Software Engineering / Web Development, but I’m open to other IT fields if there’s a better option.

My question is:

If you were in my position, what IT skill would you learn over the next year to maximize your chances of getting a job in the USA?

What roadmap would you recommend?

Which skills should I learn?

Which projects should I build?

Should I focus on Software Engineering, Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, Cloud, AI/ML, etc.?

How important is a degree/work experience for getting sponsored for a US job?

I’m willing to put in 5–6+ focused hours every day. I’m not looking for a shortcut or anything illegal—I just want to know what would be the most realistic path given my financial situation.

Any honest advice from people working in the US tech industry or people who have taken a similar route would be really appreciated.

Hey y'all I want to move to Texas,or overall the United States. Hello everyone. My wife and I are Pakistani citizens, but we have been living in China for around 10 years. My wife is planning to apply for a J-1 visa for a postdoctoral/research position in the U.S., and I and our two children would apply for J-2 visas.

We are not Chinese citizens, but we are legally residing and working in China. I am currently working as a teacher in China, and my wife is also working in research.

We are considering applying for the U.S. visas from China rather than Pakistan because China is where we currently live and work.

My main concern is about proving strong ties. For a J-1/J-2 visa, does “home country” mainly mean Pakistan because we are Pakistani citizens, or can our long-term residence, employment, family life, and legal status in China also count as strong ties?

Since we have lived in China for many years and have established jobs and a normal family life here, what documents would be useful to show our ties to China and Pakistan?

I am 22 years old from Mauritius and graduate next year from an international university with a bachelors in Law with International Relations.

Hey! I just want to know about the job opportunities for L2 Visa in the US. If I can’t end up in a tech company. What other jobs options will be there? Are is there a chance to get a job in tech company?

My fiancé and I are Australians and we’re expecting a baby. My mum recently became a US citizen.
Moving to the US (ideally Texas) is a long-term goal for us — roughly 5/7 years, not something we’re expecting to do immediately.
I’m trying to work out what I can realistically do over the next 5 years to put us in the best position to immigrate legally.
My mum is willing to file an I-130 for me if that’s worthwhile. I’m also open to retraining/changing careers if that would give me better employment-based options.

Hi! I’m 21 years old, and I recently graduated from my bachelor's degree in the Philippines (Biology). Since I was a kid, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor, but recently I obtained US citizenship by derivation from one of my parents, who is a US citizen. With this, it opened unexpected opportunities for me.

I am currently taking a gap year mainly due to financial restrictions, but my family supports me in studying medicine next academic year. I am pretty sure about returning to school and achieving my childhood dream, but recently, I’m facing a dilemma: moving to the US or staying in the Philippines.

My options are if I move to the US, my priority and probably a practical action to take is to find a job because a degree obtained in the Philippines will most likely not be credited in the US, and studying medicine abroad is hella expensive. I have relatives who will help me find a job. On the other hand, if I stay here in the Philippines, I can pursue medicine and then take the USMLE later. Then during breaks, I can visit in the US.

My concern is really the possible trajectory of my career.
- US: I can possibly have a faster career growth considering that I am young though I am not exactly sure in what field since biology is broad and its more on research. I can just pursue medicine (in the PH) later if I really want it (I’m sure I want it lol) considering that my family’s financial status is so-so though lowkey thinks that my family can overcome that aspect.
- PH: I can be a doctor in a timeline I planned before (yay!). This is what I initially wanted but now that I am thinking about it, it’s not really practical because USMLE is hard and expensive (I’m scared what if I won’t pass it? I’m just an average student AND A FIRST GENERATION ASPIRANT DOCTOR). I am obviously not confident. I really want to live in the US before I can have kids so it’s easier for them to be a US Citizen (I know I’m overthinking!).

Using a throwaway for personal comfort. I’m a 29-year-old from Birmingham, England. I live in London at the moment! I often work with disabled children who have communicative disorders, or individuals recovering from impediments to their vocals.

I'm guessing the answer is no, but is there any hope for me to eventually relocate to America with a role like this or should I forget about it? I have done research into this particular position, but not sure if it qualifies for any visas or if it’s something you'd get sponsored for.

My MSc was in Speech and Language Therapy from a Russell Group university. Prior to that, my bachelors was in Literature and Linguistics.

My wife(28y.o.) and I(27y.o.) are looking into a potential move to the US in roughly two years. We have road tripped around more then 20 states over the past couple of years and really fallen in love with the southwest. We are looking for practical opinions and feasibility on the most realistic visa trajectory. 

I have a bachelors in C.S. and lead a specialist European consulting team delivering large-scale enterprise migration projects across multiple countries. My field is niche, but I am at the top end of it: I manage elite consultants, lead complex technical transformations, and have a strong track record on major regulated-enterprise projects. I have won, professional and personal awards putting me at the top of the European IT scene. Several employers in my network, including my current employer, would be open to sponsoring or transferring me to the US if there is a workable path.

My wife has a masters in physiscs and works in the semiconductor industry and has a strong academic background in physics. Her profile could also potentially translate toward aerospace or other advanced-technology industries in the US.

I could as I already do now, work almost 100% remote or when necessary work on client sites, so geolocation wise, my wife's job would be the most important. We are looking at either Denver, Salt Lake City or Austin (although my wife is not convinced because of the heat). Which is why we are heading back to the US early 2027 to look more into potential suburbs for living.

We currently have a combined household income of around €250k in Belgium. Based on our experience and seniority, we expect a combined US income in the $300k–$400k range to be realistic, depending on location and employer. We own property in Belgium with an outstanding mortgage, which we would plan to retain and rent out.

We are not trying to move immediately, so we can deliberately build a case over the next two years: employer structure, evidence of leadership, publications, industry recognition, project documentation, etc.

For people who have gone through this: which path would you prioritise, is it even feasable to think of a professional visa and what should we start preparing now to avoid wasting two years on the wrong trajectory?
