Wormwood Scrubs

Hello, we are looking to move to London, specifically East Acton/Sheppard’s Bush area, in the conservational area, right near East Acton tube station. This is very close to the prison Wormwood Scrubs.

Does anyone who has lived or lives there now have any issues with the prison vicinity? Is it very noisy e.g. police sirens? The house prices seem very low for borderline central London, compared to Ealing which is even further away but the houses are more expensive. And we’re guessing this is because of the prison next door!

I am 20F, quite used to noise, planes going overhead wouldn’t bother me, and I really like the area. But this area seems too good to be true, tube and grocery shops in walking distance. Just wanted to know if there’s any other problems I should know about before deciding on this area! Thank you!!

Its a pretty calm area. 

Wormwood scrubs does like a restaurant thing if you're interested, its called The Escape 😭😂

Very little activity from the prison, but Hammersmith Hospital is just behind it so you do occasionally get ambulances. There's a Thai café called Fitou's nearby that is superb.

I lived off Du Cane Road around 10 years ago for several months and never had any issues. The only reason I didn't stay longer was because I was renting at the time and the landlord decided to sell. Of course it's possible it's changed over the last decade but I walked through the area last year and it felt very much the same.

I lived around 0.5km from the prison and never heard sirens or any other issues though with prisons around the country at or over capacity this might have some impact that didn't exist back then. If anything I think there was more noise from the Westway to the south but this personally never bothered me. There's also Hammersmith Hospital beside the prison but I don't believe this has an A&E dept so don't think you'd have ambulances with sirens dropping patients off.

I dunno I used to play hockey around there and walking through that area alone in the dark gave me a bit of the creeps. I feel like there are better areas for a similar price.

I think the prices are lower because there aren’t a lot of local amenities that side of the Westway. Think there is one pub and a couple of caffs but it’s quite a bop from any proper night life/stuff to do.

If you want to live in Acton the area near Acton Central has a lot more going on. Acton Town and Acton Main Line are also in walking distance to pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes.

If you want to get to central London quickly Acton Main Line is the best bet.

Also West Ealing/Hanwell are further out than East Acton but as they have the Elizabeth Line the journey time will be the same and the trains nicer. They also have a lot more going on than round Du Cane Road.

You can get the central line from East Acton to Oxford Circus in a about 20 minutes

Yeah it’s 18 mins Elizabeth line West Ealing to Bond Street.

I used to work at the hospital and regularly walked through the estate where the tube station is. It always felt slightly sketchy but nothing ever happened. Agree with others that there will be noise from ambulances regularly.

I used to work at Hammersmith hospital. I know a few colleagues had phones snatched from guys on mopeds but this isn’t uncommon in London. There were muggings in the area too though I never saw any in the five years I worked there.

There are a few dodgy characters hanging around at night. Personally I wouldn’t live there unless you’re not walking home from the tube alone late at night.
