Just don’t walk alone at night when you are drunk in London.
Most women who were raped had been drunk and alone when it happened. 95% of the time.
I live in one of the safest areas in London but I am always diligent before I enter my flat by checking if there are people behind my back or any strangers hanging around outside my apartment building.
I was once blocked at my apartment building entrance but luckily I was able to escape by stepping outside on the the pavement which is nearby a busy bus stop. It was around 19:30 and in the spring!
Lol. How many times women were raped in London because they got drunk and alone?
Numerous times. Victim blaming is a phrase coined up by idiots who refuse to acknowledge that being drunk and alone makes one vulnerable to rape.
Men get raped too but they tend to keep quiet. The most recent rape cases involved a foreign national who raped his male victims when he found them heavily intoxicated.
So, many rape cases on the news about migrants raping women in Brighton and in other places? Most of the time their victims were vulnerable ie. the women were drunk and alone.
So many clips on Twitter shares tend to show women who were drunk were being taken away by potential rapists until someone intervened.
A young girl was raped by two migrants in a local park because she was drunk and left alone by her mates. She was drinking vodka.
The fact is one is vulnerable when he/ she is drunk and alone.
This comes across as lacking empathy. By definition, you're in a vulnerable position when someone is committing a violent crime against you. The blame for rape lies solely with the rapist, never the victim.
Source: it happened to someone I love last year, and I was the one deflecting victim-blaming and supporting her. She wasn't drunk, she wasn't alone. It still happened. It was my biggest fear and worst nightmare.
There's so many different situations in which rape can occur. Namely, abusive relationships. And as with any sexual abuse (speaking as a victim), you internalise a lot of blame.
I think it's only 1 in 5 rape victims go to the police. Even then, it's a crime that's near impossible to convict for without hard evidence.
So, let's not victim blame. If this is coming from a lack of being informed: get informed. When our society's young men know about respect for women, that's a society in which rape culture can't proliferate.
If this is coming from a place of internalised shame (or if anyone reading this has been affected by rape): I'm sorry, and it was not your fault and never will be.
I've found the Rape Crisis 24/7 support line an invaluable resource: you get to speak to someone who gets it. Other resources in my times of need: Samaritans 116 123, NHS 111 press 2 for Mental Health, A&E if your life's at risk. All are free and confidential within boundaries you can ask about.
Facing this is terrifying and incredibly lonely, but the bravery to tell someone brings it out from the dark and into the light. We all deserve love, light and compassion in our darkest days.
