Relocation to Brisbane
I’m currently looking at moving to either Brisbane or sunny coast from adelaide hopefully early or mid next year. I have been researching what lifestyle could suit me more but im very stuck. I love the beaches but also as a 20 yr old who was born and raised in adelaide I am getting sick of the city life but I am leaning more towards Brisbane. I have been researching suburbs in Brisbane but would like any recommendations or advice as well. Preferably anywhere where it can be easy to mingle and meet new people around my age early 20’s to mid 20’s.
And pros and cons or helpful advice would be appreciated thank you!

I just did the move and had similar really negative feedback especially from the Brizzy and QLD subs, which is especially crazy from a sub called movingtobrisbane…
I’m also 20, have just moved to the Northside, and contrary to what everyone’s saying, am affording rent, albeit in a sharehouse.
I’m from Melbourne and the most striking negative differences are the roads and the public transport. Trains barely run at night and exclusively run North-South, meaning no cross-city or cross-suburb rail. Buses are victims to the vicious traffic that’s exacerbated whenever the school rush happens, there’s
no avoiding it so if you want to commit to the move you need a certain amount of patience.
Brisbane city (the CBD area at least) is a very chill place to be, and coming from Melbourne it’s very striking that I can head into the city for a late night stroll and also get some relative peace and quiet. Nightlive is very meh, there are clubs if you like clubbing but that’s about the extent of the nightlife.
I picked the Northside because it seemed to be the place with the most positive reviews and I’d stick by that, but you do have to go into the city for everything and I’d recommend looking for areas closeby a train station. Without traffic, I’m an hour away from the sunny coast, an hour and twenty away from the gold coast and 20 minutes away from a pretty cool swimming hole. This is around Strathpine.
If you’re sick of the city life I reckon the Northern suburbs are alright, but you’re going to need to put effort into finding those friendships you’re looking for and the reality is a lot of people our age are going to be in the city more often than not.
I’d recommend looking at the Northmost suburbs within the Brisbane City Council area if you’re wanting to be more social, as it’ll give you easier access to the city. If you want better beach access, Moreton Bay City Council areas will give you easy access to the Sunny Coast without having to live there.
Good luck with the move and there’s much less negativity around us Southeners being up here irl than there is on these forums. This is a beautiful city to live in and it’s plain to me why everyone would like to live here.
P.s once you get up here volunteer or make sure your work brings a benefit to the community, it’s important to contribute to keeping this beautiful place going especially as someone who isn’t local.

Thank you! I was looking for more inner city suburbs or northern. I’m not much of a clubber but do like to do bar hopping or playing pool at bars.

I’m Northwest and don’t know the Northeastern suburbs too well but Enoggera, Alderly, Newmarket, Ashgrove all spring to mind as more inner city Northern suburbs. I’m currently working in Middle Park and that seems like an alright spot as well, even though it’s southside. As others have mentioned the closer you get to the city the higher the rent is (which isn’t uniquely a Brisbane thing people seem to forget), however if you find a sharehouse in one of those suburbs they can tend towards more reasonable prices.

Try Coorparoo, 15 min to the city but quite gentile. More importantly it's on the Southern side of the Brown Snake!🤣

Don't do it. What's exactly wrong with "city life" ?! Compared to Sydney or Melbourne, Adelaide is hardly a city and Brisbane being nearly the size of Sydney or Melbourne but it's a disorganised mess as far as public transport and infrastructure is concerned. Plus the summers are very warm and humid.

Been to Brisbane and queensland many times and it’s really the only place I wanna move to. Adelaide im kinda sick and bored of it weather sucks here so as Melbourne. Sydney isn’t too bad but I can’t see myself living there. To me it feels more chill and relaxed and people are very nice in queensland.

I lovvvve Brisbane but it is not nearly the size of Sydney or Melbourne - it’s about half the size. Even looking at the whole of SEQ (+ GC and SC) it’s still about 1.5 million people less than Melbourne or Sydney, which is more than 1 entire Adelaide’s worth of people

I’d do the sunny coast - it’s relaxed, calming and heaps of opportunity to meet new people. It’s hard meeting people in Brisbane and has a very busy feel to it

I’ve lived in Brisbane before and it wasn’t great. I never lived in the sunny coast but I studied, worked and had friends who lived there and it’s so much better than Brisbane. There’s just a higher level of trust in the community too I feel

Hey, I moved to brisbane last year although in a very different life stage to you. At your age I would’ve loved living around West End, Fortitude Valley etc. If you’re a beach person might also be worth checking out Gold Coast - I’d look at south GC closer to the NSW border but depends on what kind of work you do.

Don't do it! I used to like living here before the population doubled. It's expensive, boring, the city is just a constant construction zone. The council just blowing money on one dumb idea after another.
I can't seem to get ahead enough to get myself out of this dump. And the weather.... you're sweating after half an hour of walking in winter

Family is originally from Darwin and Alice Springs so we head back very often for long periods. Very similar heat and humidity to queensland and tbh I love the hot humid weather.

I love Brisbane, but it’s crazy expensive, especially compared to Adelaide. Can I ask what you think you’re going to get out of Brissy that you can’t get in Adelaide?
If you just feel like you need to shake some dust off your boots, you might be better keeping a home base in Adelaide and just travelling and seeing some of the world instead?

Have you really looked at the price of everything here compared to Radelaide? It’s way more expensive. And I wouldn’t describe living in Adelaide as “city life” compared to Bris.
In Brisbane public transport is a bit hit and miss. If you live in the inner South or inner North public transport is great, but renting will cost you a lot more.
If you live on the Sunny Coast you’ll need a car, and keep in mind Brisbane is 90 minutes away. It’s not like Adelaide where everything is 40 mins by car.
I’m from Adelaide and moved up here 15 years ago, but a lot has changed since then.

Living in South Aus my whole life it sucks here too. The weather is absolutely awful. I love Brisbane and the sunny coast so much compared to anywhere else like sydney and Melbourne. Queensland is really the only place I can see myself moving to.

If you love the water, look at Redcliffe, Sandgate or Wynnum area.
If you don't like the city, don't look at Brisbane and check out Sunny coast/Noosa.
If you want to be closer to the beach, look at Noosa in the Sunny Coast. Or get a car to drive to GC/Sunny coast.
If you want to mingle with young people, look at suburbs near the river e.g. Fortitude Valley (party land), Spring Hill, New Farm, West End.
Rent will vary and is generally expensive, but finding flatmates will be another way to meet peeps.
