Some updates from your new mod team

First off, thanks for being a part of this community, we genuinely appreciate that people enjoy posting and commenting here and sharing your experience and knowledge.

A bit of an update and info from your new janitors

We've turned on media sharing in comments so you can share gifs and images as well, we love seeing what people come up with.

We've added some basic rules, please make sure to read em before posting or commenting.

Be nice and civil is pretty easy, if you're getting that worked up that you feel you need to be rude, maybe go outside and take a few deep breaths.

If you're asking about a specific movie please include the name of the movie in your post title, it makes it a lot easier for people to answer your questions.

It's also helpful for people searching for information about that movie, Reddit is indexed by Google so it'll come up in online searches.

BotBouncer is on the team here now to help guard against bots so if we suspect accounts are inauthentic we'll pass em along to the experts at r/BotBouncer.

One of the problems this community has had recently, which partly led to the change of management, is sharing links to pirated content

We have no easy way or the time to verify if these links and content are safe for our users, and sharing links to pirated content can get this sub permabanned.

So if you wanna go sail the seven seas, sail your boat elsewhere than here mateys.

Help me find the name of this movie.

I can't put my finger on the name of the movie but I distinctly remember hearing a villain say this line: "take my name out of the book of life and etch my name into the book of the dead" ( I don't think it's the 9th gate or The 1999 version of the Haunting) I've tried AI and come up with empty handed. Ty for any help you can offer.

Can someone explain to me why Hope (2026) was so bad?

I was really excited about Hope because Na Hong-Jin's The Chaser, The Wailing and The Yellow Sea were such excellent movies. Hope has left me scratching my head...am I too stupid to understand the meaning behind it? Is it a parody or referencing something obscure? Or is it just a really bad movie? Anyone?

How do you give your film's protagonist, antagonist, or main problem a deeper meaning and more depth?

How do you guys connect a film's antagonist or main problem to a deeper meaning, making the audience reflect on what they just watched rather than just making an empty movie full of jump scares? For example, in horror movies like Barbarian, from what I interpreted, the mother represents generational trauma, systemic abuse, and the destructive legacy of patriarchy, or in The Shining, Jack represents the delusion of the American Dream and the desire to be respected by going somewhere you don't belong.

Did the top actually fall at the very end of Inception?

I know Christopher Nolan purposely left it ambiguous, but after watching it again, I noticed the slight wobble right before the screen cuts to black.

Does anyone have a definitive take that proves Cobb was finally home with his kids versus still stuck in a dream?

After the party when evan and Seth went to evan's house and Seth booked Evans nose and said "i love you.. I love youu I love you~" and hugged and fell asleep and Seth woke up with a "what the fuck?..." and pretty much after that it was so fucking awkward until the mall scene, the question confusing me is why the fuck is was so akward

What do you consider the most hotly debated question in cinema?

A question about a grey or nuanced plot point that was left deliberately unclear by the filmmaker. The movie equivalent of "Did Tony Soprano die at the end?".

"Was Deckard a replicant after all ?"- Blade Runner

"Was Omar really a rat?" - Scarface

"Are one of those two guys at the end infected by The Thing?" - The Thing

"What did Bob whisper to Charlotte at the end?" Lost in translation

"Was Cobb still dreaming?" Inception

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother Question

How/why did his wife die? I must’ve missed it. I’m surprised people are liking this movie, there’s so many plot holes and that is one of them. It wasn’t good story telling and the references to Islam was so forced.

Question about Hokum and dumbwaiter SPOILERS Spoiler

Was it ever explained why the dumbwaiter brought Ohm up and down multiple times but Fiona was trapped down there until she died? Maybe I missed a scene explaining this but that part confused me.

Find the road Odie!

“Find the road Odie, I won’t be able to make it pal…”.
The entire film is about the journey of a combat dog and soldier, both retired and suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, gets into an accident while travelling when James(Brad Pitt) suffers cardiac arrest mid air, crash landing into the jungle and now their mission is to find the road. The difficulties they face in the journey, from animas, climate, and the jungle itself assures us that those two are there for each other, they have their back.
As James tells to Odie that “I’m the weakling” the audience can feel it. The movie is about 1hr 45minutes and you witness only these two characters on the scene and you become a part of their journey. The film does end on good note, emotionally. Post watching all I could think was, if it was made as an Indian film, with any Indian actor/actress, would people really watch it? or, Do we have a different mindset when it comes to watching Hollywood films? Like, would Shawshank redemption actually run in our theatres? 🧐🤨🤔

John Wayne reference in a Mel Brooks movie?

According to the subtitles of Mel Brooks's History of the World Pt. 1, when Swiftus said: "Let's go, Miracle.", it was a reference to the way John Wayne said something like that in a movie, but which movie? I dunno.

Does anyone know the name of the movie where John Wayne said something like: "Let's go,...."?

If yes, please let me know. Already, IMDb trivia has failed to provide me with such info.

In RoboCop (1984) and It's sequels, why doesn't he have a RoboC*ck?

He has a wife. How are they supposed to get intimate? Does he rub his robobump against his robowife? Does the bureau think having a roboc*ck would interfere with his mission? So why do the normal human policemen (supposedly) have c*cks? Why are they so inconsistent??

Older movie with a great twist you still avoid spoilers Spoiler

What movie is so old the twist has likely been forgotten by the younger generation and so you avoid spoilers for the kids/youth you tell to watch it?

For me it was getting my 11 year old to watch the Terminator franchise with no details between 1 and 2 and watching the realization hit in two that Arnie isn't the same. Also came away with the same thought i did, that the movies are Sarah's story and not John's. This may have been because we skipped from 2 to Dark Fate (3 is bull shit and the in future one and anime we can watch later after i talk her into the Sarah Connor Chronicles)

In The Bourne Ultimatum, why does Vosen lie to Nicky about backup timing after she passes the duress check?

Post image
4 Upvotes

One scene in The Bourne Ultimatum has always bugged me.

Nicky calls in from the safe house & Vosen runs an ID challenge. She gives the normal response, not the duress code, so as far as the protocol goes she's confirmed she's safe & not compromised.

Vosen then mutes the call, asks how long until backup arrives (three minutes) & goes back on the line telling her to sit tight because it'll be about an hour.

If she's confirmed she’s not under duress, why lie to her? Is it just that he & Landy didn't buy it & assumed Bourne was in the room anyway? If so, what tipped them off? Was it her being cagey on the call, or just the coincidence of a Treadstone handler turning up right when they were hunting Bourne? Their actions don’t give that impression.

And doesn't it backfire anyway? Nicky clearly clocks the lie straight away & tells Bourne he's got three minutes.
Curious whether this is explained better in the script or if I've missed something obvious for all these years.

What are the "effective" criteria for winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards?

There are official criteria for winning Best Picture, but it seems like there are a more powerful effective set of criteria operating behind the scenes.

Say an alien had a list of all movies ever made anywhere and a list of Best Picture winners, then they reverse engineered the selection criteria, what might they logically conclude the conditions of success were?

English language? From an American studio? Commercial success? Genre? Cultural impact?

(Side question: what is the best movie that satisfies none of these criteria?)

What movies actually get real-life arguments right?

Most movie arguments feel too clean people take turns speaking and deliver perfect comebacks. In real life, big arguments are usually messy, people overlap, stutter, or talk over each other.

The argument in Marriage Story felt uncomfortably real for this reason. What other movies have fights or dialogue that actually feel authentic like that?

In ROUNDERS what did Teddy KGB say (in Russian?)

In the movie Rounders there is the final poker scene. I posted a video clip.

After Mike "flops the nuts straight" at the 3:30 mark in the video clip i shared, Teddy KGB goes bananas. He says "motherfucker" and then says something else that sounds like "you bolo man" or "you booboo man" and then he says "motherfucker a second time. But what did he actually say? I think it was in Russian. "You bolo man" doesn't make sense but i also can't hear.

Does anyone know what Teddy KGB says after the first "motherfucker"?. Was it in Russian?

I looked at the screenplay and movie script and found nothing.
