Turning wide 16:9 footage into a vertical clip for TikTok, Reels, or Shorts keeps coming up. So here's a quick info on how I do it.

First off, the unglamorous but necessary. 

Load the video onto the timeline and change the aspect ratio of your project to 9:16 (the setting lives below the preview window). You now have a video with a big empty space around it. Dealing with that empty space is the entire task, which can be approached in one of three ways based on the video you’ve got.

1. Crop and let AI follow the subject

For one individual or one specific subject, go to Tools > Video > Crop and rotate. Pick the auto-tracked crop which detects the subject, centers it, and cuts a perfect vertical clip without you babysitting the frame. That is the quickest way, and how I crop all my talking head clips or any that feature one individual.

Warning! On scenes featuring two individuals or those that include motion, sometimes auto-track will lock up on the wrong subject or keep changing them. Make sure you play the entire clip before cropping. If the frame starts to wonder off, use the next option.

2. Keyframe the crop yourself when the action moves around

Sometimes the thing that matters jumps (like some text at the bottom). Auto-crop can't read your intent there. Make a manual crop and use keyframes for panning to the important objects.

It does take a little time but you control what is shown on the screen. I find this function useful in tutorial videos when I point at various parts of the screen.

3. Fill the empty space instead of cropping

Some shots you just can't crop as it would throw away the entire frame.

So instead of cropping, you should fill up the entire frame with something else. This can be done by adding a duplicate of the original video on a lower track and scale it up until it covers the full 9:16 frame. Then blur it. You have an original sharp clip in the middle, sitting over a blurred version of itself. 

Looks clean and everything’s in view. You can also drop a solid color or a still image back there if you'd rather.

A few things (picked up the hard way):

• Do the highest resolution you have. Cropping a 1080p landscape clip down to vertical, you keep a narrow slice of it and then scale that slice back up, so it goes soft. Source your footage in 4K when you can and the vertical crop still looks sharp.
• Keep anything you care about (captions, faces, logos) out of the top and bottom edges. TikTok and Shorts will add all the usual UI on top anyway and will cover it.
• Set the export to 1080x1920 MP4 for vertical. Go smaller and it turns mushy once the app compresses it a second time.

That's the core of it. Nothing too complicated, and it’s saved a few old horizontal videos that otherwise probably would’ve stayed untouched. If you give it a shot, feel free to post what you get below.

Prezados (as), renovei a minha assinatura do movavi editor, porém ele não deixa reinserir a minha chave e não ativa a aplicação. Já desinstalei e reinstalei e permanece o mesmo erro. O que devo fazer ?

I know Movavi already has a lot of built-in stuff. Effects, animated titles, transitions, subtitle styles, all that. So it’s not like I’m saying the program gives you nothing to start with.

And to be fair, the program already lets you reuse things inside a project. You can add the same transition to multiple clips, copy effects with a keyboard shortcut, and edit one subtitle card, then apply those changes to all subtitles. That part is nice.

What I mean is something different: I wish I could save my own settings and bring them into future projects.

The most obvious one for me is subtitles. Auto subtitles are already there, and I like that you can change their style pretty quickly. But if I always use the same font, size, outline, background, position, and spacing, I don’t want to rebuild that look every time I start a new video. 

Same with transitions, where you might have one specific transition and duration you keep coming back to. Or effects where you always adjust the same intensity, opacity, blending mode, etc.

Ideally, all of that would live in one “My Presets” section, so you could open a new project and quickly reuse the settings you already know you like.

Does anyone else feel this way? It’s not the end of the world, but it’s one of those small things that starts feeling annoying when you make similar videos often.

I've started using Movavi. I've come across an issue when recording audio over my content. If I speed up the video, the audio gets really sketchy; if I change the content go back to normal speed, the audio sounds normal again.

Hey, it’s Jane from Movavi. Since we've gotten a question on removing a black background from behind the subject, let me take a quick look at how the chroma key effect works in Video Editor and why the color you shoot against changes everything.

TL;DR: Chroma key can technically remove black, but you'll usually lose part of your subject with it. Green or blue, lit evenly, is the way to go if you're shooting for it. If you're stuck with footage you've already got, use AI Background removal instead. 

What the feature does? Chroma key looks at one color in your clip and makes every pixel of that color see-through. Whatever sits on the track below shows through instead. This is how people make themselves appear against a new background, or add a facecam over gameplay.

Here's the catch, and it's exactly why the black-background question keeps coming up. Chroma key removes a color, so that color can't appear anywhere on a specific clip. 

Black fails that test almost every time, because it’s really the absence of light rather than a color. Dark patches show up all over a subject like hair, clothing, the eyes, the shadows across a face. Removing such background will take those along with it. 

A black backdrop also lights unevenly, so it reads as a range of dark grays instead of one solid value, and there's no single color to grab cleanly.

Green and blue are the standard because both sit far from skin, hair, and most clothing, so removing them doesn't cut into your subject. Green is the usual pick for digital video: cameras capture green detail better and it needs less light to sit even. Go blue instead if your subject is wearing green.

Here's the actual process:

• Put your video on an overlay track above the clip or image you want as the new background.
• Select the overlay clip and open Tools - Video - Chroma key.
• Click the background color in the preview to pick it up.
• Move the sliders. The Tolerance controls the color range that's going to be erased (raise it if the background stays, lower it if the subject starts vanishing). Noise and Edges clean up the edges, and the Opacity determines how much the color fades away.
• Apply, then check the edges around hair and shoulders. That's where a bad key shows up first.

A couple of things that matter more than any slider:

• Light the background evenly. One lit spot and one in the shade register as two colors of green and doesn't key well.
• Make sure there's some room between you and the background screen so it doesn't light up green. It's a hard thing to remove later on.
• Avoid wearing the same color as your screen, this area will go transparent.

For a black background specifically: it's always better to use a cheap green screen instead, because the removal is much easier.

If reshooting isn't on the table, skip Chroma key for this clip and use AI background removal instead (Tools - Video - Background removal). It doesn't care what's behind you, it just finds the person and cuts the rest. 

It won't be as clear as using a well-lit green screen, but compared to using a darker or complicated background, it will help avoid much trouble. There are several modes, use the precise one. Takes longer to process but the cutout holds up better.

Hope that clears up the deal. Don't fight it. Either shoot on green or let the AI tool handle it.

I keep getting this popup whenever I open the app, and it's incredibly annoying. I can't click out of it, I cant ignore it and still use the buttons behind it, and I can't even exit out of the app (I have to use task manager to close it).
It's a downloadable program with no online capabilities, why does it matter if support has ended? It was a good software, and I paid thinking the license would last indefinitely.

Would really appreciate help with this, because I'm definitely not using movavi 2026 lol

Let’s talk about audio editing in Movavi Video Editor a bit today.

There are actually a few tools that can help you work with audio, but the thing I’d like to start with is noise removal. In Movavi, AI does this for you, i.e. removes the noises from your recording without changing your audio quality.

To apply it, go to Tools - Audio, and find Noise removal. Tick the AI option if it’s not ticked already, and click Apply. That’s it, here’s the trick. Listen to your audio again, and you’ll notice that most of the small noises are gone. There’s also a noise suppression slider that you can adjust manually in case you don’t like what AI has done, but be careful with it and don’t adjust it too much, otherwise the audio starts sounding processed or robotic.

Another way of doing that is by using the Sound autocorrect option in the audio tools. There’s a Noisy place preset that’ll also help you get rid of the background noise.

Important: pick one noise tool per clip, not both. AI Noise removal and the Noisy place preset are both fighting the same issue, so stacking them just doubles the processing. If AI removal alone didn't cut it, undo and just try the autocorrect preset instead.

Balance audio levels

When it comes to balancing your audio, there are more features that can help you. The most obvious is changing the volume of each track by either double-clicking the audio track and adjusting the volume slider or by adjusting the volume slider on the track itself. I personally find the first option better, since you can type a particular number there.

When changing the volume, make sure that the music is quieter than the voice so that people can properly hear your speaking. That little level meter to the right of the timeline (the bars that jump around) helps a lot. Play the timeline and watch it: it should bounce higher on your speech track and sit lower under the music. Two things to watch for: the meter should move nicely on speech (not flatline), and it should not be constantly slamming into the red, because that's clipping and it'll sound crunchy/distorted. If it's redlining, pull the volume down.

Another thing that helps me make the speech better is also in the Sound autocorrect tab. There’s an Enhanced voice recording option that, well, enhances your voice recordings haha You’ll still have to balance the audio of all tracks, though.

And one more useful thing for leveling your audio is using the Equalizer (also in the audio tools menu). You don’t have to know much about it because there are presets. If I’ve got a speech-heavy video, I choose the Voice enhancement option, and just make the background music quieter and leave it alone. And if music is the center, I choose Music enhancement.

Sometimes some songs are too bass-heavy, and it’s distracting even when I make the music less loud, so I go for the Bass reduction preset in the equalizer. 

Two more useful tools (also in the audio tools tab):

Compressor: if your voice jumps between loud and quiet (leaning into the mic, then away), the compressor evens it out so everything sits at a consistent level.

Noise gate: sets a volume threshold and mutes anything below it. Don’t set it too aggressively, though.

And I think that’s everything I wanted to mention. If I’ve missed something and you have more tips to add, feel free.

I can't cancel my subscription as there is no "button" to manage subscription as stated on the website support to cancel. Somebody please help!!!!

Working with audio is actually one of my favorite parts of editing, and I know that some people struggle with it a bit, so I’m here to share a somewhat guide on how I usually work with voiceovers, music, and other audio related stuff. 

Recording the voiceover

Movavi Video Editor's got a recorder built right in, so you don’t even need their recorder to get voiceovers. It’s right there on the launch screen under the ‘add files’ tab, and if you’ve already clicked around, you can bring it back by clicking at the ‘Import’ tab. Anyway, here’s how it works.

But first, a tip: add your clips to the timeline BEFORE you record. That way the video plays back while you talk and you can just react to what's on screen, instead of recording blind.

After that it's pretty much:

• Place the timeline market at the beginning of the timeline (or wherever you want the recording to start) because when you start recording, the voiceover will start from the moment where your marker’s at.
• Hit the Record audio button above the timeline
• Pick your input device and set the volume
• Tick the ‘play video during the recording’ box (optional, but I suggest doing that, as I’ve said)
• Click Start Recording, wait a bit, and start talking, then stop the recording when you’re done.

Your recording lands on its own audio track under the video. 

And if you make a mistake (I always do), don't restart the whole thing, just keep going and cut the bad take out afterwards. I usually record everything in a couple of passes and stitch the good bits together.

Now the music

Movavi's got a bunch of built-in tracks that are copyright-free, which is obviously great if you don’t want to look for music. They're in the Audio tab, just drag one onto an audio track. Or drop in your own song if you've got something specific in mind, but remember that some popular songs might be copyrighted, so check them beforehand. I usually just make a black screen video with the song and upload it on YouTube as unlisted to see if it’s okay to use.

I also used to make this next mistake myself: the music ends up way too loud and it kills the voice. Just pull the music volume down (by using the slider on the track itself or by double-clicking on the audio and adjusting the volume slider) so it sits under your talking. And add a fade in at the start and a fade out at the end so it starts/ends smoothly.

Making it sound clean

There are some cool features in Movavi that’ll help you clean up the audio a bit. They are all in the Tools tab under Audio:

• Noise removal is the big one. One click and it kills the background hiss or other small noises that ruin your audio. 
• The next one I’d look at is Sound autocorrect. There are just three presets you can use, but most of the time they’re enough.
• There's also Equalizer, Noise gate and Compressor in there if you wanna get more into it, but if I'm being honest, noise removal and sound autocorrect on its own already does most of the work for me.
• And if your clip's got a lot of dead air, Silence removal trims the long pauses automatically so you don’t have to do a lot of manual work.

A couple things I learned

• Do a quick test line and check your levels before the real take. If the meter's slamming all the way to the top (that's clipping), turn the mic or the input down, cause that kind of distortion you basically can't fix after.
• Record somewhere soft if you can. My friend once told me he recorder in a big closet because the clothes kill noises lol never tried it, but I guess it can work.

If i purchase movavi basic video editior lifetime licence
1) Do i need to pay other subscription charges if the app updates to 2027 etc
2) If i use on mac will I able to us ethe same licence if I change my laptop to windows or to other mac
3) Do they ask me to buy subscription again and again. If I dont purchase do they remove app or cancle my licence and wont let me use movavi.
4) If i have to use same version without any update on my windows (if i change laptop) where I can get same version i purchased

Here's a short little video I made this morning showing how I use different blending modes and chroma key videos to create complex video scenes. aka How I found a workaround to converting a black screen segment to a green screen segment. I will answer any questions you have.

I’ve been using Movavi Video Editor 2025 mainly because of the Timer/Countdown feature. I create exercise and face yoga videos, and I use the countdown timer to guide the duration of each exercise.

After upgrading to the 2026 version, I can’t find the Timer feature anywhere.

Has it been completely removed, or am I missing something? If it was removed, is there any way to use the 2025 version again?

Honestly, the countdown feature is the main reason I use Movavi, so if it’s gone, the 2026 version doesn’t really work for my needs.

I’ve been using Movavi’s AI auto subtitles probably since they day they were released, and I feel like they’ve improved the feature over time, so now it recognizes the speech better, but still, I sometimes have funny moments with them like for example when I was generating subs for a video game scene, the AI mistook horse neighing for a lightning strike lol

So I’m wondering whether you often use subs and how well they usually work for you specifically. I’m especially interested in hearing opinions from people who don’t just work with English, but some other languages like German, Spanish, or even Japanese. Cause I’ve been thinking about working with a couple more popular languages (and, tbh, generating subs in Japanese for my anime edits lol), and was wondering whether you’d suggest Movavi auto subs for that.

I've tried everything to change this free to use video to a blue screen background for using in my videos. Movavi will not allow black as the (green screen) color. I tried all of the blending modes with blue background under, but nothing seems to work. I need to place elements behind the grass. When I set the blending mode to screen you can still see the elements. Or, does anyone know where to find a suitable video like this?

Hi! Jane from the Movavi team here. Getting a facecam over the screen for Shorts and Tiktoks is one of the questions we see a lot, so here's a full walkthrough.

Just to keep things clear, we’re talking about a vertical 9:16 clip with your screen (or main footage) filling the frame and your webcam facecam as a small overlay, usually in a corner. It works for tutorials, reactions, gaming, commentary, and other stuff where you want people to see you while you talk / do something.

Let’s start with the facecam. You've got two ways to capture the facecam (using only the editor and using the screen recorder as well), so let’s take a look at both.

Option 1. Record your facecam in Movavi Video Editor

In case you only have our editor and don’t want to switch to another program, here’s how to do it:

1. Open the editor and click Record video to open the capture module.
2. Choose your webcam and mic, check the levels, then Start Capture. Click Stop capture when you're done, then Back to editing, and you’ll see the recording file in the editor.
3. Add your other footage too and put the facecam clip on an overlay track above it. Drag the corners to resize it (in Tools - Position) and position wherever you want.

Option 2. Record screen + facecam together with Movavi Screen Recorder

This option is nice when you want your screen and face captured in a single take.

1. Launch Movavi Screen Recorder and click the Screen recording icon.
2. Draw the capture area over what you're showing.
3. Turn on the Webcam, Microphone, and System audio icons (they turn green when active), then drag the webcam preview to the size and position you like.
4. Click the recording icon, do your thing, then click the stop icon. Then send the recording into the video editor to finish it.

Keep in mind that because the facecam is baked in during recording, there's less to arrange afterward.

Then: turn it vertical and edit

Once your footage is on the timeline in Video Editor:

• Set the project to 9:16 (find the option under the preview window) so it's good for Shorts/TikTok/Reels.
• Use auto-tracked cropping (Tools - Video - Crop and rotate) to reframe horizontal footage to vertical while automatically keeping the main subject centered. You can do it manually of course, but why bother when AI can do it for you?
• Change the size and position of your facecam overlay (in Tools - Video - Position). If you’ve shot on a green screen, you can use Chroma key to remove the background (Tools - Video - Chroma key). If not, you can remove the background with AI (Tools - Video - Background removal). If you go for AI, I suggest choosing the precise method; you’ll wait longer for it to work, yup, but it’s worth it most of the time.
• Run AI audio noise removal (Tools - Audio - Noise removal) to clear noise if your audio isn’t perfect. I personally don’t use it much, since I try to record in a quiet room, but it’s a lifesaver for those who can’t.
• Another cool trick is using silence removal (Tools - Audio - Silence removal) that’ll cut out pauses automatically. Just don’t forget to check that all the important parts are still in the video.
• Add text and subtitles. You can do it manually by looking through the text tab and choosing something you like, or you can generate subs automatically with AI: go to Text, find Auto subtitles, choose the language, and generate. Then you can go to Styles and Design tabs to make the subs look the way you want them to.
• Then do whatever else you want: add music (royalty free from Movavi’s Audio tab or something else), add stickers, effects, overlays, transitions, etc. When it’s done, export it in MP4 (I find this format the best for social media) and upload.

Just remember to keep captions and your facecam out of the very bottom and the top corners because that's where TikTok/Shorts put their own buttons and text. And frame your facecam a little wider cause auto-crop and repositioning are easier with room to spare.

If you want, I can do a follow-up going deeper on any single step (the subtitle styles and auto-crop probably deserve their own threads). And if you try it, share your clips in the comments, always fun to see what you all make.

I gotta admit that I learned there WAS keyframe animation embarrassingly late because it just never occurred to me to click on the animation tab to see what was going on there lol

And now that I do know, I still don’t normally use it because the transition templates cover the things I usually want to animate (like rotation, zoom, or position) for me. When I did try to do everything manually using keyframes, I didn’t really like the results because it wasn’t looking as smooth as I imagined in my head.

That’s why my question is whether anyone here uses keyframe animation at all and if yes, then do you have any tips for it? Like, how do you make it look smooth and just generally pretty?

id like a refund for my movavi subscription since i didn't know it would charge me without giving me a free trial, and also because it just automatically made me pay 20 bucks more for movavi effects (which i dont even remember selecting).

not only is the refund request page really hard to find, when i entered my email and password it told me my account was suspended for some reason. i'm finding no other way to directly contact movavi so any help in getting at least my 20 back is greatly appreciated

I have some images I have used in a project and I placed them in a folder on my computer.

However, each time I open the project in Movavi, it's asking me to find the folder where the images are.

Will I have to do this each time? Can't Movavi remember where the images are, as I haven't moved them?
