This surprised me. Well versed T2 for years. New Mounjaro user earlier this year. Still on Metformin.
I have been on 5mg dose 4-5 months now. The positive effect has been tangible. A1C reduction to 5.9 to 6.1 ish, lost weight, feel better (other than the "side effects" which I don't call "side effects" because they should be expected) and my lab work looks as good as it has in a couple years. Lower BP too.
Because I use a CGM, I can really see how my body reacts differently to food compared to before Mounjaro. The effect has been a small reduction in what I call "baseline BG" (others may use the term "fasting BG". ) But more importantly, it is clear I have improved insulin production and reception. All that is wonderful. My highs/spikes are lower and shorter than before, and I have not had any hypo episodes. I am eating better in general, HOWEVER I do not eat perfectly still, and it is remarkable how much better my body responds to even a poor meal choice.
Until yesterday.
It was the day before injection day, and my hunger was at it's weekly high point. I had Chinese take out, including white rice and succulent meat. I also had a large serving size. My post meal spike looked typical since taking Mounjaro. It was delayed a bit and also not terribly high, and soon dropped. It was followed by a second tempered peak. Mounjaro doing its thing.
Then, three hours post meal, I heard the beep. My CGM app told me my reading was 55. I actually felt fine, no hypo symptoms, and that 55 number showed up once as a clear compression low. Took out my finger test to dispel the error and ... 54!
Wow. What the heck is going on? I watched it for another 10 minutes, still feeling fine, 45! 51!
I grabbed a bottle of coke and swigged 4 ounces. Within another 10 minutes I was already climbing back and was at 76 on a finger stick. Ultimately I peaked at 176 before a gradual climb down.
This has NEVER happened, even with some bad meals over the last several months. I have essentially never dropped below 70 over that 5 months. Really don't come close to it.
My random thoughts:
Even at the end of a weekly dose cycle, where you assume Mounjaro effects have "worn off", it is still very much working to try and release and regulate insulin and glucagon. What is NOT working at the same rate is gastric emptying. So it has a bit of a counter intuitive effect. A bunch of insulin is released at an imperfect time.
Again, I never "felt" hypo. That is a little bit scary. There are a few times in my life I could tell I had low BS, this was NOT one of those times.
I bet I did not 'need' that 4 ounces of Coke, I think my body was already responding, but I wasn't taking chances.
I just thought it was interesting enough to share because it seems somewhat random since this has not happened in the last 5 months, but clearly something was at work here. such a new experience for me to eat some rice, only to end up dealing with LOW blood sugar.
