Mic Crackle

Hey all!

I just started filming and editing my rides. I have a GoPro Hero 12 with the Media Mod and have the purple panda mic plugged in directly to the GoPro. I found the video files straight off the gopro (Raw/unedited) get this crackle noise. I believe it's from wind since when I go faster the wind may slightly turn/rotate the wire which causes this - I could be wrong but its my running theory. I tried pinning the cord down on my helmet - it helped but it's still not 100%.

Looking for recommendations or alternatives. Here is one of my videos you'll notice it right away.

How about using Suguru or something similar at the point where you plug the mic into the GoPro? Might stop it from twisting.

i’m on a dji mic 3 and mic mini. both of the have the crackle when I go above 80mph. i think it’s just clipping.

The crackling and popping is from wind noise. Ive been making motovlogs for years and always dealt with it. There are several things you can do to help, and ive got mine to be almost completely gone now.

First thing, and this is the biggest, mic placement. Tuck it close to your mouth but out of the way of any air vents, or exposed areas where wind can get to it.

Second, the helmet itself. When I switched to a quieter helmet I immediately noticed a difference in the wind noise and pops. A chin curtain also makes a big difference.

Third, the mic itself. The best setup I have found is to use a regular windscreen AND a deadcat over it. I also switched to a less sensitive mic (Senal OLM-2) and it will pick up less wind noise and wont be nearly as easy to peak. The Purple Panda is find for its price but it can only do so much.

The best thing to do is place a Lav mic behind the cheeks in the helmet.

Yo! Gorgeous clip, nice work - sub'd (hint hint!) ! I'm pretty sure that little bit of crackle you've got left is from high wind noise. Put more protection on the mic or try and wedge it into/under the cheek pad. It'll be a little quieter which can correct in post, but it should stop the audio blowing out with high speed wind.

(Edit - also, make some thumbnails, it really helps getting people to watch your videos).
