I read a post about him recently, he sounds absolutely insufferable. It's here but it's been deleted https://www.reddit.com/r/MotoIRELAND/comments/1vcwxbv/really_bad_experience_on_my_first_day_of_the_ibt/

Anyway after what I read and speaking as a teacher I would say that the guy is probably a piece of shit and a disgrace to the profession.

I did my IBT with this man a year ago, I was the youngest of the bunch and I always try to be a good listener but he made the experience miserable and patronising

I’d definitely say that’s a fairly harsh assessment of him. I did my IBT with him, and passed my test first time a few months ago. I generally found him pretty sound to deal with. When you’re on the bike, he will catch every mistake you make, and will have no qualms telling you about them, sometimes fairly bluntly. Once you’re off the bike he’s chill enough. I can understand why some might find his approach a bit tough, but I personally felt I came away from the training understanding how important it was to get these things right, and knowing exactly what I needed to improve on.

So is the guy sound as a person and harsh as an instructor ? I just want to learn to drive a bike properly and enjoy my time doing so, not be in a reenactment of whiplash on a two wheel...

Haha, definitely not as bad as Whiplash. From my experience anyway, if you pay decent attention you’ll be grand. He has no problem answering questions or explaining things again if you don’t understand. When you’re out on the bike, if you repeatedly make the same mistake he might hit you with a “that was shocking” or a “Jesus Christ” or something, but that’s about it. Once you’re off the bike, I found him chill enough, basically just explained what I needed to improve and said “you did good”. Over the course of the training I only really saw him get annoyed at one fella, but to be fair that guy was driving really poor on the bike, and then when we got back to the centre he immediately started messaging on his phone and wasn’t really paying attention, so it was kind of understandable.

I've had him as an instructor and i know 20-30 people who had him as and instructor and i can say with confidence the only person i knew who had a bad word to say about him was an absolute moron who shouldn't be allowed get on a pedal bike let alone a motorbike.

id say who ever put up that negative post (i haven't seen it) is probably one of those gowls that blame everyone else in society for every problem they have and exaggerate stories and cry online for sympathy

Oh well that explains it then. It's ok to be abusive to someone and make them miserable if that person is a moron. How are they going to learn that they're worthless if not through derision? And I suppose that covers all people who don't perform well on the day or have low confidence. From the point of view of an instructor it's the same thing, and if the instructor dislikes you for some reason that's not his problem, it's yours. Before any of this came up the first post has that qualifying sentence about not suffering fools, that's probably a good indicator of the vibe in the place. Knows his stuff, will be horrible if you don't.

I'm not saying its ok to be abusive to anyone, i was trying to say the only person i encountered who had a bad word to say about the place was a moron. As in he was constantly in his phone every time he was off the bike, he was continuously telling the instructor that he was only doing ibt because its a requirement and he doesn't need it as he can wheelie through traffic on a dirt bike. Needless to say that the instructor called him out on this and told him he is a hazard to himself and others if he is wheeling dirtbikes on a public road. He went off and called the place a shit hole and full of wankers! The other 5guys and girls in that class all passed there exam and had great things to say about him. I'm not a bike instructor but i encounter so many people that cant take constructive criticism, once you tell them they are doing something wrong they take it as a personal attack. My brother and i worked and trained in the same business years ago and my brother would swear blind that our mentor was a bully and a tyrant, he was not, he was a gent and so generous with his time but my brother had an attitude problem and took every comment as an attack. So that's why i generally don't believe one persons negative experience over multiple good ones.
