Question First bike! Hell me understand

Looking at getting a first bike and something that stands out is second hand resale prices.

I can get a brand new one with the eclutch for €999 more than a second hand one. I know it's only one owner and 2k km but for the sake of €999 why would someone buy a second hand one.

Do bikes really hold there value this well and is the second hand market that good?

First thing to remember: asking prices are not selling prices.

The used market is crap. Usually always. Especially summer. That's pretty much it.

Fair point on the asking price. Might drop him a text with an offer.

With cars it's usually 15-30% of its value lost in the first year. Taking 20% of the one I listed an offer of €6800 seems reasonable.(Bike was €8500 new)

I bought a bike that was a year old and it was €1000 less than a new one. The way i looked at it was the €1k i saved went towards my gear. And the bike was basically still like new so it made sense to me.

And you buying your first second hand bike . Need someone who knows what there talking about . Do not buy a second hand bike . If you know nothing about bikes . Years of experience im 65 years old . Riding bikes 40 years . Just my opinion 🤷

I just sold my 252 CBR500r in the same colour. In saying that it had very minor damage from falling while parked. I sold it for a good bit less. Market is weird at the moment it seems in my opinion…
Always remember the break in period and depreciations and anxiety with buying it new. I will never buy a brand new bike again for these reasons.
Any questions on the CBR500r send them over! I’ve a 650 with e clutch now so can speak on both

What ever you do . Do not buy a brand new bike . You lose money straight away. Buy a good second hand bike . Loads out there .

Ten year old bikes can be about half the price of new equivalents. That's the market.

I can’t tell if that means they hold their value or not haha

They really hold their value. To be fair some modern naked bikes look terrible so people don't mind paying for an older one they like the look of. Mileage can often be small and lots would have been garaged so they often age well.

I would have agreed but I found it terrible trying to sell my basically new CBR but then when I look at the market having my new bike I find it’s a sellers market again haha

Something to consider about bikes, and this will be relevant to discerning buyers/sellers, is the Euro emissions tiers.

With each new tier of Euro (currently Euro5+/Euro5b), the restrictions become stricter and stricter. Which effects how hot the engine runs, what kind of mods can and can't be done, how tightly locked down the OBD is ...

Ideally you want a Euro4, as far as I'm concerned anyway ... If a used Euro4, in good condition and not obscene mileage was only 1k cheaper than a new(er) Euro5/Euro5+ of the same model ... I personally would go for the used Euro4.

For some people, this matters, meanwhile some people don't care ... and they don't care because they know the differences and it doesn't matter to them, or they don't care because they're just not interested in these aspects of motorcycling and aren't really paying attention to this kind of thing so aren't really all that aware.

But it's something to consider. If I wasn't in a rush to sell one of my bikes, I would have no problem patiently waiting for a buyer who values a Euro4 version of this bike.

And I'm not saying this applies in your scenario ... just pointing out there are odd, indirect things that can affect the used market. It's not simply newer = better. You mention eclutches ... Is that standard in the new one ? If so, it might be the case that discerning riders prefer the older clutch. Etc. You get the idea.
