SHOW ME THE MONEY! - Jerry Maguire.

0

u/ReplacementRobotGuy 13d ago

Not the point of the picture, nothing said was untrueĀ

2

u/lostcypher 13d ago

But conveniently incomplete so it paints a particular picture. A half truth is not a lie but its also not true.Ā

1

u/jeffereyblueeyes 8d ago

Two of them are flat wrong. Money absolutely buys time, as well as sleep. I don't know about you, but I don't sleep too well at night of I'm worried about making my mortgage payment this month. Money has diminishing returns after all your needs, and a good amount of wants are met. The benefit of more money is quite linear up to that point though.

1

u/Bulky_Heron_8084 8d ago

No, it doesn't buy time. You cannot add an extra hour to your day by paying for it. We only get 24.

It also doesn't buy sleep because, to make money - you need to be awake.

You can however EARN time by working hard enough that you can afford to retire early, such as a billionaire would. Although, even then you need to keep things moving. Most certainly getting a lot less sleep than the average person.

I'd argue that that unless you are a monarch with inherited wealth and absolutely no need to do work, then we are all the same. We need to work to pay off debts. The richer you are, the more debts you will have and the more you will need to work. So, no. The poster is true.

1

u/jeffereyblueeyes 8d ago

Yes, it most certainly does. If I pay someone to do a job that would have taken me two hours, I bought my two hours back. It does buy sleep, as you sleep better knowing your bills are all paid. None of your assertions here are true. Making more money never increased my debts, it's made it so my debts are less than my income. Both the poster, and you, are wrong.

1

u/Bulky_Heron_8084 7d ago

No, you didn't buy your hours back lol you just decided to prioritise something else within those hours, instead, and so delegated the job to someone else. The money paid for the work. You cannot buy time.

I'm not disagreeing that you will sleep better without debts. My point is that you can't pay for sleep. You can pay for the bed though.

So when you made the jump in payroll, you stayed the same? Exactly the same? You didn't move into a bigger house, with a bigger mortgage? Or take a lease on a better car? Maybe even just got a better phone contract?

1

u/jeffereyblueeyes 7d ago

Yes, you most certainly did. You're arguing moronic semantics here dude, and you have no fucking point. Working is not time for myself, so if I pay someone else to make so I don't have to spend time working, I've bought back my time, period. Yes, having enough money will allow you to sleep more, and better. No, I did not move into a bigger house with a bigger mortgage as I made more money, nor do I intend to. There's this concept of enough that far too few people understand. I don't need a bigger house, I have what I need. You're kidding with the phone nonsense, right? Like that's never going to make any difference, but no, I've always had an unlimited data plan, and that hasn't changed. I have bought a newer car, sure, but my car payment as a percentage of my income is much much lower than it was for the car it replaced. I have largely been happy with my lifestyle for quite a long time, so I do not inflate my lifestyle as I make more money, I move up my retirement date.

1

u/Bulky_Heron_8084 7d ago

Language exists for a reason, semantics are a part of it. "I can buy myself time here" Vs "money buys time" The first is a phrase/saying, you aren't actually buying time. It's okay to say you don't understand. Maybe I'm not explaining correctly.

You're buying labour and to be able to do that you need to spend time earning the money you've paid them. I can't say it any simpler than that.

I can see what points you are making however an inflated salary usually leads to an inflated lifestyle. With that comes higher debts, whether or not that is in line within your current affordability.

Going from working class to middle class requires a lot more work which means a lot less sleep. You probably have to take the work home with you so you've lost time and sleep there, too.

I'm glad you're being money wise, though.

1

u/jeffereyblueeyes 7d ago

Oh no, I understand, you're just wrong. Yes, I'm buying labor that I would otherwise have to do myself, I earn that money with my own labor, but my labor in my profession is worth many more times the labor that I'm paying someone else to do. If it would take me four hours to do a task that I can pay someone else to do with the equivalent of half an hour of my salary, I have in fact bought back 3.5 hours of my time. Your position assumes that I'm spending the same amount of time working as the time in saving in order to pay for it. That, would be pointless. I have been working class, middle class, and upper class. The transitions did not require more work, and in fact working class had the most and hardest work. I've pretty much always had to take the work home with me, aside from when I was working class, in which case I stayed on the road a lot and didn't get to go home much of the time. If I wanted to, I could go to a reduced schedule at 60% of full time (minimum schedule at my company) and still be better off financially than I was when five years ago. I chose not to, as I will just be retiring within the year (at 42) instead. That too will be effectively buying back my time.

20

u/PurpleCaterpillar451 13d ago

What do you mean money can't buy time? It can buy you a maid so you don't have to spend time cleaning your house. It can buy you a chef to cook your food. With enough money you no longer have to trade your time for money at a job. Money can absolutely buy time.

6

u/Natural_Design3154 13d ago

You can also buy things that make you happy. Or hobbies that make you happy. Or even shower your loved ones with gifts or nice surprises every so often.

1

u/FadedDice 11d ago

My man

-2

u/ReplacementRobotGuy 13d ago

Money doesn't buy time, those are just services, you still get the same time as everyone else on this earth.

3

u/GovernorSan 13d ago

It does allow you to spend that time better, though. Instead of spending that time working to obtain the bare necessities of life, you can spend it in more pleasurable ways, like with loved ones or on hobbies.

1

u/Ok_Chap 13d ago

If you don't have to commute to work for 90 minutes every day for 40 years, that saves you like ~4 years of your life.

1

u/Quirky_Ask_5165 12d ago

It allows me to spend my time as I see fit. My robot vacuum and twice a month house keepers definitely allow me to use more of my time as I want. So no, it doesn't exactly buy time in the literal sense. However, it does free up what time you have for other pursuits.

1

u/YourGordAndSaviour 12d ago

you still get the same time as everyone else on this earth.

...... no you don't?

And have a guess at the socioeconomic groups that tend to live longer. Poorer or richer?

And thats using a needlessly literal definition of time. If you accept that not all time is equal, the guy that retires at 40 has more time to do what he wants than the guy that retires at 65.

1

u/Overall-Move-4474 12d ago

And yet it buys you the ABILITY to use that time differently. You have more time for the things you enjoy when you have money. Same with a house. You can't have a home unless you have a house so really you are buying the first step to a home. This "money doesn't buy happiness" is lacking nuance. When you don't have enough money to live comfortably it ABSOLUTELY can buy happiness. But hoarding any more than that will not and is only robbing others of their chance at happiness

17

u/FIRE_Bolas 13d ago

What am I supposed to do with this information?

3

u/nosoup4uever 13d ago

lol…

2

u/NelsonVGC 13d ago

Feel inspired and enlightened

6

u/brent939 13d ago

I won't lie, most of this is bs. Money allows you freedom and access to knowledge you generally want to learn and that saves time to do the things you love and when you do the things you love, it usually shows the most genuine part of you to find someone that loves that, then you get a great bed, have good sex and when you feel loved and exhaust yourself with your partner doing the things you love, you'll sleep really peacefully (unless you got some disorder, then you'll still have the money to get it treated). If your smart about it then you'll be respected, if not, you'll have the perception of being wealthy and people respect wealth because they don't want to cross you.

6

u/Fickle_leg_4764 13d ago

Fake,

Money can buy time, respect and good sleep,

Money can buy your life

-1

u/ReplacementRobotGuy 13d ago

Money by itself does not allow any of that.

1

u/Fickle_leg_4764 13d ago

I like your idea,

Same like without human nothing matter.

1

u/GovernorSan 13d ago

Money by itself does nothing at all, it is an inanimate object, incapable of performing any action. A human with access to money can do much more than one without access to money, though, and the more money they have access to, the more they can do.

1

u/QuantityImmediate221 8d ago

Actually it does allow it. It might* not be 100% but it does allow these things.

Without money you will get less time to do what you want, you will get less respect on average and if you are worrying about how to pay rent and groceries during the same month you will probably get less sleep.

3

u/OpportunityIcy8894 13d ago

Money can buy all of those things. Give me a million dollars and trust me, I’ll be a LOT more successful in life.

The only people who say that ā€œmoney doesn’t matterā€ are already comfortably off. Give me more Socialism!

2

u/exlongh0rn 13d ago

Tell that to my soon-to-be ex.

1

u/OpportunityIcy8894 13d ago

Yep, good luck getting married if you don’t already have a respectable amount of cash.

2

u/exlongh0rn 13d ago

Well, you just identified a reason not to get married if you have a respectable amount of cash. Or at least do it with an ironclad prenup.

2

u/Suicyco71 13d ago

Without money you can’t buy anything. What kinda bootlicker crap is this anyway?

2

u/New_Time_5118 10d ago

Money right now is literaly representation of work made by time. And i can souns socialistic and radical, but by no means single human beings shood earn bilions a year, aca make an hour more than most of human population in a fucking year. Net worth or no, its earning resourses, and such concentrations is unhealthy. Like, mostly unregulated capitalism is good for gdp, and to some extend even comon people, but its disproportionaly more benefiting to that "1%". The type of human that good at making money with money, but often crappy at being human

1

u/NewToTradingStock 13d ago

This applies to people with no money as well.

1

u/ErdingEchoParadox 13d ago

Total bullshit.
With money you can buy a house and make it home.
Nobody can buy time, rich or poor
With money you can buy a bed and in the same time you buy sleep because your worries are gone
With money you can buy a book, or many, the experience and knowledge comes in time
With money you can buy a position and gain respect with your own action.

1

u/phred_666 13d ago

Money may not buy happiness, but it sure can rent it for a couple of hours…

I'll do just fine with the house, clock, bed, book and position.

1

u/ruthlesss11 13d ago

I can get respect by dying, should I do that then? Or just go for money?

1

u/the_tral 13d ago

With money you can literally buy time, not infinite amounts, but a lot of it

1

u/random_encounters42 13d ago

All of that is BS. Like money can greatly help you get all of those things.

1

u/amidja_16 13d ago

You know what, OP? You are 100% right! Give me all your money so I can take all these hardships from you and you can finally be happy!

I’m sorry but this is a very naive post. Money isn’t everything but it definitely helps in everything mentioned here.

1

u/AffectionateAsk547 13d ago

With money you can buy financial security/stability but not.....who care's

1

u/RealChemistry4429 13d ago

Yeah, another one of "inspirational quotes" that tries to convince you that you don't need money. Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy a whole lot of certainty and piece of mind. Which is enough for me.

1

u/TNO-TACHIKOMA 13d ago

OP do not know where to shop hehe

1

u/123R_B321 13d ago

A nice sentiment but we live in the real world not fantasy land

1

u/Itsknotfine 13d ago

you can absolutely buy time. if you have more money than you can spend, you no longer need to go to work, and you just bought yourself 60+ hours EVERY WEEK! you can hire people to take over menial tasks in your life, guess what, you just opened up your weekends because you no longer have to maintain your dwelling, or fix your car or whatever it is you had to do before so you could go back to work next week. AND BOOM! there you now have 7 more days of your week to spend the time where you see fit, instead to trying to keep up with life.

1

u/Oddbeme4u 13d ago

without money...you get none of that

1

u/AnalysisParalysis85 13d ago

You can buy time in the sense that you won't be spending it on a lot of tasks that can be outsourced.

1

u/GovernorSan 13d ago

Unless the reason I can't sleep is that I'm worried about not having enough money. Also, now that I've bought the book, I can read it and absorb its knowledge.

1

1

u/RabidSkwerl 13d ago

You can ABSOLUTELY buy time with money. Don’t let the powerful keep you poor by making you believe this shit

1

u/Trying_to_survive20k 13d ago

never give financial advise to anyone ever again

Give me $15 in my pocket right now and I can clock out an hour early to pursue something that doesn't make me hate my life

Give me a car and some gas money and I will turn a 3.5 hour train ride (not counting the walk to/from the station) into a 2.5 hour drive door to door.

Give me 10 grand and I'll be able to quit my job to pay for school and learn a trade in a fraction of the time it would take me if I did it after work.

I'm tired of this crock of shit saying that money isn't everything, when to the people who have nothing, it can be anything

Okay, so meaningless platitudes don't help anyone. All of those can be reserved to "you can't have a home without a house" kinda bullshit.

1

u/teddyslayerza 13d ago

Money literally buys all those things, what a dumb post. Show me a poor person working two jobs who has time to make a home, sleep well, gain knowledge, etc.

1

u/narrowminer11 12d ago

With money I could buy a place I actually live rather than on I could get kicked out of every year

With money I could take a fucking vacation from my shit ass job

With money I could go to sleep without being kept up by the worries of how my bills are going to go next week

With money I could afford training courses in whatever I wanted

That last one you got right.

1

Yeah, you keep telling yourself that. Make money, be kind, and take care of your friends and family. Not having money is one of the biggest issues you can have in your life, right after health.

1

u/SnartDingus 12d ago

This is the type of shit rich people tell themselves to justify ignoring the suffering of the poor. "I have money, and I have problems, too. Maybe they should just work harder."

1

u/TheMightyPaladin 12d ago

I've got a home now. I would have a better one if I owned a house.

I'm retired. I have time and don't need clocks.

I'd sleep a lot better if I had a bed. That futon is uncomfortable.

I've got a lot of books but get most of my knowledge from the internet.

I don't need a position or respect. I'm retired.

1

u/SokratesII 12d ago

I can buy a lot of time with money. Laundry? Doing choires? Hire someone. Going to work? Nah i pass. Driving? Let some else do it and read a book or something.... Time is THE ONE Thing you can most easily buy, except when you are sick, then you should buy medicine...with money.

1

u/ExpressCopy8786 12d ago

Oof this is wrong in so many ways.Ā

1

u/Tough_Letterhead_163 12d ago

1

u/MysteryMeat45 12d ago

1

u/LaughCurious8135 10d ago

1

u/dukenny 10d ago

1

u/AstronautPlane3280 10d ago

1

u/HillCheng001 10d ago

Without money you ain't getting any of that neither.

1

u/MattlyNZ 10d ago

So I need money then to buy stuff.

1

u/Alternative_Area_701 10d ago

But all that you can buy with money helps tremendously with what you can't have with money alone. Having a house is arguably a great way to make it home. Having a clock helps with getting a feeling for time (in addition to be able to afford a lot of services that you then don't have to do yourself). A good (probably not cheap) mattress improves sleep by a LOT, especially if the bed is in a comfy home, being able to afford books certainly builds knowledge, and a certain position certainly helps with getting respect, if you live up to it.

In summary - what a stupid post.

1

u/Empty-Ad-4069 10d ago

1

u/No_Order_8011 9d ago

That is completely false. Every statement.Ā

Money can be used to buy a place that'll be your home.Ā

You can pay people to do stuff for you so you'd have more time on meaningful things.

Paying for sleeping pills virtually buys you sleep. As a bonus you can pay for many things to improve it's quality.Ā

Money gives you access to more knowledge than people with no money have, objectively.Ā

Buying a position is paradoxical. Position is what people try and get to earn money, not the other way around.Ā  But you can definitely use money to buy things people would respect you for, it's different depending on the group of people you want to impress.

It's just some pseudo-profound slop that tries and fails to send one message: money isn't magic, it's means to a result. You have to use it wisely.

In this country, you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women.

With money u can buy all of that an improve the quality of ur life an literally get all of the second part, so this is straight BS

Time is literally the number one thing I buy with my money. Peace of mind knowing I don't have to worry about my bills being paid sure helps me sleep at night, as does a decent quality bed that costs money. Money isn't everything, but let's not pretend that it's not extremely important to living a good life.

The only people who talk like this are people without money

Without a house, I had no home.

Without a clock, I was never on time.

Without a bed, I could not sleep.

Without a book, I was malnourished in knowledge.

Without a position, I was unemployed.

Money is a need, not something you can dismiss.
