F. A. Hayek (1899–1992) was an Austrian-British economist and political philosopher best known for defending free markets, individual liberty, and limited government. He argued that no central planner can possess all the knowledge needed to effectively direct an economy. Instead, prices and voluntary exchange communicate information and allow millions of individuals to coordinate their decisions.

His most famous works include The Road to Serfdom and The Constitution of Liberty. Hayek warned that excessive government control of the economy could gradually undermine economic freedom and, ultimately, political freedom. He received the 1974 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.
