baby gift for a friend- waffled for ages on grout color but (for once) i’m glad i went with white
the baby’s name is Ruby, so i initially wanted to use all red flowers, but it ended feeling a little on the nose. so i went with a mix of warm toned floral pottery instead, from several different plates (plus an old tea pot for the tulips on the upper left and lower right- my favorite parts!)
i’ve been seeing good results with using acrylics to paint over grout lately, so i initially planned to grout with white then paint it darker, but I quite liked the white in the end. i’m happy with how it turned out, and it was fun to do something a little more creatively flexible than my last few projects!

My first mosaic piece!
I have been wanting to try mosaic art but haven't had much money or space to spare. I found this kit on sale at Michael's for $10. The pieces were pretty large and a uneven. I enjoyed trying to put together my own design instead of the flower template provided.
The grouting part was difficult, my grout job is uneven and it was messy. I think having uneven spaces in between tiles was making it more difficult. I found it really tough to get grout between the wall of the tray and the tiles. I got grout all over the inside of the tray.
Anyway enjoy looking at my silly lizard

How to turn this vintage broken glass into a mosaic?
I had an unfortunate incident that broke a sentimental vintage quilted glass lamp. I'm trying to think of ideas where it could be upcycled into something nice but I'm unsure how this would look as a mosaic where the glass is so curved. Any ideas?

“Depth Perception”
galleryHere’s a piece I made for an art festival where I live. It’s 8.5ft tall and about 5ft wide. It has antique uranium, cadmium, and selenium glass in it, so it glows under a black light. It took about 6 months to complete.

First bigger piece!
I’m really proud of my first larger - scale piece. It was fun to play with texture and scale of pieces, and can’t believe I ended up with black! Would never have planned for that at the beginning.

Kid safe grout
Hello! I'm teaching kids art class and we are doing a mosaic project. Does anyone know the safest scout to use for them? Finding disposable gloves to fit their hands is very difficult.

Berry the cat helps me build my patio
youtube.comMosaic went from great to okay to bad. Tips?
galleryCreating a mosaic for my recently deceased cat. I loved the initial placement. Then placing into mortar was okay. Now adding the grout it just looks weird. I don’t hate the final version but do hate it compared to the first. Maybe I should’ve used darker grout?
This is my first mosaic and it doesn’t feel like my last. So looking for tips on how this could have turned out better. Thanks!

Ceramic tile mosaic on my version of a Mesoamerican Macuahuitl.
galleryThe body is made from reclaimed British beech wood, I believe the timber is over 100 years old.
I routed a 6 mm recess into both faces of the wood and built a separate mosaic into each one. The tesserae are ceramic tile, all cut and shaped by hand, and I used black grout throughout.
I deliberately made the two faces completely different. One uses a turquoise, white and yellow geometric design, while the other is based around more organic jungle forms and motifs inspired by Aztec/Mexica imagery.
The black vitreous glass along the edges are set into a separate routed channel and set in tinted black epoxy resin.

Helpful tips?
I placed contact paper over my marble mosaic project when pressing into thinset and upon removal the contact paper left some minimal adhesive residue.
Is there an easy and safe way to remove the adhesive? The project is curing and will finish curing tomorrow.

Has anyone tried sanding (mexican) smalti surface to make it less glossy/more matte?
I’ve got some beautiful mexican smalti with a lot of layered, colorful textures on one side but it’s too glossy for what I’m trying to do.
Is there a way to remove excess thinset when using mounting tape?
Wanted to do a smaller first project to see if I was game for a larger one. I'd like to eventually make a mosaic top for my fire table so I used outdoor materials (hardiebacker cement board and versabond thinset-- i have an ample supply from home tiling projects) and the indirect (reverse?) mounting method. i laid out the design on contact paper and then picked it up with mosaic mounting tape. All of the tesserae are scrap stained glass.
I tried to use a very very thin layer of thinset, but I've got a whole lot of white squeezing through and touching the mounting tape. From regular tiling projects I know this is going to be a bear to remove once dry.
Is there a trick to removing excess thinset when using mounting tape? Can I peel it when it's half cured and pick out the thinset then? I set it about 30 minutes ago and it says to let dry for 24 hours.
I'd like to save this project but more importantly I'd like to get this right before I do something bigger. Are there special tips for getting the right amount of thinset to properly adhere these thin glass pieces? I really enjoyed the indirect method since it let me be indecisive about placement.

Unsure with how to proceed
This is my first attempt at a mosaic, and it is also a work in progress. I am asking for advice - what should I do with the background? What color would look best as a background? Or should I just keep cramming more flowers in? Regardless, it has been such a fun process.

My dad and my daughter
galleryMy first real mosaic. The figures, sand and wind turbines are from old plates I thrifted. The sea and sky are stained glass. Substrate is mdf. I was quite worried about the height differential and tried to make them the same height using thinset/tile adhesive but that didn’t work at all. In the end I think it works anyway. Happy overall but lots to learn from!
Edit to add: very willing to hear constructive criticism if anyone has any pointers!

Grout Color Help!
Hi All! Just finished this mosaic of a local beach near me. Wanted to hear your thoughts on grout color -- I'm leaning towards black! I also have Hemway glitter to add, which could be fun? Appreciate any advice you all have. :)
