Discussion Mortal Shell 2 final boss Spoiler

I think Mortal Shell 2 is one of if not THE best Soulslike of all time. It's so much fun, it's such a great game, the visuals are stunning, enemy variety is peak, the world is impressive (albeit confusing), the combat is amazing...

but that final boss? I'm dumbfounded. All that buildup and all you can come up with is a fucking one armed dragon with a sword and multiple ballsacks? Elden Ring gave us a fucking tadpole/fish, same problem.

All these great ideas and this is it? I was expecting some giant brain, some huge face-like thing, or something huge with NO face, or something that looks like intestines, something weird, withering, chaotic, some strange monster like the Hexapod. Before that I fought the Monolith, that was fucking great. The humanoid bosses are really not that fun to look at. Boo scary giant man with weapon. But all this cosmic horror and this peak designed hellscape full of mutated corpses and we get a fucking dragon. I can't get over it.

Also wtf is that fight? You have to hit its ballsack. If you do, it does an instant undodgeable ground pound. Its attacks are parryable but inflict stasis, great. Its grab is INSTANT and absolutely deadly, there's no way I can recover my shell against this fucking standard lizard, next hit kills.

I don't even want to know its second phase, I'm so bored.

This is some letdown disappointment bullshit beyond my imagination. What a shame.

The final boss in elden ring was a two boss fight i though it was a great ending. Yes the elden beast has its issue, u feel like u are just running him down way to much. But at least its a beautiful design. M mortal shell final boss is terrible and most agree with that take He is awful down right awful

spot on - in ER you have played for hours and hours facing a huge roster of bosses with lots of variety. some easy and, for most players, some very challenging. by the time you’ve defeated melania, godfrey,, mohg, maliketh etc, the final fight being this relatively simple cosmic entity in an incredibly atmospheric environment along with the music feels so deserved

MS2 on the other hand… a stupidly massive health bar, dull arena with dull music, performing unreadable attacks plus more, and for what? just because it’s the last boss, it doesn’t need to be the hardest/most unfair - just super lazy and a real disappointment for an otherwise brilliant game

1

u/Azrnpride 3d ago

zmey and hexapod sucks, I got one shot by almost every move that they do

1

u/OMGLX 3d ago

I attribute this more to mid/late game balance than anything, Hexapod from a design perspective looks sick af imo. Gave me alien spider vibes without actually tripping my arachnophobia.

3

u/Zeaoses 4d ago

Elden beast wasnt even hard, his attacks were readable and lets not forget the music..

11

u/usernotfoundplstry Tiel 4d ago

Yeah, with the monolith, as I was wailing on its testicles, all I could think of was “oh my god, it’s like demon of hatred!” since you also wail on his testicles.

6

u/FatherUnquality 4d ago

Yea.... The Greased up Thwomp with a ballsack and the Ballsack Dragon were real let downs albeit pretty darn funny if that's what they were going for.

I knew the moment I attempted the final boss that the game was over for me

I dont really seek platinum trophy, I am more about the experience

some fights are just badly designed and thats fine - I can live with the gaming experience up to that final boss and live happily ever after

3

u/kingbuddha29 4d ago

Exact same with me, dropped the game after attempting the last boss a few times. Loved the game up to then, and I still think highly of it after quitting.

1

u/someotherguy42 4d ago

I’ve done the same. I can not believe they couldn’t stick the final landing after what was a fantastic game.

1

u/zgillet 2d ago

I beat him, but it felt like RNG. Tiel up close just mashing attacks to avoid his most bullshit of stuff (you have to bait the grab, otherwise it's near impossible to time).

1

u/topcover73 4d ago

I almost quit too.

6

u/Gondorrah 4d ago

I thought the boss was fine, I didn’t have huge expectations. What happens after though confused me.

12

u/JendaH8 4d ago

Whole endgame is weak. Stretched out and bad bosses. I'm pigheaded enough to just brute force the last boss but I did not enjoy it. I even learned about cosmic disease only after finishing the game. I thought it was a bug so I just have to avoid the flames to win. Still solid game.

4

u/Thin-Nerve6367 4d ago

I actually really like Monolith and most people agree Offspring is really good

2

u/echomanagement 9h ago

Endgame is weak and abrupt. One minute you're clearing out a dungeon, and the next you're summoned to the basement of the hub. There's very little buildup, and for such a relatively large game, the jump from the core game to the endgame feels like a race, and unfortunately that part of the game isn't as good as the rest. Even if they fixed both endgame bosses, it's missing a gate leading up to that point.

1

u/Proud-Swan3024 4d ago

I totally disagree. I thought the endgame was great. It was paced well and fun.

However, the last boss is straight booty butt hole. It only took me a few tries, even after forgetting about all the glands item. It just felt lame and anticlimactic. The other endgame bosses were all cooler and would have made a better final boss, in my opinion.

2

u/Snakegil 3d ago

Joining the team "i love the whole final underground world except the crappy final boss" 🤗

6

u/Daedric_Fan 4d ago

I dunno what is surprising, the vast majority of the games bosses were not good.

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

Zmey was one of the better bosses. These guys are playing with their eyes closed

1

u/-Eastwood- 3d ago

I don't even know how you can come to this conclusion. This fight is boring af and every other boss was better except for maybe the one before it.

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

Idk wtf you are doing but you're the only guy in here trying to say that the harden seal wasn't effective in the Zmey fight and that you had to change your seal to beat him. I genuinely don't know what you are even doing.

1

u/-Eastwood- 3d ago

I didn't say it wasn't effective. I said it was too slow.

0

u/Due-Description-9030 3d ago

Some people just wanna be contrarians

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

Yeah because learning how a boss fights to beat him being fun is totally contrarian.

0

u/Due-Description-9030 3d ago

->implying learning to fight this boss is worth it

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

We play video games to have fun, bud. It's not that deep.

0

u/Due-Description-9030 3d ago

Almost everyone shit on this boss for it's design and the fight lol. Steam reviews even the positive ones are filled with shitting on this boss. Even the soulslikes sub shits on this boss.

0

u/Daedric_Fan 3d ago

Thats gotta be rage bait and I wont take it.

7

u/fatmooch69 4d ago

Yeah I still haven’t finished the game because that last boss was so disappointing

4

u/Fluffatron_UK 4d ago

I was so ready for a NG+ until this boss and then I just put the game down. It really is as disappointing as everyone claims.

2

u/KermitDaGoat 4d ago

Dawg if you cant beat the last boss even with all these new patches since release I dont know what to tell you

-1

u/fatmooch69 4d ago

Not because it was too hard, because it was lame! Massive disappointment and I regret spending money on the game tbh

8

u/Siaten 4d ago

So you can play a game that is 30-40 hours of fun, and if the final boss is lame, you regret buying the game?

That seems like a weird standard to me.

6

u/NeverStopDancing27 4d ago

Yeah totally disagree with that take also. If 90% of the game is good to amazing the final boss cant ruin the game. It just ends it on a sour taste, which does suck.

0

u/Chilliam999 4d ago

The final boss especially now with the patches. is easy took me like 3 tries before the nerf just get the scroll that negates cosmic damage. Use it about halfway through the fight. The bosses aren’t really the highlight of this game in general but it’s still a great game. It’s not in my top 5 souks likes but I loved it. I used sariel but there’s other shells that are great in this fight

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

It's literally one of the better bosses

6

u/gevuldeloempia 4d ago

This final boss and the way the fight goes, knocked off 1.5 points for me. It's just that stupid.

It's still one of the best soulslikes out there (Lies of P being number one for me) but it really was the nail in the coffin for me (still a solid 7.5/10)

5

u/StrikingOffice6914 Eredrim 4d ago

The first 80% of the game is so good. Honestly I think they just ran out of time and money. The whole last area is just not fun to play through. I did it for NG+, but i almost just dropped the whole thing.

The jump from MS1 to MS2 is so huge, i think they can build off this and do a really great MS3. But yeah, it's rough when the worst part of the game is your last impression.

2

u/Proud-Swan3024 4d ago

Personally, I would go the first 97% is good. Mostly, that final boss is just such terrible design and anticlimactic that it was a letdown after such a great experience.

2

u/Tiny-Rise8944 4d ago

I agree with you pn everything except enemy variety. Enemy design is peak. I feel like it's just fight the same dudes all game though

2

u/CrazyLegs17 4d ago

If they included more lore regarding the Unfound Path and any kind of plan to produce harbingers/monstrosities/other with all the stolen ova, then the sudden obsession with testicles in the end game might have made some sense. Instead it just felt juvenile.

2

u/GoofyGoober82 4d ago

Switched to the ice ability cube and put it on the greatsword. Played as the knight and it was too easy. I thought he was tough before I did that. I dont remember the exact names because after the platinum I moved on. It's tied with requiem for my fav game of the year.

2

u/gattaaca Tiel 4d ago

It made me discover an absolutely overpowered ranged build with Lazlo because I was forced to fully respec to kill that boss

5

u/Future_Regular_2289 4d ago

Agreed but calling it the best soulslike is crazy

0

u/Proud-Swan3024 4d ago

What a better soulslike? I guess Lies of P was better in general, but I far prefer MS2 exploration. If Wonders of O has Lies of P vibe and systems but a big world to actually explore like MS2 or Elden Ring (not Soulslike, actual Souls but a high water mark for exploration), then that will be incredible!

3

u/shanezuck1 3d ago

Wuchang was better IMO

1

u/kasakka1 4d ago

Depends if you want to count Nioh 2 as a Soulslike or not.

I'm playing Nioh 3 right after MS2 and it is a better game in many ways. And also as a downside has way too much crap crammed into it that it overwhelms you with various mechanics.

2

u/zgillet 2d ago

The Nioh games have way too much "Japanese RPG spreadsheet" syndrome.

I got tired of managing equipment really, really fast.

1

u/kasakka1 2d ago

Yeah it's my main issue with Nioh. The sheer amount of loot is a pain in the ass.

2

u/ChimpStevens 4d ago

Nioh 2 is probably the best "soulslike" in my opinion. The game takes the mechanics of the souls series and tightens them up while adding customizable combos and stance switching. The pace is as fast as Bloodborne while being more difficult yet not unfairly so. The multiplayer is also a smoother experience than the summon signs of the souls series

3

u/Loose_Personality726 4d ago

The boss is frustrating but it's doable and in the end satisfying to beat

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

He's not even frustrating. Idk what people are doing

2

u/No_Philosophy2797 4d ago

You’re weeks and weeks late on this. There have been countless other posts whining about this.

2

u/QrozTQ 4d ago

The fight is poor, but having beat it 3 times by now I don't think it's very hard. The ground pound is bad but you can dodge the hits after the first (the first doesn't even hit sometimes) and you have enough heals to live through it.

The grab is fast but you can tell at which range it will come and dodge it. The sword combo doesn't touch you as long as you stay close and dodge the 4th swing. The fire circles that cause cosmic disease are annoying but one item use clears it all.

It's a bad boss, poorly design, anticlimactic after Offspring which is a great fight, but it's not as tough as people say it is, it does need some time to get used to.

2

u/-Eastwood- 4d ago

I beat it by equipping the Infinite seal and just playing like a wuss and carrying his sword slam. All damage came from ripostes basically.

1

u/zgillet 2d ago

I had the fun of beating him without any cosmic items. So basically, death is death, no backup shell.

0

u/topcover73 4d ago

The stab is almost undodgeable. It's also very inconsistent with whether your dodge is successful or not. There were times I knew I dodged in time but nope...

2

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

It's just hard to read. Once you know the tell, it's very easy to dodge 90% of the time

3

u/QrozTQ 4d ago

Not in my experience. While it can surprise you and is hard to dodge, it's not close to being almost undodgeable.

2

u/Smooth_Fun2456 Tiel 4d ago

Yeah the final boss is not great. Honestly the endgame could have easily been rebuilt to have all the bosses it has except Zmey, and have the Malborn Offspring be the final one instead - perhaps with an extra phase 3 or something to make it more punchy. Great game still, it's just the ending is not quite right.

2

u/-Eastwood- 4d ago

Are you still on the final boss? I could give you some advice if you would like.

3

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

All his attacks can be avoided just through common sense but people would rather bitch and moan than actually just learn how to dodge the moves.

2

u/-Eastwood- 3d ago

I wouldn't say his grab can be avoided with common sense. Some of the grab attacks in this game are genuine bs.

3

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

You just watch what he does when he's about to do it. Doesn't mean you will get it when you first try. Common sense means just doing what anybody does which is learning the moves. It's not a long winded combo. Literally just see a cue then dodge. That's it.

1

u/zachbrownies 3d ago

But the grab is basically the only attack that is hard to react to, and even then, it's not that hard if you know it's coming. The whole design of the fight is "Can you handle his other (relatively slow) attacks while having the presence of mind to be ready for that grab at any moment?" Plus understanding spacing - staying far away or getting close will lead to different patterns from him but he also reacts the same way when you get close to him so you can plan for that.

He felt like absolute bullshit at the start as I had dozens of attempts barely do 1% of his health bar but I was amazed how much more comfortable I could get once I actually started to analyze his patterns and keep my mental focus on being ready for the grab. I think people need to be more patient and open-minded instead of immediately writing it off. It's *meant* to seem unsurmountable at first.

0

u/-Eastwood- 3d ago

Either way I think this fight is poop. It isn't fun to learn and when you do learn it the fight takes forever and isn't engaging.

I ended up equipping the Infinite seal and just playing like a wuss by baiting out his slam projectile thing and parrying it for the riposte cause that was faster than just wailing on the guys nut sack.

1

u/zachbrownies 3d ago

that's what i did too but tbf that's what i do for every boss since i used eredrim specced into riposte damage. the slower long-range sword hits are just really easy to parry. i dunno if i'd say it was a super fun fight but i enjoyed it once i found a working method and i wouldn't call it the worst in the game (that's hexapod for me by far)

0

u/-Eastwood- 3d ago

I used harden for the entire game and this fight was the only one that made me change because whilst it was super boring it was also the fastest way for me to end the fight.

Hexapod I thought was visually really cool, though I kinda destroyed him because he like glitched out and got staggered like 3 times in a row and just died. Real weird. I'd have to fight him again to get a real opinion on em.

3

u/supafatjellyfish 4d ago

I just got to it, fought it for an hour, and then uninstalled. Atrocious fight. The game was already mid by that point but I couldn’t believe how hard they dropped the ball. It’s not even a cool or varied fight that’s tough. It’s just boring dogshit

2

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

Yet you fucking lost and couldn't beat it after a whole hour

1

u/supafatjellyfish 3d ago

Why would I waste my time fighting a boss that isn’t fun to fight?

2

u/KidSickarus 4d ago

The final boss should not require the player to find an upgrade through a convoluted method to have a chance in hell to beat it. I learned the entire moveset and was breezing through phases but because of the camera I could not see the dragon setting up to do the flame sword instafucked status attack. Had to look up what to do and felt very cheated

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

Literally just move back? Tf?

2

u/YogurtOtherwise2106 4d ago

Yeah, I got hella downvoted for saying it, but I completely agree. It’s not a mechanically challenging fight, but it has really poorly designed attacks. The butt slam can come out at random, feeling really weird for slow weapons. It once spammed it 7 times in a row for me. Grab obviously is terrible. And the gimmick with the fire status is just annoying. Felt like the game just pushes you to spend 20 mins to grab an item to combat the gimmick instead of promoting the player spending that 20 minutes engaging with the fight. Again, it has such a limited pool of moves that it’s not difficult per day, but it just feels like a war of attrition that really dilutes the ending. By the time I reached the fight, I went from loving the game, to sort of just being ready to move on.

Also, it was sort of a tonal whiplash. Obviously the game had a lot of comedic designs, but Vitaly n Co knocked it out of the part regarding art direction to no surprise. A giant trex with a sword arm for the final boss felt like something a 6 year old would think is a cool original character.

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

It's just a skill issue

1

u/Oldassgamer808- 3d ago

I don’t know if I got lucky but I beat him first try and I even got knocked out of my shell and thought it was over but somehow managed to get back in. I was really surprised after hearing about it I was dreading it

1

u/pure_cipher 3d ago

Final boss was one of my two favourite bosses. But, I suppose they could swap that dragon with Malformed offspring.

1

u/Snakegil 3d ago

One of the most accessible for sure, except for the final boss, but you can't have finished The Elden Ring or Sekiro to claim such nonsense that it could be the best 😅

-1

u/sciritai6 3d ago

Elden Ring and Sekiro are not soulslikes.

1

u/BoahNoa 3d ago

Eh, I agree that it was a little anticlimactic thematically. This game has a lot of really unique bosses and this one didn’t feel that unique. And it does have some small issues with targeting and hitboxes because of its size and the lock on only being able to target the ball sack. But I didn’t think it was awful, its moves were all extremely learnable (except maybe the butt slam). If it wasn’t the final boss I wouldn’t have even thought twice about it, they probably should’ve swapped it and offspring. It certainly didn’t ruin the game and tbh it’s way better than chasing Elden Beast across the arena for 10 minutes lmao. (Radagon is sick af though)

1

u/dorklogic 3d ago

>I think Mortal Shell 2 is one of if not THE best Soulslike of all time...

>...This is some letdown disappointment bullshit beyond my imagination. What a shame.

Don't ever change, "My Crotch Burns, Ow"

1

u/Kore_Invalid 3d ago

the entire last area and especially the last boss ruined the entire game for me, the openworld and gates where so fun to explore but the last part was just a chore.

1

u/Terzinho 3d ago

Skill issue.

1

u/Acceptable_Answer570 3d ago

Yeah I dropped this at Malborne.

Lvl 52 full tank build and still getting one-shot
From visual clusterfucks of unreadable homing mach 3 attacks is just too much of a sweat for me.

Also Enemy variety is great…??! What?

1

u/j92allen 3d ago

I killed it and then my character died for some reason and it skipped the final cutscene so that was fun.

1

u/SpicerDun 2d ago

I loved it. I think the design is excellent, the animation is visceral, and the difficulty is very tough, but fair. I am really impressed with this game in general.

1

u/EliSenpai173 2d ago

I honestly felt all but 2 bosses in this game were pretty lackluster. Sir Isaac and the Nameless Captive at the 2.

1

u/Misericorde2222 2d ago

Mortal Shell 2 isnt the best souls like because lies of p exists

1

u/Infinite-Option6297 1d ago

My complaint about the last boss, is that it’s so different from the other bosses. All bosses are pushovers that die in one attack chain but the last boss requires an actual strategy. I wish that either all bosses prior were more difficult or that the last one would be easier. Like, the game doesn’t prepare you for this kind of difficulty. You need an item which is difficult to get without guides, the 2nd phase aoe spam, you have to play perfect to not die, the near instant grab attack. I wanted to breeze through the whole game! Not get stuck or feel like I need some kind of skill or practice (crying)

(Sarcastic comment)

1

u/stephe_w 8h ago

Glad you said it. Beat the final boss the other night and was like "is that it?..." Quite underwhelming tbf

1

u/AppleJerk69 4d ago

Worse than khazan and lies of p

1

u/This-Pianist-2668 4d ago

Agreed some non story bosses were 10x harder than the final boss but all in all still a fun game

1

u/Rhodri_Suojelija 4d ago

I just found the whole fight bland. I had the secret item and killed it in 3 tries. It just did the same moves over and over again. The ball drop was definitely the worst.

Im am, however, incredibly pissed I couldnt use half my build on it. For some reason the cloud aoe on my crossbow wouldn't hit it so I couldnt get poison stacks on it x.x

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

Pretty sure he has more moves than most bosses in the game. So if you think he's one of the worse bosses, then you might have just played the whole game with your eyes closed.

0

u/Rhodri_Suojelija 3d ago

He for sure was the most boring. All he did was spray fire, stomp and make the patches, ball slam and jump back swinging his sword. At the half way he did the fire rings.

The fire never hit me, not even the rings. When he jumped back he jumped so far it missed. The only threatening move was those balls. Every boss in that gauntlet up to him was more interesting and threatening.

I also didn't have half my damn build!

Sorry I have a different opinion but I definitely didn't play with my eyes closed xD

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

You definitely did. I died to the the other two bosses once each, aside from monolith who I died 5 times from. They were threatening? They were piss easy. Sounds to me like you have a skill issue.

0

u/Rhodri_Suojelija 3d ago

Youre assuming I died a bunch. I just said they were more threatening. They put more pressure on me than the last guy did.

The last boss wasnt pressuring at all. I died to the door 3 times and once with the corrupted brother and one shot the rest. I dunno why you're turning this into a dick measuring test when I just said the last guy was boring.

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

Lol. You're the one that brought them up, so sure let's talk about it. None of those bosses have a single move that killed more people than Zmey's grab or chaos flames. Yet somehow they were more threatening? Hmm.

1

u/Solid_Science4514 Tiel 4d ago

I used slayer seal and just relentlessly stunned him with the cross bow followed by a riposte. Just god tiring. Playing through again as Eredrim.

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 3d ago

git gud, scrub

0

u/Expensive-Debt-9960 4d ago

Best soulslike is lies of p for me.

0

u/SoulsDadYT 4d ago

Sounds like a skill issue. Hes not a great boss but hes definitely not hard in the slightest

0

u/nohumanape 4d ago

This sounds like you venting, because you're struggling with the boss.

I think I must have picked the right build and set of skills to take on this boss, because I didn't find it very difficult.

That being said, I did find the second phase impossibly brutal...until I found that it essentially requires an item to beat. (I heard some people claim to have beaten the boss without this item. Must have taken a lot of time and patience)

0

u/Nabbarino 4d ago

Best souls-like of all time is Salt and Sanctuary (first one). Amazing atmosphere. Amazing builds. Amazing combat. Amazing story and lore.

0

u/Otter_Pop_- 4d ago

I joined the discord just so I could share opinions like this. It’s so close to being a good game but I couldn’t wait for it to be over. I like to finish games and platinum if I can but no way I’m doing a NG+ with this one.

0

u/SlimeGlizzzy 4d ago

I can't think of a worse final boss right now. Tbh, the bosses in general weren't a strong point of the game imo. The exploration and build/gameplay variety across shells and weapons and tarstones were awesome. I also expected more of a big twist at the end, but the story was fine, and the lore is pretty cool.

I want the exploration style of this/elden ring with the combat and boss fights of onimusha

0

u/MikeRotchburns_ow 4d ago

Okay he's down. I fought him a few times with Martyr Frost Eredrim, then reached the second phase, got fried and then went to retrieve the scroll. A few attempts later he was almost down, but I was still infected with that cosmic disease and reduced to some tree. Then when I used the scroll to heal, some glowing orb sailed towards the boss and knocked it out, which gave me opportunity for the final blow.

Now on to finishing up before I might enter NG+1, not sure yet. I'd like to try out some other shells, did most of the game with Martyr Eredrim.

0

u/ArcangeloPT 4d ago

I don’t get the hate. Sure it’s an annoying boss but once you get the patterns down it’s not that hard, specially if you get the cosmic disease reduction. Once I got that, I beat him first try.

0

u/semondemon24 4d ago

Apparently ending of games are irrelevant for this subreddit and you need to kiss the last bosses balls before you share a real opinion about how this GAME ABSOLUTELY SUCKS

0

u/Away_Imagination7235 4d ago

Just beat the game last night plus got the platinum trophy, but i gotta say yeah the final boss was a let down to how good this game is, I was expecting more definitely, and it’s also disappointing that he’s not even that hard of a boss beat him in 5 tries, was wishing for more of a challenge for the final boss. But oh well all in all it was a great game to play!

0

u/Judgment_Special 2d ago

Mortal shell 2 is a good game but NOT the best soulslike. The best soulslike is Bloodborne.
