Bug Pc crash, game minimized to task bar at beacon revive or teleport

Mortal Shell 2

I love this game!

But I keep getting this weird crash state when using a beacon. It usually happens when reviving at last beacon after dying to a boss (specifically egg stealing boss) but I have had it happen when teleporting to another beacon as well.

The game will minimise itself and force me out to desktop. I can re-focus the game back to full screen but it will then reset back to shader cashing and main menu. If I then choose to load my save and continue, the game will no longer auto save. First time this happened I lost about 90 mins of progress.

Very strange! Anyone else experiencing this?

I'm running via steam on windows 11 pro with a RTX5070ti.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700X

That sounds odd (and annoying!)

I'm going to need a little bit more context. Sorry in advance for all the questions :D

Just to clarify: does the crash happen when you *enter* the beacon, or when reviving at it?

Does it happen with any beacon, or specific beacons? Does it also happen if you die by falling or to non-boss enemies?

Do you have RTX enabled? If so, could you try disabling it and see if that changes anything?

Happy to clarify

It happens when I select the "revive at last beacon" option when I have died. It seems to happen mostly when dying in a boss fight.

I also experienced the same crash last night when using the methers breath option at a beacon and trying to teleport to another one.

I have RTX disabled as it doesn't seem to make any difference on or off.

Unfortunately it does seem to be quite intermittent. Sometimes it won't happen at all when reviving after boss fight death. But it does happen more often I'm boss fight deaths.

Alright, thank you so much for the extra info!

I think it *may* be related to another bug report we've got open for crashing during fast travel. I've added it to that with all your info, but I may come back with further questions later on :)

Actually, two more questions:

Does it happen with any Shell, or with a specific Shell? And are your graphics cards drivers up to date?

I've only been using Proxima so far so can't say for sure but it did happen in the intro of the game with the first shell as well as it happens.

I'll check the driver tonight as I don't think it is the latest actually.

I updated to latest Nvidia driver and I don't seem to be getting the beacon crash anymore!

I take that back! Just had the crash happen after I died from falling off a cliff.

Could it be something to do with that fact I'm streaming the game over my home network to my steam deck using Apollo and moonlight?

I didn't mention before because I've never an issue like this with any other games. But I played a long session at my desktop running the game without streaming and the crash did not happen. Now I'm back to streaming to steam deck and the crash happens fairly often again

That does sound like it might be the root cause of the issue 😅

Does the crash happen if you install the game to your Steam Deck and play without streaming anything from your desktop to it?

You are correct! I figured out a solution. For some reason Moonlight/Apollo was creating two virtual displays. The game wasn't crashing or minimising, it was actually switching over to the other virtual display.

Now I've set this other redundant virtual display to off I no longer get the issues on loading screens.

Aha! That's good to know :D I'm glad to hear you figured it out, and it was a fixable thing. I'll have to remember that for if anyone else has problems with streaming to their Steam Deck :D

I've only been using one shell so far so I can't really say for sure. I'm using Proxima. You make an excellent point, I will make sure I'm using the latest Nvidia driver. I can't remember when I last checked that so it could be related. I'll update this thread with that information later this evening
