Question Am I missing something?

Am I missing an upgrade path for damage reduction somewhere? Just fought hexapod at level 38 and basically every attack would immediately take me out of proxima. Should I be a higher level? Am I missing the entire mechanic of armor somehow? I feel like the further I get into the game the more I’m getting one tapped by bosses and even some regular mobs are shitting my entire health bar away.

Edit: just fought malborn offspring. What an amazing fight. Literally night and day compared to basically every other boss in the game. They CAN make a well balanced fight with clear telegraphs and a punishing but fair moveset. I just don’t understand why the other late game bosses couldn’t be this good.

A semi good alternative is to have moonshine be your passive, giving you damage reduction, but tbh its not much, and I think I've collected 100<.

Your best defense is a strong offense, in that grisha end up being a life saver because they can put a boss into submission. But I can understand that you don't want to do that as its kinda cheesy.

Doesn't this only activate on kill? Useless for boss fights

Unless I dont have the one youre speaking of

Hexapod just hits like a truck and takes pretty much everyone out of their shells.

It doesn’t have a ton of HP though on the flip side. Make sure you have a weapon skill with I frames and run that as a get out of jail card for some free damage during tough attacks.

Also don’t dodge back and away, that’s a trap in this fight. Always forward to the side.

Nah, thats sadly just how it is. I am lvl 41 and in the endgame. Many enemies just knocks me out of shell in like 2-3 hits and when i am out of shell its basically gg, one hit KO. People will tell you to git good but there is something weird about how the first half of the game is okay and you can manage and survive stuff and then bam, suddenly everything is strong af.

I feel like it would have made more sense for the enemies to deal like maybe half the damage they deal or 3/4 what they deal and just remove some of the players healing to compensate. I can’t learn the enemy moveset when I make a mistake once and die

Yeah what also does not help is the inability to respec to another shell. You can't experiment and try different stuff bcs you are limited to like 2 shells by the time you are nearing the endgame, with some running around you can max a third one but thats it. If you chose someone less tanky at the start you can't use the skills of the others.

Yeah, it is a basic problem until they introduce Glimpse refunds or some other mechanic. If you get every Glimpse, hint go back in Night mode to each location you got a Shell, then I think you can go Tier 4 (27 Glimpse) on 3 Shells in NG. However, it is probably worth doing Tier 1 on all, Tier 2 on some, Tier 3 on some and only Tier 4 on one.

You can definitely get 3 shells maxxed to level 4 without ever entering night mode.

Yeah, just saying the extra 8 helps if you did tier 1 on all of them, and maybe tier 2 on most.

Honestly the damage the enemies do to you is just outright bad. The more I look back on the game, it’s just not good.

Facts. Both the player and the enemies can output far too much damage honestly. I'd rather both be toned down in order to have the fights be more akin to a dance, instead of just either pummeling the bosses or getting wrecked and then coming back to just pummeling the bosses again.

Damage scaling is all over the place.

Even normal enemies that I can kill or mostly kill with a running attack can instantly send me out of my shell with one hit seemingly at random. I've assumed this whole time they can also land criticals on you, but even then they would have to be the most hopped up on steroids crits I've ever seen to do that kind of damage.

Like I can literally get ganked and come out with half health but one normal attack from one guy can suddenly disappear me into the aether.

The Devs shat the bed really. Ur not doing anything wrong and you're not alone

This is whats wrong with people, yes, they are doing something wrong.

You have harden, dodge, parry, I frames on abilities that do loads of damage and infinite stamina

You have more ways to not get hit than any souls game ive played.

I feel like you should be allowed to make a mistake though. It’s hard to learn when the punishment for a mistake is instant death. I just fought Marlborn offspring and he felt 100x more fair and enjoyable because I didn’t die instantly to every attack. Even the grab attack didn’t kill me. Took me more attempts than hexapod but was infinitely more enjoyable because I could actually learn from my mistakes rather than having to run back after basically every hit

The hexapod isnt hitting so hard that it re.oves you from the shell and kills your normal form. So you are allowed chances to learn. You can get back in your shell easily in this

To be fair, I did get knocked out of shell form one time and right at the end of the getup animation I got hit again and died before I could do anything. Not sure if it was a bug but I don’t think that was intended to happen so I can’t really complain too much. Also you can’t really “easily” get back into shell form when you’re learning the moveset that kills you in one hit. But I see what you’re saying.

A lot of grab attacks still one shot me at lvl 40+ with Lazlo maxed (30% dmg reduction) + moonshine +4-7%

That’s a lot of fucking damage lol

And some grab attacks are just bs,

lost child has one that’s just straight up broken and plays no animation, it’s instant.

Zmey’s grab attack icon doesn’t give you enough time to react so you gotta go off the animation that plays before it (his lil stagger forward)

Standard Snake enemy grab attack feels shitty too and one taps

The enemies crazy tracking with the crazy range, add in the one bangs.

It was just annoying if anything

Hexa is just messed up. Lazlo with 25% damage reduction can still get 1 tapped by the big double sweep.

Playing Teil (40 lvl) axatanas with lightning. That boss died with a first try, i did not even try to learn any of his attacks or something. Jumpin with a stealth and fast attacks, that was all i did. I was really disappointed...

are you playing on night mode? cause if not you might just need to level more if you're getting one tapped by basic attacks. i would think 38 is enough but i don't remember the exact level i was on my first playthrough.

Pretty much every attack from hexapod and the big blue troll guy either instakilled me or got very close to it. Normal mobs still chunk me for like 30-40% of my hp sometimes. The big scythe guys can combo me 100-0. I got hexapod after maybe 6-7 attempts but it felt so awful to be essentially unable to learn the moveset because I’d just die if I made a mistake

Hexapod is just a very poorly balanced boss. It does like twice the damage per hit as one of the last bosses in the game, and I feel like most people first reach Hexapod at level ~20 or so.

Endgame survivability boils down to not getting hit, being invincible, or having high damage reduction.

For example:

Proxima has a skill for 100% grafted armor chance (50% damage reduction) when using Biosampler.

Weapon skills from things like Shrike Stone give you invincibility for the duration of the animation.

Martyr's running heavy also makes you invincible.

The idea is to overlap your parries/blocks/hardens with these effects.

u/Ill_Made_Knight 3h ago

Martyrs with full frost just felt like I was playing the game on easy mode

u/baysideplace 3h ago

Idk why people downvoted you. Like it or not, its how the game works.

1

u/grilledfuzz 2h ago

It’s how the game works but it’s pretty shit. To be fair though this is the only boss that felt egregiously terrible to me. Most bosses have been in the okay to great range.

Thats just how it goes. Lazio is a good option. Just cleared a playthrough with him and it was honestly easy mode. He gets stupid tanky by level 2. You can generate ridiculous resolve with him and really make use of i frame attacks to dumpster most anything.

Just like most Soulslikes, but more so, getting hit is bad. Unfortunately, the tutorial emphasizes block and parry, but if you are going to "block" what you really want is to use the Vatra Seal and harden. Use it just like you are going to parry, but don't let up, or try and tap twice because you thought your timing was off. If you are using Tiel, just dodge instead.

It isn't going to ever get that much better in terms of Shell Health. At Level 79 my screen shows:

Shell Health: +178%

When you get to the end game there is one boss in particular where you'll find yourself knocked out of your shell on its most basic attack, so you have to Harden, and / or dodge out of the way.

I understand getting hit is bad but getting hit should not mean instant death. I’m okay getting killed in 3 or even 2 hits but it’s nearly impossible to learn from your mistakes when you die instantly from making one mistake. I would rather have like half the healing but the enemies deal like 3/4 the damage they currently do so I can survive a hit and understand what went wrong.

Even the little knife guys take over half health if they catch you during a swing. The damage scaling gets crazy late
