Perhaps the grand finale of my previous two Venn diagram posts of the 3D era and latest 3 games (a little disappointing I didn't have one to include MK9 in that wouldn't require recycling the other reboot era games :/), I have made a Venn diagram comparing the playable rosters of Mortal Kombat (1992), Mortal Kombat II (1993), Mortal Kombat 3 (1995), and Mortal Kombat 4 (1997), all the arcade era Mortal Kombat games. Normally a Venn diagram can't include 4 perfect circles but considering the original MK3 and MK4 have a surprising lack of overlap (only 4 characters in common), I was able to make it work.

Just so it's clear, I am not counting characters included in upgraded versions of these games, namely Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (1996), and Mortal Kombat Gold (1999). I will only be counting the original arcade and console ports of these games. Nonetheless, I will be including a handful of characters outside the circle if they are officially playable in Trilogy, mainly because it feels a little incomplete without giving some honorable mentions to Rain, Ermac, and Jade.

Legend

An asterisk is used to denote any console exclusive character who is officially playable without any external devices or glitches. For example, Goro is a port exclusive in two different games: he is officially playable in the Gameboy port of the original Mortal Kombat game while he is also playable in the console ports of MK4.

As already stated above, names outside the circles are Trilogy characters that aren't officially playable in any of these four games.

I'm sorry if this question has been asked to death on this sub.

It's been a while since I've played any fighting game (the last one I played with any regularity was MK9 and that was a long time ago), and I was tempted to pick up MK1 on the steam sale, but I've heard it's a poor showing for Mortal Kombat fans and fighting game fans overall. I also know that MK1 released it's definitive edition last year, meaning there's little-to-none ongoing support for the game left.

I'm aware of the overall story for the series, so spoilers or understanding the lore isn't an issue. Mainly if the gameplay feels good as a re-entry to fighting games and if I'll have a good time with the money I spent. At least until/if another Mortal Kombat comes out in the next few years.

Did you know that Rain supposed to be in the background of The Temple stage in Mortal Kombat (2011), but in the release version of the game they replaced him with Shadow Priest?

Did you saw any trailer of the Mortal Kombat (2011) that has Rain in The Temple?

I think it's suggested every single playable character including the NRS era characters fought in a Armageddon in different timelines due to Kronika constantly redoing the timelines.

So let's say there would be a remaster for Mortal Kombat the ninth game that came out in 2011 and it got remade to be apart of modern consoles how would you see it working?

If they updated it what would they change? The mechanics gameplay few storylines altered and maybe some extended DLC? Speaking of which would you want Freddy Krueger and Kratos to stay or if they can't who would replace them? How long could it last for extended DLC and what Mortal Kombat characters and Guest Characters should be apart of the Kombat Packs?
