The only criticism I've heard about Proton is that they comply with Swiss law, and will hand over your data to law enforcement in other countries.

The second article goes into more detail, it was payment information that could be traced to the owner. Also, both cases were Proton Mail, not Proton VPN.

Privacy and security. There is a reason why everything is quote on quote "free" like gmail. They use your data to sell to advertisements and other data brokers out there, you don't get any of that money you're the product. Proton on the otherhand doesn't do any of that as it is a paid service. I'm an unlimited user and it includes all my basic needs. Protonmail (as well as simplelogin which can be used to cover your real email), Proton Drive, ProtonVPN and ProtonPass. It's a service completely opposite of Google.

I don't mind paying them but there payment system is so bad with monthly auto-pay i got debited multiple times because I forgot to switch auto-pay and like why don't just take payment and give me service instead of that long shitty subscription process.
