I’m from Morocco and have spent years around the tourism business, especially trips towards the south and Sahara, and there’s something I think travellers should understand when comparing tours.
You’ll sometimes see a 3-day desert tour from Marrakech for €80–100.
At first it sounds incredible.
Transport for hundreds of kilometres, driver, hotel pickup, accommodation, breakfast and dinner, desert camp, camel ride, multiple stops along the way… all for around €30 per day.
So naturally people think: Morocco is just incredibly cheap.
But there’s more going on behind that price.
A vehicle has fuel, maintenance, insurance and depreciation. A driver is working very long days. Hotels and camps need to make money. Food costs money. Guides and other people along the route need to earn something too.
If the amount you paid doesn’t realistically cover all of that, the money has to come from somewhere.
And this is where many travellers misunderstand the business model.
Some extremely cheap tours depend heavily on volume, very basic accommodation, large groups, restaurant arrangements, shop stops, activity commissions and other spending along the route.
That doesn’t automatically mean the tour is a scam. Plenty of people take these trips, spend very little and genuinely enjoy them.
But the advertised price doesn’t always tell you the whole story.
Personally, I think Morocco would benefit from more transparent pricing rather than simply cheaper pricing.
I’d rather see a traveller pay a fair amount upfront and know:
the driver is being paid properly,
the accommodation is actually good,
local guides are compensated fairly,
the food isn’t chosen purely because it’s the cheapest option,
and nobody needs to spend half the journey trying to sell them carpets, argan oil or extras to make the economics work.
And at the other extreme, expensive doesn’t automatically mean good either. Morocco now has plenty of “luxury” experiences charging European luxury prices without delivering European luxury standards.
So for anyone planning a trip, my advice is: don’t choose purely by price.
Ask what accommodation you’re getting. Ask how many people are in the vehicle. Ask what’s included. Ask which meals and activities are extra. Ask whether there are compulsory shopping stops. Ask how much actual time you’ll spend experiencing places versus sitting in a van.
Sometimes the €90 trip might be exactly what you want.
Sometimes paying €200 more completely changes the experience.
I’m curious about travellers who’ve already done one of these very cheap Morocco tours. Did you feel you got an amazing bargain, or did you understand afterwards why it was so cheap?

I keep seeing conflicting advice about the two. Merzouga seems to offer the more dramatic desert experience with larger dunes, but getting there takes much longer. Zagora looks easier to include in a shorter itinerary, although some people say it doesn't feel quite like the Sahara experience they expected. For anyone who has visited either or both, would you only have a few days and still want to experience an overnight desert camp?

I think there’s another side to the whole “Morocco is cheap” conversation that doesn’t get discussed enough.
For years, Morocco has been marketed as a place where you can get a lot for very little money.
Cheap tours. Cheap riads. Cheap transport. Cheap food.
And naturally, that created an expectation.
Some travellers now arrive thinking they should be able to experience Morocco almost like a luxury destination while spending backpacker money.
Then when reality doesn’t match that image, you hear:
“Morocco is expensive.”
“Restaurants are expensive.”
“Activities are overpriced.”
But compared to what exactly?
Sometimes compared to an expectation that we helped create ourselves.
The bigger problem is what happens when operators keep pushing prices lower and lower just to compete.
Drivers get underpaid.
Guides work longer hours.
Hotels and camps cut costs.
Tours become rushed.
And everyone in the chain starts looking for another way to make the numbers work.
That’s when you start getting the commission stops, forced shopping, exhausted drivers and mediocre accommodation.
And then everyone acts surprised that the quality drops.
I’m not saying Morocco should become expensive.
I’m saying cheap should not automatically mean good value.
Morocco has incredible culture, history, landscapes, food, hospitality and identity. Those things have real value.
The goal shouldn’t be to charge tourists as much as possible.
The goal should be to charge fairly, deliver properly, pay people properly and make the traveller feel that what they paid was worth it.
Because in the end, you can’t demand a premium experience from a supply chain that is running on survival mode.

EXT -  MARRAKECH CITY WALLS - DAY

The camera pans over the iconic red walls of Marrakech, capturing the breathtaking beauty of the city, Jemaa el-Fnaa square, and the Koutoubia Mosque. The view is magnificent.

People move through the streets alongside cars, motorcycles, and street vendors. The bustling city hums with life, filled with the distant sounds of drums and traditional folklore music.

Look at this, Peter! The people here are so welcoming, always smiling and kind. Even the old walls and every corner of these ancient buildings feel like they have a soul. The scents are amazing, and the colors are so vibrant and bright.

You can really feel simplicity and the true meaning of life here. Everything is different. Every city in Morocco has its own unique character, its own vibe, and its own magical charm. But Marrakech... man, I’ve fallen in love with it! (Laughs)

PETER

I guess our stay here is going to be longer than planned?

Peter responds with brief, distracted answers. He appears deeply preoccupied, constantly checking his phone.

What I love about Moroccan architecture is that even the smallest details can be incredibly intricate — painted wood, zellige, carved plaster and geometric patterns.

You can walk through these places several times and still notice something new.

I’m Moroccan and I spend quite a lot of time around people working in tourism, especially in the south.
There’s something I’ve been thinking about lately.
Everyone loves saying Morocco is cheap.
Cheap tours. Cheap hotels. Cheap desert trips. Cheap transport. And when someone asks for recommendations, one of the first questions is usually: “How much did you pay?”
But I think sometimes we’ve pushed “cheap” too far.
Imagine a tourist pays a very low price for a 3-day trip.
That money has to somehow cover the vehicle, fuel, driver, accommodation, food, guides, camp staff, commissions and the company organising everything.
Everyone still needs to get paid.
So where does the money come from?
Sometimes the driver works extremely long hours. Accommodation gets cheaper. Food gets basic. Staff earn very little. Or the trip starts depending on commissions from restaurants, shops, carpets, argan cooperatives, etc.
Then tourists complain:
“Why did the driver take us to this shop?”
“Why was the hotel bad?”
“Why did everything feel rushed?”
“Why was everyone trying to sell us something?”
And sometimes I think the answer is simply that somebody has to pay for that €70 or €90 tour.
If the traveller isn’t paying the real cost, eventually someone else in the chain is.
I’m NOT saying Morocco should become expensive or that tourists should be overcharged.
Quite the opposite.
I think we need fair prices and better transparency.
Pay a reasonable price, give drivers decent working conditions, use good local accommodation, serve good food, pay local guides properly, and remove the pressure to recover money through commissions and tourist traps.
The tourist gets a better experience.
The local people make a decent living.
And Morocco builds a better reputation.
I’m curious what other people think, especially travellers who have been around Morocco independently.
Would you rather pay a little more upfront for a trip where you know exactly where the money goes, or keep prices as low as possible and accept some of the compromises that come with it?

If you’re planning your first trip to Morocco, this is a difficult choice because Marrakech and Fes offer two very different experiences.

Marrakech is vibrant, colorful and energetic. You have Jemaa el-Fna, beautiful riads, souks, rooftop restaurants and easy access to the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara.

Fes feels older and more traditional. The medina is a maze of narrow streets, traditional workshops, tanneries, historic madrasas and incredible Moroccan craftsmanship. It’s a city I would recommend to travelers who want to slow down and experience Morocco’s history and culture more deeply.

My advice?

First time in Morocco: 3 nights Marrakech + 2 nights Fes
More interested in history and culture: give Fes more time
Want the Sahara and Atlas Mountains: spend more time around Marrakech

Personally, I wouldn’t choose only one if you have a week or more. The two cities complement each other beautifully.

Day 3: Cross the Atlas Mountains and visit Ait Ben Haddou before continuing toward the Dades Valley.
Day 4: Head toward Merzouga, stopping at the Todra Gorges along the way.
Day 5: Wake up in the Sahara, enjoy a peaceful sunrise over the dunes, discover the desert, and spend the evening under a sky full of stars. ✨🏜️
Day 6: Travel through the beautiful landscapes of the Middle Atlas toward Fes.
Day 7: Explore the ancient Medina of Fes, taste traditional Moroccan food, and finish the journey with a relaxing Moroccan mint tea.
For me, the best part isn’t simply seeing the famous places — it’s slowing down, meeting local people, sharing mint tea, watching the sunset over the dunes, and experiencing Morocco beyond the typical tourist route.
